http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 1,779 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings in both cases as of 8/17/12.

A read of the print editions of Friday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 13,057.46 down 115.3 or 0.88% from Wednesday's close of 13,172.76. For the year the Dow is up 6.87%. Of the 30 Dow components only Kraft and Pfizer gained and 28 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Kraft up 26.5 cents or 0.65%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise   was Boeing down $2.44 and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard down 8.15%.

WSJ pC4 "HP helps drag down blue chips" by Matt Jarzemsky says bluce chip shares fell the most in nearly 5 week as doubts re: more monetary stimulus crept into the market & as Hewlett-Packard slumped after giving a cautious outlook.  Hewlett-Packard is charted under Bad News.

Fin times p20 "Big Lots left battered as caution over economic outlook lingers" by Anora Mahnudova says the braoder market closed lower Thurs after an unexpected rise in initial jobless claims last week.  HP shares dropped 8.1% after it announced a $8.9 bil 2Q loss and narrowed its full year outlook.  Intel dropped 2.7%.  JPMorgan lost 1.6%.

NYT pB5 "With Fed help in doubt, shares dip" by AP says the stock market fell on Thurs after some doubts emerged over whether the Fed was ready to take further steps to stimulate the economy.

Inv. Bus. Daily pB2 "Stocks retreat moderately but vol also declines" by Paul Whitfield says Thursday's action was down in lower vol as the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

USAT p4B "S&P slips lower on uncertainty about Europe" by Bloomberg says the S&P suffered its biggest decline in a month amid concern European leaders aren't making progress in solving the region's debt crisis.

As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.12914682. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.49 up from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.95 (year ago it was 12.44); today's P/E estimate is 12.64 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 12.64 (year ago it was 11.11) and today's dividend yield is 2.61 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.55 (last year it was 2.74). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,686.32 down 14.9 from  Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,701.22. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.12914682) you get the decrease in today's Dow .Each dollar increase in the Dow increases the Dow Jones Industrial Averageby 7.74.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.40 down $3.31 cents from Wednesday's average closing price of $56.71. The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.40 (HD/DD) down 32 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $53.72 (HD/DD). The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,490 ($170,122 - 168,632).

MarketWatch.com Thurs. 4: 24 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks
finished sharply lower Thursday, with all three indexes taking their hardest hit in more than a month, after Federal Bank of St. Louis President James Bullard played down thinking that a third round of quantitative easing is on the way. Bullard's comments to CNBC is "what has caused today's market swoon," said Kim Forrest, equity analyst at Fort Pitt Capital Group Inc. Down for a fourth session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.88% fell 115.3 points, or 0.9%, to 13,057.46. The S&P 500 index SPX -0.81% declined 11.41 points, or 0.8%, to 1,402.08. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.66% shed 20.27 points, or 0.7%, to 3,053.4.
