The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 12,442.49 down 156.06 or 1.24% from Wednesday's close of 12,598.55.  Of the 30 Dow components 5 gained and 25 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Walmart. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Caterpillar.

As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.86 down from   yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.90 (year ago it was 14.21); today's P/E estimate is 12.11 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 12.11 (year ago it was 12.74) and today's dividend yield is 2.63 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.62 (last year it was 2.38). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thuursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,644.02 down 20.62 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,664.64. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.80 down $0.69 fromlWednesday's average closing price of $55.49. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $47.93 (DD/HD) down $1.38 from Wednesday's median closing price of $49.31. The lowest volume was 3M  and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $2,062 ($166,464 - $164,402).

Bloomberg News cited people familiar with the plan in reporting the personal computer and services provider is considering cutting as many as 25,000 jobs, or 8% of its workforce.Leading the blue-chip index’s limited risers, shares of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. WMT +4.21%  jumped 4.2% after the discount retailer reported a better-than-expected rise in first-quarter income.Ending at a four-month low, the S&P 500 Index SPX -1.51%   shed 19.94 points, or 1.5%, to 1,304.86, with consumer discretionary losing the most among its 10 industry sectors.Both the Dow and the S&P 500 were off for a fifth day.“We are in the midst of a garden-variety correction, and those tend to manifest themselves anywhere from 5% to 10% from peak to trough, and now the S&P 500 is down about 7% from its April high,” said Art Hogan, a market strategist at Lazard Capital Markets.
“The biggest driver for the recent sell off is our over-arching concern that Greece’s inevitable exit from the euro zone may cause a run on some of the other southern European banks, like in Spain, Portugal and Italy,” Hogan added.Sears Holdings Corp. SHLD +3.05%  shares rose 3.1% after the retailer reported a far smaller-than-expected first-quarter loss and said it planned to sell part of its Sears Canada unit.Off for a fourth session, the Nasdaq Composite / COMP -2.10%  declined 60.35, or 2.1%, to 2,813.69.For every stock gaining five fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where 945 million shares traded; composite volume topped 4.6 billion.The Labor Department said claims for jobless benefits held steady last week, while the Conference Board’s gauge of the outlook for the next three to six months fell 0.1% in April. Another report had manufacturing in the Philadelphia region contracting in May for the first time in eight months. Crude-oil futures /2203144 CLM2 +0.10%   finished lower for a fifth day, with the contract for June delivery closing at a six-month low of $92.56 a barrel.Moody’s Investors Service is ready to downgrade the ratings of two Spanish banks, according to reports citing people with knowledge of the matter.

A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.49 down $0.15 from Tuesday's average closing price of $55.64. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $49.31 (DD/HD) down $0.10 from Tuesday's median closing price of $49.41. The lowest volume was Travelers  and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $442 ($166,906 -  $166,464).

MarketWatch Wednesday 4:16 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks retreated Wednesday as anxiety over Greece's troubles derailed enthusiasm that came with upbeat economic reports on U.S. industrial output and housing. Down for a 10th out of the last 11 sessions, the Dow industrials fell 33.45 points, or 0.3%, to 12,598.55, its lowest close since January. The S&P 500 Index  SPX -0.44% declined 5.86 points, or 0.4%, to 1,324.80. The Nasdaq Composite  COMP -0.68% shed 19.72 points, or 0.7%, to 2,874.04.
