11/30/12 Fri. am Cisco Bids $141 Mil for Cariden

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 1,925 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 11/2/12 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 11/2/12.

A read of the print editions of  Friday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today & Washington Post yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 13,021.82 up 36.71 or 0.28% from Wednesday's close of 12,985.11. For the year the Dow is up 6.6$. Of the Dow components, 21 gained, Alcoa was unchanged and 8 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was UnitedHealth up $1.36 or 3.05%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Home Depot down 59 cents and percentage-wise was Intel down 2.79%.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks find footing after midday whipping" by Alexandra Scaggs et al says a rise in telecom & healh care shares helped stocks settle higher after major indexes were whipped around by fiscal cliff worries.

NYT pB8 "Economic reports help shares gain ground" by AP says stocks rose Thurs after ainvestors recovered from pessimistic reports on fed budget talks & were cheered by reports on economic growth & unemployment claims.

Fin times p24  "Kohl's takes a knock as nov same store sales fail to impress' by Anora Mahmudova says US equity markets had volatile trading as investors reacted to news that Tim Geithner held a 1st round of unsuccessful talks with the Republican leader in theh House over the the looming fiscal cliff.

IBD pB2 "Stocks push ahead, shrug off disappointing news" by Pual Whitfield says stocks advanced Thurs as the indexes shrugged off mostly lackluster data & stalled fiscal cliff talks in DC.  Thursday's acion saw higher volume and the market was up as the current outlook is sill a confirmed uptrend.

As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.49 up from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.45 (year ago it was 13.00); today's P/E estimate is 12.10 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 12.10 (year ago it was 11.55) and today's dividend yield is 2.68 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.67 (last year it was 2.62). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,695.65 up 4.78 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,690.87. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the increase in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.51 up 15 cents from Wednesday's average of $56.36. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.04 (DIS/UNH) up $1.09 from Wednesday's median closing price of $50.95. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $478 ($169,565 - $169,087).

11/29/12 Thurs. 4:32 pm MarketWatch by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks on Thursday rose for a second day, lifting the Dow industrials into positive terrain for the week, as investors bet on at least a short-term fix to avert the so-called fiscal cliff. “I’m still expecting a deal. On the tax side, 98% of Americans will get to keep their Bush tax cuts on a permanent basis. Both sides of the partisan divide agree that this should happen. That’s actually a very big deal and very good for the economy,” Ed Yardeni, chief investment strategist at Yardeni Research Inc., wrote in a research note. “The Democrats want to raise the top two tax rates, which apply to the top 2% of Americans earning $250,000 or more. The Republicans oppose doing so. Nevertheless, an outline of a compromise is taking shape,” said Yardeni. The indexes came off their highs after House Speaker John Boehner declared that “no substantive progress” had been made in talks to reach a budget deal. “The market has been doing a good job of jumping on almost every remark out of Washington and overshooting,” Elliot Spar, market strategist at Stifel Nicolaus, remarked in afternoon commentary. After a 77-point rise, the Dow Jones Industrial Average /quotes/zigman/627449 DJIA +0.28% dipped 23 points as Boehner spoke, but finished up 36.71 points, or 0.3%, to 13,021.82, leaving it up 0.1% for the week, with one session remaining. Walt Disney Co. DIS +1.06% shares climbed after the entertainment company and Dow component hiked its dividend. The S&P 500 Index SPX +0.43% rose 6.02 points, or 0.4%, to 1,415.95, with materials and health care pacing the gains among its 10 major sectors. “The S&P traded within 3 points of its 200-day moving average at 1,423 and then along comes Boehner. He has gone from optimistic to disappointed in about 24 hours,” said Spar. Addressing a televised news conference, the Ohio Republican said Democrats were “not serious” about spending cuts. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP +0.68% gained 20.25 points, or 0.7%, to 3,012.03. For every two stock falling more than two rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where 662 million shares traded. Composite volume surpassed 3.3 billion. The move into riskier assets weakened the U.S. dollarDXY 0.00% and Treasurys, with commodity prices including oil CLF3 -0.56% and gold /quotes/zigman/699338 GCZ2 -0.05% rising.Obama followed up on his election-victory statement that he looked forward to “sitting down with” Mitt Romney by having lunch with the Republican he beat to win a second term. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and another senior White House aide visited Capitol Hill for talks with congressional leaders on averting automatic spending cuts and tax hikes set to begin in 2013. Thursday’s economic reports drew little response from investors, who lately have bypassed any data in favor of paying attention solely to developments related to the budget talks. The session’s U.S. economic reports included the National Association of Realtors saying pending home sales rose 5.2% in October, illustrating ongoing recovery in the housing market. Read more about pending home sales. America’s economy expanded more than initially projected in the third quarter, the Commerce Department reported, with the nation’s economic growth rising to 2.7% in the period — up from an initial estimate of 2% but just under estimates calling for a 2.8% rise.Separately, the Labor Department said claims for unemployment benefits declined by 23,000 to 393,000 last week, with the decline not as much as expected.
