8/7/12 Tues pm Dow Closes at 13,168.6 up 51.09 or 0.39%

Post No. 1,765 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 13,168.6  up 51.09 or 0.39% from Monday's close of 13,117.51. Of the 30 Dow components 21 gained and   9  declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was United Technologies up $1.45  and percentage-wise was Cisco up 2.70 %. The  biggest decliner dollar-wise was 86 cents and percentage-wise was Pfizer down 1.98%.

As of the open of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.42 up from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.28 (year ago it was 12.10); today's P/E estimate is 12.55 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 12.55 (year ago it was 11.48) and today's dividend yield is 2.58 unchanged from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.58 (last year it was 2.81). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,739.96 up 6.75 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,733.21. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $58 up 23 cents from Monday's average closing price of $57.77. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $51.37 (HD/DD) up 30 cents from Monday's median closing price of $51.07     (HD/DD. The lowest volume was 3M Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $675 ($173,996 - $173,321).

MarketWatch.com Tues. 3:58 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks
extended gains into a third day Tuesday, with the S&P 500 index hitting 1,400 for the first time since May, on thinking the U.S. recovery would survive Europe and other pitfalls.A Federal Reserve president calls for the launch of additional steps to stimulate the U.S. economy.“The environment has changed for a lot of reasons, but the most important is investors generally came to the conclusion that although the risks are fairly substantial, neither the fiscal cliff nor the European contraction is going to derail the U.S. recovery. It’s going to continue, albeit it at an anemic pace,” said Hugh Johnson, chairman of Hugh Johnson Advisors.
“The odds are very strong that as incompetent as they are in Washington, they’ll postpone the tax increases and spending cuts that are pre-scheduled for the end of the year, and although there is a contraction in Europe that is hurting U.S. exports and showing up in the earnings of many companies, that it’s not big enough to cause a recession here, or have a serious impact,” said Johnson. The benchmark indexes rose for a third session, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.39%  climbing as many as 98 points, and lately up 61.15 points, or 0.5%, at 13,178.6, with 21 of its 30 components rising.
Blue-chip decliners included Pfizer Inc. PFE -2.12%  and Johnson & Johnson JNJ -0.84% , which halted most efforts at devising an Alzheimer’s drug following a second drug-trial failure. The S&P 500 index SPX +0.51%  added 8.22 points, or 0.6%, to 1,402.45, with energy pacing gains that had the index surpassing 1,400 for the first time since early May.A close above 1,405 would be notable, given that’s where the index closed on May 1, and “we haven’t been there since,” said Randy Frederick, managing director of active trading and derivatives at Charles Schwab.“If we close above 1,405, then we’re going to head higher and take out the yearly closing high of 1,419,” he added.

Federal Reserve Bank of Boston President Eric Rosengren said in an interview that the Fed should purchase more bonds. On Monday, a spokesperson for German Chancellor Angela Merkel voiced support for a European Central Bank bond-purchasing plan. “I’m shocked that this market has continued to push higher after the huge move we had last week. It could be this final statement by [ECB President Mario] Draghi. The immediate reaction was subdued, and it took time for people to digest, but it takes out prospects of a calamity,” said Frederick at Charles Schwab.“Our Fed is in a holding pattern,” said Frederick, who said he believes Friday’s nonfarm-payrolls report lessened chances of a third round of quantitative easing by the Fed, at least in the near term.On Tuesday, the Labor Department reported job openings in June rose to a four-year high, signaling hiring could pick up in the latter half of the year.“But Bernanke, like Draghi, has said, ‘We’re only going to let things deteriorate so far before we step in.’ So we’re in a sideways holding pattern, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing for the market,” Frederick said.
