Post No. 425. The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Towards the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 5/1/10 and an update of the Dow 30 component's SEC filings as of 5/10/10.

A read of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today & Atlanta Journal & Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Monday's stock prices and related data.

Dow The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 10,785.14 up 404.71 or 3.9% from Friday's close of 10,380.43. For the year the Dow is up Of the 30 Dow Companies: all 30 gained and none declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Caterpillar CAT $66.69 +4.59 7.39% 11,845,920 NYSE.

WSJ pC1 "Bailout, Indeed: Dow up 404" by Peer McKay, Mark Gongloff says Europe's gambit aimed at staunching the onslaught of a new credit crisis had its desired market effect as stocks soared around the world, the euro jumped and sovereign debt yields retreated from sky high levels.

WSJ pC "Catepillar, GE Rise: Dean Foods Falls" by Donna Yesalavich says stocks posted their biggest one day gains in a year as a nearly $1 tril bailout package to help stabilize euro zone nations lifted a broad range of shares, including Caterpillar, Bank of America and GE. Mcdonald's is charted under Good News saying global same store sales rose in April on growth at all 3 regional segments and Cisco is under Good New says tech shares benefited from the European rescue plan.

Fin Times p24 "Tech & fin'l shares lead the charge" by Masa Serdarevic says US stock prices surged on the opening bell yesterday & maintained those levels until the close as markets welcomed a package announced over the weekend to address some of the eurozone's sovereign debt problems.

NYT pB1 "Stocks Soar After Europe Announces Rescue Plan" by Christine Hauser says after a bruising 5 sessions last week that erased all of the year's gains, inluding a momentary free fall on Thurs that remains largely unexplained, stock indexes roared back on Mon. Credit markets also recovered from their malaise.

USA Today p1B "EU's life preserver buoys Dow" by Adam Shell says a nearly $1 tril lifeline designed to stabilize wobbly Europe and ring fence its debt problems sparked the Dow average to a 405 gain Mon, its biggest gain in more than a year.

As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132319125 unchanged, the trailing P/E ratio is 15.93 up from Monday's open of 15.33 (year ago it was 42.31) the P/E estimate is 12.27 down from Monday's 12.84 (year ago it was 23.95) and the current dividend yield is 2.564 down from Monday's 2.64 (it was 3.65 a year ago). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,427.08 up 53.55 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,373.53. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase of 53.55 for Monday by the divisor (0.132319125) you get the increase in Monday's Dow of 404.71. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $47.57 up 1.79 from Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $45.78. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was 42.52 up 1.84 from Friday's median closing price of $40.68. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $85.97 +3.34 4.04% 6,271,591 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $17.3 +1.12 6.92% 267,749,019 NYSE.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $5,357 ($142,710 - $137,353).
