http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,054  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times,, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 14,035.67 up 53.91 or 0.39% from Friday's close of 13,981.76. For the year the Dow is up 7.11%. Of the Dow components  22  gained and 8 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Chevron up 96 cents  and percentage-wise was Cisco  up 2.24%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM down 60 cents and percentage-wise was Alcoa down 2.58%.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks ride deal talks to Oct '07 levels" by Matt Jarzemsky says fresh corp deal news & an upbeat reading on German investor confidence emboldened US stock investors, sending major benchmarks to 5 year highs. United Health dropped 66 cents after a gov agency proposed reimbursing insurance firms for Medicare Advantage, a health care plan for seniors at a lower rte than some expected.

NYT pB9 "Talk of a retailer merger cheers markets"  & AJC pA9 "Merger talks boost indexes" by AP says talk of more deal making sent the stock market higher putting the Dow within reach of its all time high.

FT p22 "OfficeMax soars as talk of tie-up with rival retailer finds favour" by Anora Mahmudova says equity markets have eprformed well so far in '13 due to reduced headline & macro risks, better than expected corp earnings & early signs that economic growth is improving.

IBD pB4 "Indexes hit fresh peaks; more leaders break out" by Victor Reklaitis says stocks started off the holiday shortened week on a positve note, rallying into the close to end with decend gains as volume decreases.  The current outlook is still a confirmed uptrend.

As of the open of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Wednesday's opening trailing P/E ratio is 15.44 up from Tuesday's opening trailing P/E ratio of 15.38 (year ago it was 14.45); today's opening P/E estimate is 12.50 unchanged from Tuesday' s opening P/E estimate of 12.50 (year ago it was 12.35) and today's opening dividend yield is 2.50 down from Friday's opening dividend yield of 2.61 (last year it was 2.50). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,827.67 up 7.02    from Friday's closing numerator of 1,820.65. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the increase in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $60.92 up 33 cents from Friday's average of $60.69. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.18 (DIS/UNH)down  28   cents from Friday's median closing price of $56.46. The lowest volume was Travelersand the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $702 ($182,767-$182,065).
