Post No. 745 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 component's SEC filings.

A read of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal, New York Times, USA Today & Miami Herald yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data.

Dow:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 11,036.37 down 142.21 or 1.27% from Monday's close of 11,152.09. Of the 30 Dow Jones component companies only Hewlett-Packard gained and 29 declined. The only and biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard HPQ $44.19 +0.94 2.17% 51,524,038 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM $143.18 -2.21 1.52% 4,570,032 NYSE and percentage-wise was Microsoft MSFT $25.12 -0.61 2.37% 69,781,936 NASDAQ-GS.

WSJ pC5 "Dow falls 142.21, led by Microsoft by Steven Russolillo says stocks tumbled as investors fretted over the skirmish between N. Korea and S. Korea, lingering eurozone debt uncertainty & the fed res downgrading its US economic projections. Microsoft led the Dow's declines, slumping 61 cents. Hewlett-Packard was the only component of the Dow to rise, gaining 94 cents due to strong 4Q results and a better than expected forecast.

NYT pB9 "Wall St falls, unsettled by debt crisis & Korea" by Christine Hauser says shares on Wall St. declined on Tues as heightened uncertainty over conflictin Asia and the debt crisis in Europe sent investors fleeing for safer assets.

USA Today p6B "Global worries push markets down" by Bloomberg says stocks dropped for a 2nd day on Tues after fighting broke out between N. & S. Korea & concern grew that Europe's debt crisis & China's efforts to tame inflation will slow the global economic rebound.

As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Mon's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.08 down from Tuesday's 14.26(year ago it was 18.10); the P/E estimate is 13.17 unchanged from Tuesday's 13.17 (year ago it was 16.04) and the dividend yield is 2.58 up from Tuesday's 2.55 (last year it was 2.67). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,458.23 down 16.30 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,473.52. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $48.61 down 0.51 from Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $49.12. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $43.07 (HPQ/AXP) up 0.33 from Monday's closing median price of $42.73. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $83.59 -1.31 1.54% 3,933,017 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $11.09 -0.21 1.86% 199,114,607 NYSE.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,529 ($147,352 - $145,823)
