http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 1,819 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of Wednesday's  Wall St. Journal, Financial Times,  Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal Constitution &amp &  Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 13,564.64 up 11.54 or 0.09% from Monday's close of 13,553.1.  For the year the Dow is up 11.03%. Of the Dow components 13 gained (not including United Health which was up)   and 17 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was  Caterpillar up $1.08 and percentage-wise was Kraft up 1.83 %. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was  United Technologies down 67 cents and percentage-wise was Alcoa down 0.94%.

WSJ  pC4 "Blue chips rise 11.54 as FedEx hits brakes" by Chris Dieterich says the Dow rebounded to eke out a narrow gain, though most stocks finished lower as investors digested a downbeat earnings forecast from FedEx. Consumer staples sector did best with Kraft up 72 cents.

IBD pB4 "NYSE sees distributiona s a few leaders stumble" by Victor Reklaitis says the main indexes stepped back moderately Tues for a 2nd straight session as a few leading stocks struggled.  The current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

Fin Times p24  "Nervous investros start to tune out from netflix amid cost concerns" by Arash massoudi says US equities slipped from multiyear highs as investors weighed the likelihood that the recent run up in stocks would last after the Fed's latest intervention.  Fin'l sector stocks were 1.1% lower as Bank of America fell 2.6% and JPMorgan was down 0.9%.  Boeing lost 1.9%.  Telecomm did well as AT&T gained 0.9%.

NYT pB3 "Oil and FedEx's forecasat weigh down markets" by Reuters says stocks ended flat to slightly lower on Tues after the economic bellwether FedEx cut its profit forecast.

As of the open of the market on Wedneesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.12914682. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 15.02 up from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 15.01 (year ago it was 12.73); today's P/E estimate is 12.95 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 12.95 (year ago it was 11.52) and today's dividend yield is 2.53 unchanged from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.53 (last year it was 2.69). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,751.82 up 1.49  from Monday's closing numerator of 1,750.33. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.12914682) you get the increase in today's Dow. Each dollar increase or decrease in the Dow increases or decreases the Dow Jones Industrial Average by 7.74.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $58.39 up 5 cents from Monday's average closing price of $58.34. The median closing price of  today's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.38 (HD/DIS) down 15 cents from yesterday's median closing price of $55.53 (HD/DIS). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $149 ($175,182 - $175,033).

MarketWatch.com 9/18/12 Tues. pm 3:02 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks on Tuesday slipped for a second day as a gauge of builders’s sentiment showed improvement in September and shipper FedEx Corp. reduced its profit forecast.“The rally is a bit overheated at this point, there’s a growing disconnect in terms of what the market is doing and what the underlying economy is doing. Most recently, FedEx is reiterating that point for us, cutting its global outlook for the economy,” said Dave Abate, senior wealth advisor at Strategic Wealth Partners in Seven Hills, Ohio.Given the market’s extended run, it’s no surprise that investors are now opting to “consolidate some of these gains,” said Bruce Bittles, chief investment strategist at RW Baird & Co.A retreat is likely to be mild, possibly back to 1,400 or so on the S&P 500 index SPX -0.13% , he said. On Tuesday, the S&P 500 index shed 3.74 points to 1,457.45, with energy hardest hit and consumer staples the best performer of its 10 major sectors.“Most of the market is in gear technically, the small cap and even the mid-cap that were lagging a month ago have now caught up with the Dow industrials and S&P 500,” said Bittles.Small stocks as measured by the Russell 2000 RUT -0.23% recently broke through their March high, as did the S&P 500 Mid-Cap 400 index MID -0.63%
Investors have recently shifted from defensive sectors, including utilities and health care, into aggressive industry groups like energy, technology and materials, Bittles added. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.09%  lost 6.42 points to 13,546.68.The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.03%  declined 5.11 points to 3,173.56.FedEx is hoping for a "surge volume event" as Apple prepares for sales of its new iPhone 5 this week, shipping them as fast as it can by air from factories in China. For every two stocks rising three declined on the New York Stock Exchange, where 349 million shares traded as of 2:45 p.m. Eastern. Composite volume surpassed 2.3 billion. On the New York Mercantile Exchange, the price of oil CLV2 -1.23%   fell for a second session, losing $1.33 to end at $95.29 a barrel. Apple Inc. AAPL +0.30%  shares hit $700 for the first time a day after the consumer-technology company said orders for its iPhone 5 exceeded 2 million in the first 24 hours.FedEx FDX -3.06%  shares dropped 2.5% after the package-delivery company lowered its anticipated earnings for its fiscal year, citing the softening global economy. The National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo housing-market index gained 3 points to a seasonally-adjusted reading of 40 in September, the highest the index has been since June 2006. “Housing continues to see improvement, with the Fed again trying to give it a further kick in the pants, but the pace and sustainability will still be uneven,” noted Peter Boockvar, an equity strategist at Miller Tabak. The Commerce Department reported the current-account deficit shrank more than expected in the second quarter, aided by increased exports. In a speech prepared for delivery Tuesday in Michigan, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago President Charles Evans said the Fed’s latest round of quantitative easing would help shield the U.S. recovery from Europe’s debt crisis and possible U.S. tax hikes and spending reductions.
