Post No. 2,918 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Tuesday's  Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Monday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Monday at 17647.75 up 13.01 or 0.07% from Friday's close of 17634.74. For the year the Dow is up 6.46 %. Of the Dow components  14  gained, IBM was unchanged and 15  declined. The biggest gainer   dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was UnitedHealth up $1.36 or 1.43 %.  The biggest decliner dollar-wise   was Chevron down 57 cents and percentage-wise was down  American Express down 0.6%.

WSJ pC6 "Easy money trumps Asia's economic woes" by Dan Strumpf says the S&P eked out a record close as investor attention was focused on Japan's economic woes and the potential for central bank stimulus in Europe.

FT p21 "Wall street" by Mamta Badkar, Eric Platt says US stocks appeared to give up gains after 4 straight weeks of gains after Us industrial production missed expectations & the Japanese economy unexpectedly entered into a recession in 3Q.

IBD pB3 "Stocks end on mixed note as listless action rolls on" by Vincent Mao says stocks ended mixed in a back and forth session Mon as the action was split action in lower trade and the current outlook is confirmed uptrend.

NYT pB7 "Corporate deals counter Japan's recession" & AJC pA13 "Stocks mixed after Japan drop" by AP says US markets were mixed following news that Japan's economy slid into recession in 3Q.

As of the open of  the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of  Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Tuesday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.77 up from Monday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.57  (last year it was 16.41).  Tuesday's P/E estimate is 15.52 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 15.52 (year ago it was 15.02) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.17 down from  Monday's dividend yield of 2.41  (last year it was 2.06). The Dow's all-time high was 17652.79 on November 13,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2748.04 up 2.04  from  Friday's   numerator of 2746.00.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $91.60 up 7 cents from Friday's  average closing price of $91.53.  The median closing price of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $92.76  (DIS/XOM) down 19 cents from Friday's median closing price of $92.95 (DIS/XOM). The lowest volume was Travelers  and the highest volume was Cisco.

If  Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made  $204  ($274,804- $274,600).

11/17/14 Mon. 4:37 MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Carla Mozee says After flipping between small gains and losses in a choppy trading day, U.S. stocks ended fractionally higher. A small gain on the S&P 500, however, was enough to push the index to a record close, its 42nd this year. Stocks were under pressure in the morning trade following news that Japan fell into recession and less-than-stellar manufacturing data in the U.S. Comments from European Central Bank president Mario Draghi, who said that the ECB would be open to buying government bonds, if needed, buoyed U.S. stocks in afternoon trade before pulling back somewhat. Overall, U.S. stocks seemed hesitant to make a break-out move in either direction. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.07%  added 1.5 points to 2,041.43, new record close. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.07%  hovered near record levels, but closed just below it after adding 13 points, or 0.1%, to 17,647.75. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.37%  finished the day down 17.5 points, or 0.4%, at 4,671.00Economic data: The Empire State manufacturing index, the first of the many regional manufacturing gauges to be released, rebounded slightly in November, but is still well below September levels, indicating a downshift in activity. Separately, industrial production fell unexpectedly in October, the second drop in the last three months, the Federal Reserve said Monday. In a sign that falling oil prices are beginning to effect the energy industry, oil and gas well drilling fell for the first time since February.  Meanwhile, Japan’s real gross domestic product shrank 1.6% in the third quarter, contributing to the decline was companies cutting inventories and subdued capital investment. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had, on average, been looking for the economy to expand by 2.25%. Stocks to watch: Baker Hughes Inc. BHI, +8.92% shares surged 8.9% after Halliburton Co. HAL, -10.62% agreed to purchase its rival oil-services provider in a cash-and-stock deal valued at $34.6 billion. The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2015. Halliburton shares fell 11%.Tyson Foods Inc. TSN, +5.83%  shares climbed 5.8% as the meat producer said quarterly sales rose 14%.Botox maker Allergan Inc. AGN, +5.31%  neared a deal to be acquired by Actavis PLC ACT, +1.71% according to The Wall Street Journal. Allergan prices jumped 5.3%, and Actavis shares rose 1.7%.Hasbro Inc. HAS, +4.35%  shares rose 4.4% as merger talks between the Transformers toy maker and DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. DWA, -14.26%   fell through, according to reports.  Other markets: Japanese stocks sank after the GDP report, leaving the Nikkei Stock Average NIK, -2.96%  down 3%. The Japanese yen, meanwhile, slid to a seven-year low against the U.S. dollar USDJPY, +0.09% but recovered somewhat allowing the dollar to buy more than ¥116. The country’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he will decide on whether to move forward with a planned sales-tax increase following analysis of the situation, according to media reports Monday. Abe may also call for a snap election to be held next month. “The stock market and currency could remain volatile until Mr. Abe confirms his intentions. There is, of course, the prospect of further economic stimulus as well,” said Richard Troue, head of investment analysis, at Hargreaves Lansdown, in a Monday note.
December crude-oil futures CLZ4, -0.49% fell 0.9%, resuming a run of losses. European stocks SXXP, +0.48%  closed higher after Mario Draghi comments on potential purchases of government bonds. Gold futures GCX4, -0.19%  were flat at about $1,185.7 an ounce.
