Post
No. 1,640 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities
Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30
current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market
capitalization as of May 16 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as
of May 16.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 12,496.15 down 6.66 or 0.05% from Tuesday's close of 12,502.81. Of the 30 Dow components 14 gained GE was unchanged and 15 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Caterpillar and percentage-wise was Bank of America. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Procter & Gamble and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard.

The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Caterpillar and percentage-wise was Bank of America. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Procter & Gamble and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard.
As
of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow
Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal
is 0.132129493. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.75 unchanged from
yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.75 (year ago it was 14.09);
today's P/E estimate is 11.75 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of
11.75 (year ago it was 12.62) and today's dividend yield is 2.65
unchanged from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.65 (last year it was
2.40). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12
year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to
6,547.05.
Tuesday's
Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,651.11 down .88
from Monday's closing numerator of 1,652.21. This is the sum of all 30
closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the
closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator
decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in
today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change
in the average.
The
average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.04 down .03 from Tuesday's
average closing price of $55.07. The median closing price of Wednesday's
Dow Jones Industrial Average was $48.73 (DD/HD) up $0.31 fromTuesday's
median closing price of $48.42. The lowest volume was Travelers and the
highest volume again was Bank of America.
If
Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares
of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you
could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold
at the close you would have lost $88 ($165,199 - $165,111).
MarketWatch Wednesday 4:38 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks turned mostly up Wednesday after another
late-session comeback that came as investors looked for hopeful signals
from Europe in dealing with a possible Greek departure from the euro. The New Tigers of the world have the potential to steal the spotlight from
their regional peers, defy the slowdown and reshape the global economy. Turkey and Poland dazzled observers with their economic performance
following the global credit crunch, but remain vulnerable to euro-zone
crisis. “The news is not all bad. Clearly Europe is a mess, but we knew that,”
said Bruce McCain, chief investment strategist at Key Private Bank.“We don’t have the downside for the U.S. economy like we did last year
with the Japanese supply disruptions, so the outlook domestically and
for emerging markets is quite a bit better than last year, and we now
know that the [European Central Bank] is likely going to backstop banks
there if they have to,” he added.Recovering from a 191-point drop, the Dow Jones Industrial Average

“I remain constructive on gold as a store of value, or an alternative
currency, but instead investors are using it as a source of cash or
stepping over to go to the more traditional bastions of safety, as in
the German bund, the U.S. dollar or Treasurys,” said Mark Luschini,
chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott. In Europe, German Chancellor Angela Merkel showed no sign of softening
her nation’s stance against eurobonds at a Wednesday summit with other
European leaders.
European leaders meeting in Brussels have not overcome their
intractable divide, and the odds of a messy Greek exit are growing.

“Today’s informal EU summit is not the real thing. It is out of the late
June summit that a new effort will likely emerge,” noted Marc Chandler,
global head of currency strategy at Brown Brothers Harriman.Bypassed were two reports on the housing sector. The Commerce Department
said sales of new homes rose 3.3% in April, while the Federal Housing
Finance Agency said home prices rose 1.8 in March.During the market’s extended rise earlier in the year, the market was
“completely overlooking the soft economic data, and now it’s the
opposite,” said Luschini at Janney Montgomery Scott. “What has been a
beleaguered gigantic hole in our economy, the housing market, is showing
signs of strength, and what it means for consumers, in terms of their
net wealth, is being completely overlooked.”

MarketWatch Tuesday 4:46 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks gains
evaporated Tuesday as investors looked to a gathering of European
leaders the next day, with concern about Europe overriding cheer that
came with upbeat housing data. “We’re
still fighting the downward pressure, I think a lot of that is related
to Europe,” said Andrew Fitzpatrick, director of investments at Hinsdale
Associates in Hinsdale, Ill. “The
outcome doesn’t need to be anything too dramatic or too complex, the
market is just looking for some sort of progress,” said Fitzpatrick of
Wednesday’s session of European Union leaders. After a 71-point rise, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.01% relinquished nearly 2 points to end at 12,502.81. The S&P 500 Index SPX +0.05% added nearly 1 point to 1,316.63, with natural-resource companies leading the losses among its 10 industry groups. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.29% fell 8.13 points, or 0.3%, to 2,839.08. Late
in the session, Dow Jones Newswires published comments from Greece’s
former prime minister warning the economic impact of Greece leaving the
euro zone would be severe. The euro EURUSD -0.08% slid below $1.27 after the reported remarks. Stocks
had gained after the National Association of Realtors reported sales of
existing homes last month climbed for the first month in four, up 3.4%
in April. “The
housing data has to be considered good news because some kind of
stabilization in housing would be an important positive or at least the
removal of a big negative for the economy,” said Ken Tower, a senior
analyst at Quantitative Analysis Service. The more housing improves, the better equities should do, offered Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG LLC. Looking
back several years, the relationship has been unsurprisingly tight and
we see no reason to think that the relationship will weaken going
forward,” Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG LLC, wrote in
an emailed note Advancers
ran just ahead of decliners on the New York Stock Exchange, where
nearly 846 million shares traded. Composite volume neared 4.1 billion.
Among Nasdaq listed shares, volume was 1.8 billion. Oil prices CLM2 -1.21%
fell 91 cents to close at $91.66 a barrel on the New York Mercantile
Exchange, while gold futures lost $12.10 to finish at $1,576.60 an ounce
on the Comex division of Nymex. Read more on oil futures.
The dollar DXY +0.86% gained against other currencies and Treasury prices fell, lifting the 10-year note 10_YEAR -0.28% yield to 1.775%. Shares of Best Buy Co. Inc. BBY +1.60%
rose 1.6% after the consumer-electronics retailer reported a 25% drop
in first-quarter profit but affirmed its 2012 profit outlook. Facebook
Inc. FB -0.68%
shares again topped the list of the most active Nasdaq stocks, with
volume topping 98 million. Shares dropped nearly 9% to $31, down 18%
from their initial public offering price, amid a game of finger pointing
over the social networking company’s trading debut Friday. But Towers
thinks the hand-wringing could prove short-lived. “The IPO wasn’t
managed very well, but the problems are probably transitory. It doesn’t
effect the number of users and the amount of potential revenue.” Google
Inc. GOOG -2.17%
stock “struggled a bit when it first went public,” he added of the
search engine, which closed just above $100 a share in its first day of
trading in August 2004, and is lately trading above $600 a share.
