A read of the print editions of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal,  Financial Times, Investor's News Daily, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & amp; Constitution  & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and  Tuesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 15680.35 up 111.42 or 0.72% from Monday's close of 15568.93. For the year the Dow is up 19.7%. WSJ pC4 "IBM puts the Dow at peak" by Kaitlyn Kiernan says the Dow Jones Industrial Average finished at a record high amid positive signals from the US economy  corp America.  The Tow topped the previous record from Sept. 18.  IBM helped push the Dow to tis record after its boosted its stock buyback program and was up $4.77 or 2.7% after authorizing an add'l $15 bil in share repurchases.

IBD pB4 "S&P 500 hits record high as Apple drags on nasdaq" by Vincent Mao says stocks gained Tues as the blue chips led the pack with a jump in IBM helping the Dow hit a record high.  Tuesday's action saw stocks rise in higher trad3e while the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

NYT pB10 "Major indexes keep rising on belief the Fed will stand pat on stimulus" by Reuters says the Dow and the S&P climbed to nominal record highs on Tues after new economic data reinforced investors' expectations that the Fed would keep its stimulus program intact for several more months.  IBM gave the biggest lift to the Dow and helped drive the S&P.

AJC pA11 "Hopes for Fed spark Dow record" by Steve Rothwell says IBM's $15 bil stock purchase program boosted Dow to a record high.

USAT p1B "Stock market shakes off Oct. ghosts" by Adam Shell sand says the S&P 500 is poised for its best month in 2 years.

As of the open  of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5   of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Wednesday's   trailing P/E ratio is  17.56 up  from Tuesday's  trailing P/E of 17.44  (last year it was 13.95);  today's   P/E estimate is  14.65 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 14.65  (year ago it was 12.35) and today's  dividend yield is 2.14 down from yesterday's  dividend yield of 2.15  (last year it was 2.59). The Dow's all-time high was 15,680.35   on October 29, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2441.68 up 17.35   from Monday's closing numerator of 2424.33. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $81.39  up 58 cents from Monday's average closing price of 80.81.  The median closing price of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $76.71 (HD/NKE) up 11 cents from Monday's median closing price of $76.60 (HD/WMT).  The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was AT&T.

If  Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,735   ($244,168 - $242,433).

MarketWatch 10/29/13 Mon. 4:42 pm by Victor Reklaitis & Wallace Witkowski says  U.S. stocks finished higher Tuesday with both blue-chip stocks and the S&P 500 index setting record closing highs, as results from Pfizer Inc. and an International Business Machines stock buyback stoked momentum. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.72%   gained 111.42 points, or 0.7%, to close at 15,680.35, topping its former closing high from mid-September, its 32nd record close of the year. IBM IBM -0.10%  led the index, closing up 2.7%, after the company authorized an additional $15 billion stock buyback, followed by shares of AT&T Inc. T +1.97%  and Home Depot Inc. HD -0.13%  Pfizer Inc. PFE +0.58%  also fed the blue-chip rally with a 1.7% gain following its quarterly earnings report before the open.

COMP 3,952.34, +12.21, +0.31%

Nasdaq Composite on Tuesday
The S&P 500 SPX +0.56%   notched its 33rd record close of the year, finishing up 9.84 points, or 0.6%, at 1,771.95. Telecom and consumer staples fared best among S&P 500 sectors, while materials and utilities performed the worst.
The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.31%  rose 12.21 points, or 0.3%, to close at 3,952.34, after being frozen for nearly an hour because of a “human error” in the data distribution system. The index reached an intraday high of 3,957.12. The tech-heavy index was weighed down by a 2.5% decline for shares in Apple Inc., which posted earnings late Monday.Earlier in the day, the main indexes pulled back from then-session highs after a couple of economic reports at 10 a.m. Eastern time, including one that showed consumer confidence made a surprisingly steep drop in October.“The confidence data was something that did weigh on the market,” said Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott, in a phone interview on Tuesday. But he noted the drop in confidence may have been mostly due to “Washington dysfunction,” meaning the government standoff earlier this month, saying he’s waiting on additional confidence data in the next month or two.
Tuesday’s moves by the major indexes followed narrowly mixed action on Monday, when the Dow and Nasdaq ended close to the flat line, and the S&P 500 inched up to reach a record for a second straight session. Most analysts expect the Federal Reserve to stand pat on its accommodative stance, given the Fed’s coming change in leadership, the recent weak economic data and the government shutdown and debt-ceiling battle earlier in the month. In its accompanying policy statement, however, the Fed is likely to keep its options open about any tapering of its purchases before the end of the year. The decision is expected after the meeting ends Google's smartwatch is in late-stage development and the device, which will run on Android, will be integrated with Google Now, the company’s digital assistant. The WSJ's Yun-Hee Kim speaks with Eva Dou about what to expect from Google's smartwatch. In September, market participants expected the policy makers to start scaling back the $85-billion-a-month asset-purchase program, but the central bank surprised by waiting for more evidence of an economic recovery before pulling the tapering trigger.
“With [Chairman] Ben Bernanke now in the autumn of his tenure at the Fed and no press release scheduled for this meeting, the overwhelming consensus is that nothing will happen on the taper front. But the wrong footing at the September meeting has traders a little cautious and reminded them that the ‘consensus’ can be 100% wrong,” said Jonathan Sudaria, dealer at London Capital Group, in a note. He added that investors should “expect markets to tread water” until after the Fed decision.
Janney’s Luschini said if the Fed statement suggests the economy hasn’t deteriorated, that could imply a January tapering for the central bank’s bond-buying program. But if there has been some deterioration, “I’d probably say that pushes the odds out to a March tapering,” the strategist said.
While investors were absorbing a flurry of economic reports on Tuesday, strategists have played down their significance. Most of Tuesday’s reports should have come out earlier in October, providing a more timely reading on economic activity, but they were delayed by the U.S. government shutdown.“The good news is it’s retail sales day — the bad news is it is the September reading and so it is hard to make the claim that the flurry of data on Tuesday morning will mean that much to investors,” said Andrew Wilkinson, chief economic strategist at Miller Tabak & Co., in emailed comments on Tuesday. Before the open, the Commerce Department said September retail sales dipped, while economists had expected no change. The Labor Department said the producer-price index slipped in September, missing expectations for a slight rise. Also before the bell, S&P/Case-Shiller reported its home-price index rose 1.3% in August, the smallest monthly gain since March. At 10 a.m. Eastern time, the Commerce Department said business inventories rose 0.3% in August, below expectations for 0.4%. In addition, the Conference Board reported confidence among American consumers fell in October to the lowest level in six months. Its consumer-confidence index slumped to 71.2 in October from a revised 80.2 in September. Economists polled by MarketWatch had projected the index to drop to 75 in October. In other financial markets, most European equities were higher, while Asian stocks closed mixed. Gold and oil prices were lower, pressured by a stronger dollar.
