WSJ pC4 "Stocks make it 3 in row" by Christian Berthelesen says stocks gained for a 3rd straight session, pushing major indexes to a 6 month high on the back of good jobs data and bank earnings. Bank of America led the Dow rising 16 cents after reporting good 4Q rev. Microsoft fell 11 cents but rose after hours even though fiscal 2Q profit slipped.

NYT pB8 "Sahres rise for a 3rd day on bank earnings" by Reuters says stock roses for the 3rd straight day Thurs helped by results from Bank of America and Morgan Stanley & a report showign that the latest jobless claims dropped to a near 4 year low.

Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Stocks rise; NASDAQ up 9 of 10 days" by Paul Whitfield says stocks notched moderate gains Thurs. in mixed volume, extending their advance. The current outlook is the market is in a confirmed uptrend. Microsoft missed rev estimates but beat on earnings. Shares rose after hours. Intel rose modestly after hours after it reported results that were above estimates for rev and earnings. IBM was up 3% after hours but it missed on rev but topped profit expectations.

USA Today p4B "Earnings optimism, falling jobless claims, boost stocks" by Bloomberg says stocks advanced Thurs, sending the S&P index higher for a 3rd consecutive day, as Bank of America rallied after swinging to a profit and jobless claims plunged to the lowest level in almost 4 year.

As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.63 down from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.67 (year ago it was 14.84); today's P/E estimate is 11.92 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 11.92 (year ago it was 12.75), and Friday's dividend yield is 2.54 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.55 (last year it was 2.43). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,668 up 5.95 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,662.05. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.60 up $0.20 from Wednesday's average closing price of $55.40. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $47.41 (DD/HD) up $0.24 from Wednesday's median closing price of $47.17. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $60.3 +0.41 0.68% 2,546,408 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $6.96 +0.16 2.35% 488,802,077 NYSE.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $595 ($166,800 - $166,205).

MarketWatch Thursday 1/19/12 4:53 pm by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks bumped to a higher close Thursday, extending their 2012 advance, as investors snapped up bank and Internet-related stocks following results from Bank of America Corp. and ahead of a quartet of tech bellwether results. Gains, however, were limited after the S&P 500 clocked its best start to the year since 1987 and with plenty of weak signs in earnings reports. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.36% rose 45.03 points, or 0.4%, to 12,623.98, its third straight day of gains and its highest close since July 22. It’s up 3.3% for the year. ”Recent economic news has showed the U.S. economy is improving, and we’re no longer falling off a cliff,” said Bryan Sadoff, chief investment officer at Sadoff Investment Management in Milwaukee. Jobs and housing data showing the worst is over, plus data signaling inflation pressure is subdued, “have brought investors back to the markets,” he said. A rise in Bank of America Corp. BAC -0.43% shares, up 2.4% to $6.96, led percentage gainers. Of the Dow’s 30 components, 20 were higher. Three of the Dow’s tech stocks -- International Business Machines Corp. IBM +2.34% , Intel Corp. INTC +0.20% and Microsoft Corp. INTC +0.20% -- released quarterly results along with Google, Inc. GOOG -8.60% after the close of regular trading. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP +0.67% added 18.62 points, or 0.7%, to 2,788.33, lifting its year-to-date gains to 7%. The S&P 500 Index SPX +0.49% gained 6.46 points, or 0.5%, to 1,314.5. By Wednesday’s close, it had rallied 4% for the first 11 trading days of the year — the best start of a year since 1987, according to S&P Indices. Consumer discretionary stocks -- mainly retail, media and Internet shares -- led S&P 500 gains on Thursday that included eight of the S&P 500’s ten sectors. F5 Networks Inc. FFIV -0.02% shares jumped 11% after the Internet networking-equipment maker reported a jump in earnings and a rosy profit outlook, saying telecommunications companies were prioritizing its gear over other types of spending. NetApp Inc. NTAP +8.25% shares rose 8.3%. Sears Holding Corp. SHLD +0.23% shares jumped 10%; it’s benefited from speculation it could be taken private by majority owner Eddie Lampert. Johnson Controls Inc. JCI +0.09% shares fell 8.9% after the maker of air and heating systems and car components cut its outlook for its fiscal 2012 second quarter, citing the declining value of the euro and lower automotive demand from Europe. “Stocks are tempted to rally as jobless claims improve and Europe stabilizes — at least for the day,” said Michael Yoshikami, chief investment officer of YCMNET Advisors in Walnut Creek, Calif. “Of course, the focus these next two weeks are on earnings and reports so far have been a decidedly mixed bag.” Stock futures had wavered then pushed higher after the U.S. Labor Department said jobless claims fell more than forecast in the latest week, down 50,000 to 352,000 .
Separately, a report showed consumer prices were flat last month, instead of rising 0.1% as predicted. Excluding food and energy, prices rose less than expected.
Also, housing starts fell 4.1% in December to a seasonally adjusted 657,000 annualized units, a slower-than-expected pace. The Dow average had briefly dropped into the red, then rebounded after an index of manufacturing activity from the Philadelphia region showed less strength than expected. Bank of America BAC -0.29% shares rallied after the bank said it swung to a fourth-quarter profit, though income was helped by several large one-time gains including a share sale and debt swap. Revenue rose 11% to $24.89 billion, topping analysts’ forecasts. Shares of Morgan Stanley MS +0.03% rose 5.4%. The bank swung to a fourth-quarter loss of $227 million, or 15 cents a share, as revenue fell 26% to $5.71 billion. Analysts had expected a loss of 57 cents on $5.57 billion. On Wednesday, the S&P 500 index SPX +0.49% closed above 1,300 for the first time since July 28 in the wake of improved housing sentiment data and upbeat earnings from Goldman Sachs Group Inc. GS +0.02%. The year-to-date rally in financials and technical indicators, such as the S&P 500 moving above its 200-day moving average, are also helping stocks extend gains, said Sadoff. “If you’re going to have a healthy bull market in stocks, you need to have financials participate,” he said.
