Post No. 2,235  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

 The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 14758.32  down  353.87 or 2.34%  from Wednesday's close of 15112.19. Of the Dow components all 30  declined.    The biggest decliner dollar-wise was 3M down $2.80  and percentage-wise was Disney down 3.67%.


As of the open of the market on   Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.51 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.74 (last year it was 14.13); today's P/E estimate is 13.62 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 13.62 (year ago it was 12.05) and today's dividend yield is 2.41 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.3840 (last year it was 2.60). The Dow's all-time high was 15,409.39 on May 28, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1921.77  down 46.08  from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1967.85. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $64.06 down $1.53 cents from Wednesday's average of $65.59. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $62.89   (DIS/UNH) down $1.41 from Wednesday's median closing price of $64.30. The lowest volume was TRV  and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost   $4,608 ($196,785 - $192,177 ).

Thursday MarketWatch 4:10 by Polya Lesova says U.S. stocks ended with steep losses on Thursday, hit by fear that the U.S. Federal Reserve will start scaling back its bond-buying program later this year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -2.34% tumbled 353.87 points, or 2.3%, to 14,758.32. In percentage terms, it was the Dow's worst day since Nov. 7, 2012, the day after the U.S. presidential election. The S&P 500 index SPX -2.50% fell 40.73 points, or 2.5%, to 1,588.19, its worst day since November 2011. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -2.28% declined 78.57 points, or 2.3%, to 3,364.63. The CBOE Market Volatility Index VIX +23.14% rose 22.3% to 20.35 Thursday.

Dow Jones Industrial Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 15112.19 down  0.91% from Tuesday's close of 15318.23. For the year the Dow is up 15.32%. Of the Dow components all 30  declined.   The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM down $2.93  and percentage-wise was down 2.54%.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1967.85 down 26.83  from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1994.68. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. The lowest volume was TRV  and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost   $2,683 ($199,467 - $196,785 ).

Wednesday MarketWatch 4:03 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks  fell sharply and Treasury yields surged as Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the central bank may scale back its bond purchases depending on the economic outlook. "The market was looking for some kind of commitment of no tapering, and he (Bernanke) is saying the labor market is improving," said Joe Heider, principal at Rehmann Financial in Westlake, Ohio. Extending its streak of triple-digit moves into a seventh session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -1.35% fell 206.04 points, or 1.4%, at 15,112.19. The S&P 500 indexSPX -1.39% lost 22.88 points, or 1.4%, to 1,628.93. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -1.12% declined 38.98 points, or 1.1%, to 3,443.20. The 10-year note yield rose to 2.33%, its highest since March 2012.
