MarketWatch Tuesday 1/10/12 4:56 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks on Tuesday climbed along with the euro as a weaker U.S. currency helped drive up the price of oil, other dollar-denominated commodities and resource stocks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 Index closed at late July highs. “The main driver is a lower dollar. It still remains a euro-centric story, and the euro is rallying because things haven’t blown up over there, and now we’re unwinding that rush to safety that characterized the month of December,” said Paul Nolte, managing director at Dearborn Partners. After a 122-point jump earlier in the day, the Dow industrials DJIA +0.56% closed up 69.78 points, or 0.6%, at 12,462.47, its highest close since July 26. Bank of America Corp. BAC -0.30% led the gains that included 23 of its 30 components, rallying 5.7%. Dow component Alcoa Inc. AA -0.64% rose 0.2% a day after the aluminum producer reported a fourth-quarter loss but also projected growth in global demand for aluminum in 2012. Read the Tell blog on whether Alcoa results are a good bellwether for earnings season. “Alcoa’s earnings weren’t much to write home about,” added Nolte, who also questioned the wisdom of using the company’s bullish forecast as a gauge of what might be ahead, logic he likened to “using Iowa as a predictor for the presidential nominee — sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.” “There may be fewer negative surprises since expectations have been lowered,” said Ed Yardeni, chief investment strategist at Yardeni Research Inc. Investors might want to look at how corporations performed year over year, rather than whether they managed to beat reduced expectations, according to Nolte. “If I expected you to get an F and you get a D, it still stinks,” the analyst said. The S&P 500 SPX +0.89% gained 11.38 points, or 0.9%, to 1,292.08, with financials and natural-resource companies faring best among its 10 industry groups. Extending gains into a fourth session, the Nasdaq Composite Index COMP +0.97% gained 25.94 points, or 1%, to 2,702.50. For every stock falling more than three gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where 840 million shares traded hands. The euro EURUSD -0.23% advanced against the dollar as comments from a ratings agency provided some relief over France’s rating. Oil and gold jumped in New York, with crude futures CL2G -0.52% rising 93 cents to close at $102.24 a barrel and gold futures GC2G +0.23% rising 1.5% to end at $1,631.50 an ounce.
Trade data from China’s government showed that nation’s import growth declining to a two-year low last month, raising expectations for monetary easing for the second-largest global economy. The data helped support oil futures, analysts said.
