Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 12,758.85 up 83.1 or 0.66% from Tuesday's close of 12,675.75. For the year the Dow is up 4.41%. Of the 30 Dow components 24 gained and 6 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Caterpillar CAT $108.97 +2.68 2.52% 10,241,753 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard HPQ $28.32 -0.20 0.7% 12,572,535 NYSE.

WSJ pC1 "Fed lifts markets on rate outlook" by Matt Phillips says stocks, bonds & commodities soared while the US dollar dropped afgter Ben Bernanke and the Fed Res signaled it would keep interest rates low through '14.

Fin Times p24 "Apple's surge to top spot triggers wider stock rally for parts suppliers" by Ajay Makan says the S&P closed in bull market territory after climbing 0.9% to 1,326.07. Boeing opened sharply lower after disappointing analysts with its '12 forecast but the stock closed up 0.6%.

Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Stocks finish strong again, volume rises" by David Saito-Chung says the helicopter motioned that it's releasing more cash, and investors backed up the truck as stocks rallied broadly and extended their Jan advance Wed spurred by a surprise decision by the Fed Res to keep money ultracheap until at least late '14. Wednesday's action saw solid gains in higher trade asa the current outlook is the market is in a confirmed uptrend.

NYT pB12 "Apple's surge and the Fed's advisory on interest rates enliven markets" by Reuters says profits from Apple and a promise from the Fed Res to maintain rock bottom rates for at least 2 more years pushed stock market indexes higher on Wed.

USA Today p4B "Prospects of low rates, easy money into '14 boost stocks" by Bloomberg says stocks rose Wed sending the Dow to the highest level since May, as the Fed Res signaled low rates through '14 and didn't rule out bond purchases to bolster the economy.

As of the open of the market Thursday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.77 up from Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.68 (year ago it was 14.90); Thursday's P/E estimate is 12.05 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.05 (year ago it was 12.59), and today's dividend yield is 2.51 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.53 (last year it was 2.40). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,685.82 up 10.98 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,674.84. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.19 up $0.36 from Tuesday's average closing price of $55.83. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $47.73 (AXP/HD) up $0.56 from Tuesday's median closing price of $47.17. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $85.48 +0.55 0.64% 4,358,652 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $7.35 +0.06 0.82% 246,349,769 NYSE.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,098 ($1668,582 - $167,484).

Also, surging earnings from Apple Inc. AAPL +0.02%, the largest market-cap stock in the world, drove the Nasdaq Composite higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.66% rose 83.10 points, or 0.7%, to 12,758.85. The S&P 500 SPX +0.87% gained 11.41 points, or 0.9%, to 1,326.06; out of 16 trading sessions this year, it's risen for 13. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.14% jumped 31.67 points, or 1.1%, to 2,818.31.
