The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,500.60 up 1.36 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,499.24. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. MarketWatch Wednesday 11/10/10 4:31 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S stocks finished higher on Wednesday as the dollar lost some of its recent steam as leaders assembled in Asia for a gathering intended to protect the global recovery. “We continue to be in lockstep with the dollar. The stock rally from September is due largely to dollar weakness,” said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at Jefferies & Co. Stock indexes trimmed the bulk of their losses as energy companies gained along with the price of crude oil.“If in the longer run inflation is something we’re trying to attain, it’s knocking at the door here,” said Hogan of the recent climb in commodity prices. After wavering between gains and losses, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,357, +10.29, +0.09%) ended up 10.29 points at 11,357.04, with 15 of its 30 components falling.Blue-chip losses were led by Boeing Co. (BA 66.90, -0.17, -0.25%) its shares off 3.2% after the manufacturer halted test flights of its new 787 passenger jet to figure out what caused a recent emergency landing. The S&P 500 Index (SPX 1,219, +5.31, +0.44%) rose 5.31 points to 1,218.71, with financials up the most and utilities weighing among its 10 sectors. After running up to its highest level since the end of October, the dollar index (DXY 77.75, +0.31, +0.40%) dipped back under 77.64.On the earnings front, General Motors Co. said it earned $2 billion in the third quarter, with the earnings report coming ahead of the auto maker’s initial public stock offering next week.Macy’s Inc. (M 24.71, -0.15, -0.60%) also reported turning a profit in the third quarter, with the department store operator also hiking its outlook for second-half revenue at stores open at least a year. And in a positive sign for the labor market, the government reported the third drop in four weeks in first-time claims for unemployment benefits.Yet equities and other assets were largely tracking moves in the currency markets, with the dollar losing about 10% since the end of September on “anticipation of quantitative easing” announced last week by the Federal Reserve, with U.S. equities climbing as the dollar weakened,
The Fed’s plan to buy U.S. bonds in a bid to push interest rates down to spur spending and bank lending has had the dollar weakening against other currencies, making U.S. exports less expensive to holders of other currencies.“It wasn’t as if the announced quantitative easing by the FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) wasn’t well telegraphed, but now that it’s official, the negative reaction is gaining momentum,” said Marc Pado, an equity strategist at Miller Tabak.
The Fed’s program has not sat well with Germany, Japan and China, and is considered a likely topic at the Group of 20 summit that begins Thursday in Seoul.
“The Fed moves must be very annoying for a country trying to peg its currency to the dollar to maintain a low currency exchange rate well below levels that the free market would prefer. Really? China’s going to complain about currency intervention,” asked Pado in a research note.As for the G-20 meeting in South Korea, “we’re coming in with less leverage in talking about things like currency imbalances as we debase our currency,” said Hogan. For every two stocks on the decline two were rising on the New York Stock Exchange, where more than 1.1 billion shares traded
