11/5/12 Mon. pm Dow Closes at 13,112.44 up 19.28 or 0.15%

 The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 13,112.44 up 19.28 or 0.15%  from Friday's close of 13,093.16.  Of the Dow components  17 gained and   13 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise   was IBM up $1.18   and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard up 1.85%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was UnitedHealth down 74 cents or 1.32%.

As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page  C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.31 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.30 (year ago it was 12.89); Monday's P/E estimate is 12.37 unchanged from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.35 (year ago it was 12.35) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.59 unchanged from Friday's dividend yield of 2.59 (last year it was 2.59). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,708.75 up 3.81 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,704.94. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the increase in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.96 up 13 cents from Friday's average of $56.83. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.83     (DIS/UNH) down 14 cents from Friday's median closing price of 52.97. The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Monay morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $381   ($170,875 - $170,494).

11/5/12 Mon. 4:09  MarketWatch by Polya Lesova  says U.S. stocks ended with modest gains on Monday, with investors reluctant to make major moves ahead of the U.S. presidential election. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.15% rose 19.28 points, or 0.2%, to 13,112.44. The S&P 500 index SPX +0.22% gained 3.06 points, or 0.2%, to 1,417.26 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.59% advanced 17.53 points, or 0.6%, to 2,999.66.

A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's &  Investor's Business Daily,   Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution &amp Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 13,093.16 down 139.46 or 1.05%  from Thursday's close of 13,232.62. For the week the Dow down 14.05 or 0.1% from last Friday's close of 13,107.21. For the year the Dow is up 7.17%.  Of the Dow components  6 gained and   24 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise      and percentage-wise was Bank of America up 12 cents or 1.23%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM down $3.64 and percentage-wise was Chevron down 2.69%.

IBD pB8 "Stocks give back gains; correction still in place" by Paul Whitfield says stocks opened mixed Fri & then headed south, erasing most of the prior day's gains. Friday's action was down in lower volume.

Sat WSJ pB5 "Dow Industrials tumble 139 points" by Tomi Kilgore et al says US stocks closed broadly lower with blue chips falling into negative territory for the week in the last half hour of trading as a biggger than expected increase in Oct payrolls was offset by sharp declines in materials & energy shares.  


Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,704.94 down 18.16 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,723.10. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the decrease in today's Dow. 11/2/12 Fri. 4:08  MarketWatch by Deborah Levine  says U.S. stocks ended lower on Friday, after an initial cheer for better-than-expected U.S. employment data quickly turned to setting up for the presidential election coming in a few days. The S&P 500 Index /SPX -0.94% fell 13.39 points, or 0.9% to 1,414.20. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -1.05% dropped 139.46 points, or 1.1%, to 13,093.16. For the week, the S&P 500 index pared gains to 0.2% and the Dow industrials turned down 0.1%. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -1.26% lost 37.93 points, or 1.3%, to 2,982.13. It's off 0.2% from a week ago.

WSJ pC4 "A week in the life of the DJIA" ranks all the Dow 30 based on last week's action with  Bank of America being the week's best performer up 73 cents or 8% while the worst performer was Pfizer down 88 cents or 3.46%.
