http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,076  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 3/1/13 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 3/1/13.

A read of the print editions of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Boomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Monday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 14,127.82 up 38.16 or 0.27% from Friday's close of 14,089.66. For the year the Dowis up 7.81%.  Of the Dow components 19 gained and 11 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM up $2.12 and percentage-wise was Walmart up 2.12%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Caterpillar down $1.72 or 1.89%.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks dig out of a hole" by Chris Dieterich says the Dow edged closer to an all time high Mon as investors brushed off steep losses in China's equity markets.  Walmart rose $1.52 to be the biggest advancer on the Dow while Home Depot rose $1.26.  United Technologies fell $1.00 after it said its Pratt Whitney unit said it broke up an alleged fraudulent testing scheme at another unit.

NYSE pB3 "Despite news on China, Dow closes on a high" by AP, AJC pA6 "Dow pushed toward record" by AP  say invnestors brushed off anxiety about a China slowdown and pushed the Dow to its highest close this year.

Fin Times p24 "Northrop Grumman hit as budget fears take toll on defense sector" by Anora Mahmudova says US equity markets recovered from early losses & moved closer to multiyear highs.

IBD pB2 "Stocks reverse bullishly but volume again drops" by Vincent Mao says stocks mustered gains for a 2nd straight session Mon due to anotehr late reversal as the market is still in a orrection.

As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5  of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Tuesday's opening trailing P/E ratio is 15.58 up  from yesterday's  trailing P/E ratio of 15.48  (year ago it was 14.51); today's opening P/E estimate is 12.53 unchanged  from Monday' s  P/E estimate of 12.53   (year ago it was 12.45) and today's opening dividend yield is 2.49 down from yesterday's opening dividend yield of 2.51 (last year it was 2.51). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,839.67 up 4.97 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,834.70. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $61.32 up16 cents from Friday's average of $61.16. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.54 (DIS/UNH) up 14 cents from Friday's median closing price of $54.40. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $497 ($183,967- $183,470).

3/4//13 Monday 4:16 pm MarketWatch by Wallace Witkowski says US stocks turned around early session losses to close higher Monday, after strength in defensive sectors shored up weak indusrtials and energy on China growth fears. The Dow Jones Industrial Average /quotes/zigman/627449 DJIA +0.27% closed up 38.16 points, or 0.3%, to 14,127.82, about 37 points shy of its record high close from October 2007. The S&P 500 Index /quotes/zigman/3870025 SPX +0.46% rose 7 points, or 0.5%, to close at 1,525.20. The Nasdaq Composite Index /quotes/zigman/12633936 COMP +0.39% advanced 12.29 points, or 0.4%, to close at 3,182.03, even though shares of index heavyweight Apple Inc. /quotes/zigman/68270/quotes/nls/aapl AAPL -2.42% fell 2.4% to $420.05, after touching a new 52-week low of $419 during the session.
