The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Wednesday at 17138.20  up 77.52  or 0.45%   from Tuesday's close of 17060.68. For the year the Dow is up 3.4%. IBD pb2 "S&P 500, Dow transports lead gains; IBD 50 slumps" by David saito-Chung says the key stock averages notched modest gains Wed and the Dow marked an all time high as Wed's action saw indexes up in higher trade and the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.  Intel soared 9% .

FT p21 "Wall Street" by Eric Platt says Intel rose 7% after it reported revenues climbed to $13.8bn from $12.8bn in the same quarter a year earlier, helped by corp demand for traditional PCs.

NYT pB10 "merger possibilities and earnings inspire the markets" by Reuters says the Dow closed at a new high as investors were encouraged by the latest merger news and some strong corp earnings.  Intel climbed 9.3% after its 2Q results topped estimates.  IBM and Apple's partnership lifted the market, too.

AJC pA11 "Another record for Dow" by AP says major stock indexes rebounded Wed, finishing higher for the 3rd time in 4 days & lifting the Dow to its 2nd record close this month.  Investors drove Time Warner's stock up on news that Twenty-First Century Fox made a takeover bid.  Other deals involving Apple and IBM lifted the market.  Intel's strong 2Q earnings Tues and news that Apple & IBM are teaming up to sell more iPhones & iPads to corp customers lifted the market.

As of the open of  the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5  of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.70 up from Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.64  (last year it was 16.73).  Thursday's P/E estimate is 15.13 up from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 15.12 (year ago it was 13.55) and Thursday's dividend yield is 2.14 down  from  Wednesday's dividend yield of 2.15 (last year it was 2.37). The Dow's all-time high was 17068.26 on July 3,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2668.69 up 12.81  from  Tuesday's   numerator of 2655.88.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.96 up 43 cents from Tuesday's  average closing price of $88.53.  The median closing price of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $82.35  (PG/UNH)  up 23 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $82.12 (PG/UNH). The lowest volume was  Travelers   and the highest volume was Intel.

If  Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,281  ($266,869 - $265,588).

7/16/14 Wednesiday 4:03   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahumudova  & Barbara Kollmeyer  says  the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at a record level on Wednesday for the 15th time this year, as better-than-expected corporate earnings and deal talk lifted broader markets.
The Federal Reserve’s Beige Book, which said that economic conditions and labor markets showed improvement across the country into early July, gave stocks a late lift.

Sara Murray and Roger Bayston discuss Fed Chairwoman Janet Yellen's congressional testimony,.
Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen concluded her two-day appearance testifying on Capitol Hill. In her comments, she stressed a softer line on stock valuations, saying the Fed doesn’t have a target for equity values. The central bank instead looks to see if valuations are outside historical norms.
“In that sense, I am not seeing alarming warning signals,” she said Wednesday. Read the recap of Yellen’s testimony on this live blog .

But most of investors’ attention was on earnings and M&A news.
Time Warner Inc. TWX +0.22%  shares jumped 17% as the media company confirmed it had rejected an $80 billion offer from 21st Century Fox FOXA -6.22% .
“The news about Time Warner’s rejection of a takeover bid by 21st Century Fox signals that corporations are healthy and see value in assets that the public markets do not see. And if companies deliver on 5% earnings growth estimate, then current multiples and prices on the S&P 500 are justified,” said Joe Peta, managing director at Novus, a financial technology company.
