http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 1,814 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of   Friday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, the New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga.- carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 13,539.86 up 206.51 or 1.55% from Wednesday's close of 13,333.35.  For the year the Dow is up 10.82%.  Of the 30 Dow components  all 30 gained and 0 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise  was IBM up $2.59 and percentage-wise was  Bank of America up 4.79%.

WSJ pC1 "Afgter Fed, yield moves to the fore" by Tom Lauricella says the Fed's move to prop up the economy with a new round of bond purchases promises to add more fuel to the fire driving one of the most powerful trends in fin'l markets: the search for ever scarcer yield.  The Fed said it would buy $40 bil of mortgages backed securities each month, driving down yields of those bonds.

IBD pB2 "Stocks, volume pick up as Fed turns to QE again" by Paul Whitfield says stocks rode the Fed's QE3 announcement to good gains Thurs as vol picked up from Wed's pacee.  Current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

Fin Times p22 "Bank of America makes strong gains as fin'ls given impetus" by Arash massoudi says Bank of America led stocks of some big banks as the Fed said it would take add'l measures to stimulate the economy.  JPMorgan gained 3.7%.

NYT pB1 "Fed action spurs broad rally; S&P rises 1.6%" by Nathaniel Popper says the Fed's new effort to bolster the economy & support the housing amrket was greeted enthusiastically but mortgage experts were doubting whether the benefits would be passed along to homeowners.

As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.12914682. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 15.00 up from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.77 (year ago it was 12.75); today's P/E estimate is 12.55 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 12.55 (year ago it was 11.50) and today's dividend yield is 2.54 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.57 (last year it was 2.69). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,799.65 up 77.70  from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,721.95. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.12914682) you get the increase in today's Dow .Each dollar increase or decrease in the Dow increases or decreases the Dow Jones Industrial Average by 7.74.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $59.99 up $2.59  from Wednesday's average closing price of $57.40. The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.45 (HD/DIS) up $1.13 from Wednesday's median closing price of $54.32 (HD/DIS). The lowest volume was travelers  and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If  Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $7,770 ($179,964 - $172,195).

MarketWatch.com 9/13/12 Thurs. pm 4:55 pm by Kate Gibson says
U.S. stocks leapt Thursday, lifting the S&P 500 to its highest finish since 2007, after the Federal Reserve opted for a third round of quantitative easing to boost economic growth. They came in with the big bazooka,” said Nick Raich, director of research at Key Private Bank in Cleveland. The central bank said it would purchase $40 billion of mortgage-backed securities every month until the labor market improves. The Federal Open Market Committee also said it would likely keep the federal funds rate near zero through at least the middle of 2015. “Bank of America BAC -0.21%   and Wells Fargo WFC +3.55%   should be beneficiaries of this,” said Raich of the lenders and Thursday’s top two risers on the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +1.55%  , which rose more than 239 points before ending at 13,539.86, up 206.51 points, or 1.6%. That was the index’s highest close since Dec. 26, 2007.
The S&P 500 Index SPX +1.63%  gained 23.43 points, or 1.6%, to 1,459.99, with financials pacing gains that included all 10 of the index’s major sectors.“The equity market sees QE3 as a positive thing and bids are being raised in the areas that are most likely to benefit like construction, housing and consumer staples,” wrote Kevin Giddis, a fixed-income analyst at Morgan Keegan & Co., in emailed research.
The Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.33%  added 41.52 points, or 1.3%, to 3,155.83, with iPhone maker Apple Inc. AAPL +0.02%   closing at a record high of $682.98 a share. Read more on tech stocks.
For every stock that fell four gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where 802 million shares traded. Composite volume of 4.5 billion was the highest in more than three months.
With the Fed announcing further stimulus and protests in the Middle East and Africa sparking concern of supply disruption, oil futures CLV2 +1.08%   rose $1.30, or 1.3%, to end at $98.31 a barrel, a four-month high, on the New York Mercantile Exchange.WSJ's Paul Vigna joins Simon to review market reaction to the Fed's revised economic outlook and its decision to initiate a new round of bond buying. The dollar DXY -0.56%   fell against global currencies including the euro EURUSD -0.0107%  .
“Bernanke is still concerned about deflationary forces out of Europe. And as the dollar gets weaker and the euro gets stronger, guess who gets stronger in the global marketplace? U.S. goods are now cheaper to folks in Asia,” said Raich at Key Private Bank.Gold futures GCZ2 +2.08%  climbed 2.2% to end at $1,772.10 an ounce. Treasury prices were mixed, with the yield on the 10-year note 10_YEAR -2.10%  falling to 1.724%.“Short rates were not expected to move, and they haven’t,” said Giddis at Morgan Keegan & Co.Market expectations for a third round of bond buying were raised after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke last month called the weak labor market a grave concern.
“The downside comes later, in the form of inflationary pressures and getting out of this at some point in time. The key focus is commodities, which usually respond to QE with price increases,” Savage said.
A separate government report had wholesale prices rising 1.7% in August, illustrating the rise in energy costs.
