11/9/12 Fri. am Disney's Profits Up; McDonald's Same Stores Sales Fall; Walmart Accused of Investing in India Stores

A read of the print editions of Friday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution &amp Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 12,811.32 down 121.41 or 0.94% from Wednesday's close of 12,932.73. For the year the Dow is up4.86 %. Of the Dow components 8 gained and 22 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Boeing up $1.12 and percentage-wise was Bank of America up 2.33%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was McDonald's down $1.71 and percentage-wise was Cisco down 2.21%.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks fall off cliff a 2nd day" by Matt Jarzemsky says the Dow fell to a mroe than 3 month low a a 2nd straight day of selling put the Dow on pace for its biggest weekly decline since June.  Investors turned their attention to the looming fiscal cliff & ts mix of automatic tax increases & spending cuts at the satrt of next year if a budget deal isn't reached.  Money managers are worried over sluggish corp earnings growth & Europe's debt crisis.

NYT pB6 "Worries about fiscal cliff still weigh on investors" by Reuters says stocks fell thurs as investors remained concerend about Washington's ability to find a solution for the fiscal cliff in coming weeks & the continuing debt crisis in Europe.  McDonald's sahres fell 2% after its first monthly decline in global sales since March '03.

USA Today p1B "Big name stocks hit bear markets" by Matt Krantz says stocks fell by triple digits thurs yanking the Dow down 434 points over the 2 days after the election.  The Dow is down 6% from its 52 week high.

IBD pB2 "Stocks skid a 2nd day; gold & firearms rise" by Paul Whitfield says a on Wed the nasdaq notched a high in the first 10 minutes and then retreated.  thursday's action was down in lower volume and the market is still in a correction.

Fin Times p26 "Equities slide to 3 month low after 2nd day of post poll pain" by Arash massoudi says US equities faced a 2nd day of sustained selling following Obama's re-election as stocks closed at their lowest level since Aug. 2.  Fin'ls were the only sector trading ost of the day in positive territory.  Bank of america rose 1.7% & JPMorgan lost 0.2%. 

As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of   Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.02 down from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.16 (year ago it was 12.79); today's P/E estimate is 12.37 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 12.37 (year ago it was 12.35) and Friday's dividend yield is 2.77 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.62 (last year it was 2.62). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,668.24 down 15.81 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,684.05. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.61 down 53 cents from Wednesday's average of $56.14. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $51.88 (DIS/UNH) down 32 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of 52.20. The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,581 ($168,405 - $166,824).

11/8/12 Thurs. 4:13 MarketWatch by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks on Thursday piled on losses for a second day, on worries about Europe's troubles and coming tax hikes and cuts, otherwise known as the fiscal cliff. "We got over the one great unknown, the election, to go to the next great unknown," said Paul Nolte, managing director at Dearborn Partners, of the deficit-reduction measures due to be implemented in January unless lawmakers reach an agreement. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA-0.94% fell 121.4 points, or 0.9%, to 12,811.3, its lowest level since late July. The S&P 500 index SPX-1.22%declined 17.02 points, or 1.2%, to 1,377.51, a low not seen since early August. The Nasdaq CompositeCOMP-1.42% lost 41.71 points, or 1.4%, to 2,895.58, its lowest close since late July.
