http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,420 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of Oct. 22  and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of Oct. 22.

A read of the print editions of  Tuesday's Wall St. Journal,  Financial Times, Investor's News Daily, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & amp; Constitution  & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and  Monday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 15568.93 down 1.35 or 0.01% from Friday's close of 15570.28.  For the year the Dow is up 18.81%. Of  the Dow components  17   gained  and  13  declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Procter & Gamble $1.30 or 1.62% .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise  was   United Technologies down $1.53 and percentage-wise was Merck down 2.56%.

WSJ pC4 "Another high for S&P 500" by Tomi Kilgore says a mixed day for US markets didn't keep the S&Pf rom its 3rd daily advance in a row & its 32nd record close this year due to soft economic data & mixed corp profit reports.  Merck is charted under Bad News as 3Q earnings fell 35% amid the loss of its exclusivity for its Singulair treatment for asthma.

IBD pB2 "Indexes end basically flat as profit news dominates" by Juan Carlos Arancibia says the stock market closed narrowly mixed Mons till flagging a bit following its run up earlier this month as the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

FT p23 "Merck slides after 3Q earnings miss rev estimate" by Jason Abbruzese says Merck moved lower but the S&P touched another record high as company earnings were in focus. The consumer staples sector was led by a 1.5% rise by Coke to $39.61 and a 1.6% gain by Procter & Gamble.

NYT pB6 "Markets hold their ground as investors wait for the Fed" by Reuters says the stock market showed little change Mon as expectations were high that the Fed wold decide to keep its stimulus in place when it meets next week.

AJC pA11 "S&P logs record close" by Steve Rothwell, AP says the S&P notched another record close as good news from JC Penney offset poor earnings from several US firms.

As of the open  of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5   of  Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Tuesday's   trailing P/E ratio is  17.44 up  from Monday's  trailing P/E of 17.42  (last year it was 13.95);  today's   P/E estimate is  14.65 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 14.65  (year ago it was 12.35) and today's  dividend yield is 2.15 unchanged from yesterday's  dividend yield of 2.15  (last year it was 2.59). The Dow's all-time high was 15,676.94   on September 18, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2424.33 down 0.21   from Friday's closing numerator of 2424.54. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $80.81 down 1 cent from Friday's average closing price of 80.82.  The median closing price of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $76.60 (HD/WMT) up 71 cents from Friday's median closing price of $75.89 (NKE/WMT).  The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was Microsoft.

If  Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $21    ($242,454 - $242,433).

MarketWatch 10/28/13 Mon. 4:09 pm by William L. Watts says US stocks indexes posted a mixed finish, ending little changed as investors stuck to the sidelines ahead of earnings from Apple Inc. AAPL +0.74% after the closing bell and a meeting later this week of Federal Reserve policy makers. The S&P 500 SPX +0.13% rose 2.34 points, or 0.1%, 1,762.11, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.0087% was off 1.35 points, or less than 0.1%, at 15,568.93.
