The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Monday at 17024.21 down 44.05 or 0.26%   from Thursday's close of 17068.26. Of the Dow components 11   gained and  19   declined.   The biggest gainer   dollar-wise  was Boeing and percentage-wise was Johnson & Johnson up 1%. As of the open of  the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of  Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.69 up from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.60  (last year it was 16.38).  Monday's P/E estimate is 15.26 up from Thursday's P/E estimate of 15.05 (year ago it was 13.42) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.14 down  from  Thursday's dividend yield of 2.17 (last year it was 2.47). If  Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $686  ($265,780 - $265,094).

7/7/14 Monday 4:05   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahumudova  & Carla Mozee says The U.S. stock market on Monday gave up some of last week’s gains that sent the Dow Jones Industrial Average above 17,000 for the first time.
Investors took a step back to reassess Thursday’s stronger-than-expected jobs report while awaiting second-quarter earnings that start trickling in this week.
The S&P 500 SPX -0.39%  closed 7.8 points, or 0.4%, lower at 1,977.65, with only the defensive sectors, such as utilities, telecoms and consumer staples, ending with modest gains.
The Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA -0.26%  fell 44.05 points, or 0.3%, to 17,024.21. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.77% was dragged down by losses in biotech and Internet companies, ending the day down 34.4 points, or 0.8%, to 4,451.53.
The Russell 2000RUT -1.77%   underperformed other benchmarks, falling 21.31 points, or 1.8%, to preliminary 1,186.84.
Kristina Hooper, U.S. investment strategist at Allianz Global Investors, said investors overreacted to last week’s jobs data, as it’s likely that inflation, not a stronger economy, will be what pushes the Fed to raise interest rates.
“Investors are digesting and rereading the jobs report, hence we are saying markets pausing after record levels. Still, we think markets are too liberal in expecting rate hikes in the second half of 2015 and will be surprised if it happens sooner,” she said.
The new earnings season begins Tuesday with results from aluminum producer Alcoa Inc. /quotes/zigman/246295/delayed/quotes/nls/aa AA -1.60% after the bell. Another highlight is Wells Fargo & Co. /quotes/zigman/239557/delayed/quotes/nls/wfc WFC +0.04% on Friday.
Earnings for the S&P 500 are expected to rise by 4.9% for the quarter, according to FactSet, and with stock prices extending their reach to new highs, investors are likely to be less forgiving if companies miss Wall Street’s expectations. Analysts have reduced their earnings estimates by the lowest amount since the second quarter of 2011, said John Butters, senior earnings analyst at FactSet.
Among individual companies, American Apparel Inc. rallied 1.7% after The Wall Street Journal reported the retailer is in talks to raise new financing following the ouster of CEO Dov Charney.

7/3/14 Thursday 1:18    pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahumudova  & Carla Mozee says The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at record levels in a holiday-shortened week, fueled by a jobs report that was far stronger than expected but nonetheless isn’t shifting expectations about when the Federal Reserve will start raising interest rates.
Both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq closed early at 1 p.m. Eastern Time for the July 4th holiday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.54%  closed 92.41 points, or 0.6%, higher at the preliminary 17,068.26 and gained 1.3% over the week. The S&P 500 SPX +0.55%   added 10.81 points, or 0.6%, to 1,985.343 and was 1.3% higher on the week. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.63%  added 28.19 points, or 0.6%, to 4,485.93 and finished the week with a 2% gain, its third weekly gain in a row.
Investors clearly welcomed a strong employment data, but decided the subdued wage growth means the Fed won’t speed up its timetable for ending its unusually loose monetary policy.
“While the slack in the labor market is tightening, wage growth is still contained. This means that companies are still able to keep their profit margins. And as the ISM numbers indicated, services-sector growth is slowing slightly. Markets would like to see economic growth without a jump in inflation and that is a hard balance to keep,” said Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial .
The U.S. economy added 288,000 new jobs in June, and the unemployment rate fell to 6.1%. Meanwhile, weekly jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs, ticked up 2,000 to 315,000 in the week ended June 28, hovering near a postrecession low for several months, the Labor Department said.
Among individual stocks, PetSmart Inc.PETM +0.30%   led gains on the S&P 500, jumping nearly 13% after revealing that hedge fund Jana Partners had acquired a 9.9% stake in the company. Movers and Shakers column has more on Thursday’s gainers and losers.
In other markets, Asian stocks finished mixed, with the Nikkei Average JP:NIK -0.14%  slipping 0.1%. The Stoxx Europe 600 XX:SXXP +0.93% rose as the European Central Bank held key interest rates unchanged, as expected.
U.S. benchmark oil futures CLQ4 -0.43%  fell 57 cents to $103.91 a barrel, and gold futures GCQ4 -0.78%  fell $9.20 to $1,321.8.
