5/10/13 Fri. am J.P. Morgan Flees Cal Power Market

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,175  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of Friday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 15,082.62 down 22.5 or 0.15% from Wednesday's close of 15,105.12. For the year the Dow is up 15.10%.  Of the Dow components  12  gained and  18 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was 3M up $1.72 or 1.5%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM down $1.58 and percentage-wise was JPMorgan down 1.45%.

WSJ pC4 "Dow, S&P turn red after rally" by Alexandra Scaggs says stocks closed lower as buyers took a breather after the latest string of record setting gains.

NYT pB7 "After 5 days of gains momentum dwindles" by Reuters says the stock market retreated from its nominal highs Thurs with the S& slipping after 5 days of gains.  IBM was the biggest drag on the Dow dropping $1.58.

FT p24 "Tesla's electric car drives up price as S&P resurgence hits the brakes" by Arash Massoudi says US stocks declined despite a jump in Tesla Motors.  Microsoft shares fell amid concern about its latest op system.  It fell 1%.

IBD pB2 "Stocks keep losses small but IBD 50 tacks on gain" by Paul Whitfield says stocks retreated in mixed vol Thur as the current outlook is still a confirmed uptrend.

As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.55 up from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.52 (last year it was 14.17); today's P/E estimate is 13.25 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 13.25 (year ago it was 12.46) and today's dividend yield is 2.44 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.37 (last year it was 2.56). The Dow's all-time high was 15,105.12 on May 8, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,964 down 2.93  from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,966.93. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $65.47 down 7 cents from Wednesday's average of $65.56. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $64.31 (DIS/UNH) up 11 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $64.20. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $292 ($196,693 - $196,400).

5/9/13 Thursday MarketWatch 4:20 by Kate Gibson says U.S stocks declined moderately on Thursday, halting Wall Street’s record-setting streak, even as data showed that weekly jobless claims fell to a five-year low.“We’ve come a long way in the first four-and-a-half months of the year, so we’re ripe for a small correction,” said Joe Heider, regional managing principal for Rehmann Financial Group.Any pullback would likely fall into the 5%-to-7% range, he added.Steven Russolillo has details on key stocks to watch on Thursday, among them Green Mountain Coffee, Tesla and Groupon. After rising as much as 39 points and falling as much as 58, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.15% lost 22.50 points to end at 15,082.62.After five straight record-high finishes, the S&P 500 index SPX -0.37%  lost 6.02 points to 1,626.67, with utilities hardest hit and health care faring best among its major sectors.“The vast majority of our business clients and owners are doing very well, and are in full recovery mode, yet they are not feeling very positive,” said Heider, who attributes the negative sentiment to lingering fallout from the near-meltdown of the U.S. financial system and ongoing dysfunction in Washington.“The shock was so severe in ‘08 and first quarter of ’09, so there is a hangover effect. And, I’ve never seen Washington as hell-bent on destroying one another,” he said.Randy Frederick, managing director of active trading and derivatives at Charles Schwab, said: “Technically, the S&P 500 is in uncharted waters. People say there should be resistance at such and such, but there are no moving averages up there, so the only thing I can chart is the upward trend, and going to 1,650 within the next week or two is very realistic.”Moving issues included Barnes & Noble Inc. BKS +24.25% , its shares surging 24% after a report by TechCrunch that Microsoft Corp. MSFT -1.00%  was considering an offer to pay $1 billion for the digital assets of Nook Media, a joint venture between the bookseller and other investors.Tesla Motors Inc. TSLA +24.40%   leapt 24% a day after the electric-car maker reported its first profitable quarter. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.12% declined 4.10 points to 3,409.17.For every stock on the rise, nearly two fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where 662 million shares traded.Composite volume approached 3.4 billion.“Profit-taking is the only thing that makes sense,” Frederick said of the losses that initially followed government data that cast an unexpectedly positive light on the labor market.“The trend is still intact,” added Frederick, referring to the third consecutive weekly decline in applications for unemployment benefits. The Labor Department reported an unexpected drop in jobless claims, which last week fell by 4,000 to 323,000. The less-volatile four-week moving average fell to 336,750, its lowest level since November 2007.Equities had wavered between gains and losses as the U.S. dollar rose above 100 yen USDJPY +1.60%  for the first time in four years, with the U.S. currency extending gains versus Japan’s currency amid deflation-curbing moves by the Bank of Japan.Crude prices declined, with oil futures CLM3 -0.78%  down 23 cents to $96.39 a barrel.
