8/21/12 Tues am Augusta Admits Women but not IBM's CEO

Post No. 1,773 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings in both cases as of 8/17/12.

A read of the print editions of Tuesday's  Wall St. Journal,   Financial Times,  Investor's Business Daily,  New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Monday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 13,271.64 down 3.56 or 0.03% from Friday's close of 13,275.2. For the year the Dow is up8.63 %.   Of the 30 Dow components 11 gained and 19 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was McDonald's up 75 cents and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard up 2.82%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was American Express down 72 cents or 1.25%.

WSJ pC4 "Dow edges down as stocks take a breather" by Matt Jarzemsky says US stocks took a pause as declines in telcomms & consumer discretionary shares outweighed strength in the tech sector.

NYT pB6 "Shares waver as worry rises on Europeand ebgt" by AP says stocks slipped Mon in one of the quietest trading sessions of the year.  Worries about European debt crept up again, & Apple became the most valuable firm of all time.

Fin Times p20 "Lowe's retreats as earnings miss forecasts & guidance is lowered" by Kandy Wong says consumer discretionary, which includes Lowe's, was the 2nd worst performer behind telecoms, while rival Home Depot was down 0.3%.  Microsoft dorpped 0.5%.

As of the open of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.12914682. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.05 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.31 (year ago it was 12.11); today's P/E estimate is 12.64 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 12.64  (year ago it was 11.11) and today's dividend yield is 2.53 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.64 (last year it was 2.81). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,713.98 down 0.46 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,714.44. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.12914682) you get the decrease in today's Dow .Each dollar increase in the Dow increases the Dow Jones Industrial Averageby 7.74.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $57.13 down 2 cents from Friday's average closing price of $57.15. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.53 (HD/DD) down 15 cents from Friday's median closing price of $53.68 (HD/DD). The lowest volume was 3M Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would havelost $52 ($171,450 - $171,398).

MarketWatch.com Mon. 4: 48 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks pared their losses Monday to close virtually unchanged as investors waited for events later in the week, including the minutes from the Federal Reserve’s last meeting, slated for release in two days. “This is central bank week, we’re all looking at Europe and the Fed,” said Paul Nolte, managing director at Dearborn Partners.
Economic reports since the Aug. 1 Federal Open Market Committee gathering have dented chances of a third round of quantitative easing by the Fed, although the release coming Wednesday is unlikely to illustrate that change.
“Even though the minutes are going to reflect they are leaving the door open, the odds have fallen since then because we’ve seen improvement in some of the data,” said Bill Stone, chief investment strategist at PNC Asset Management Group in Pittsburgh.
“We’re not falling apart; we’re not doing fabulously well either. You’d like to be more definitive, but there isn’t anything definitive,” said Nolte of recent U.S. economic reports.
Housing data later in the week could offer more direction, Nolte added.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 3.56 points, or 0.03%, to close at 13,271.64.
The S&P 500 Index SPX-0.0021% ended at 1,418.13, about flat compared with a close of 1,418.16 on Friday. Telecommunications were the hardest hit Monday and technology was the best performing of its 10 major industry sectors.
Coventry Health Care Inc.CVH+20.32% rallied 20% after Aetna Inc. AET+5.63% said it would purchase the medical-care supplier for about $5.6 billion. Shares of Aetna gained 5.%.
Apple Inc. AAPL+2.63% shares closed at a record of $665.15, up 2.6%.
At Friday’s close, Apple represented 4.73% of the S&P 500 index, with a market capitalization of $607.54 billion, according to Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&P Dow Jones Indices LLC. The Nasdaq Composite COMP-0.01% fell 0.38 point to 3,076.21.
Decliners slightly outweighed advancers on the New York Stock Exchange, where nearly 551 million shares traded. Composite volume pulled within reach of 2.8 billion.
“The NYSE volume has fallen off a cliff, not just compared to other Augusts but compared to everything, but composite volume hasn’t changed all that much. It’s down from prior years, but less than 10%, while the NYSE volume is down 30% to 40%,” said Nolte.

The U.S. dollar 3DXY-0.09% declined against other global currencies, including the euro EURUSD-0.0688%. Treasury prices rose, with the yield on the benchmark 10-year note 10_YEAR-0.17% falling to 1.814%.
Lowe’s Cos. LOW-5.78% fell 5.8% after the home-improvement retailer reported second-quarter earnings below estimates and reduced its earnings outlook. Read full story about Lowe’s.
Best Buy Co. BBY-10.41% tapped French restructuring expert Hubert Joly as its chief executive. Its shares fell 10% Monday after buyout talks with founder Richard Schulze floundered.
Meanwhile, “optimism was dealt a setback,” Stone said of the European Central Bank move to quell speculation about its planned bond-buying program, saying no decisions had been made.
Both the Dow and the S&P 500 on Friday sealed a sixth week of gains, their longest streaks since early 2011 and bringing the S&P within reach of a four-year high.
