http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,246  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of Thursday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 14910.14 up 149.83 or 1.02% from Tuesday's close of 14760.31. For the year the Dow is up 13.78%. Of the Dow components 27 gained and 3 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Boeing up $2.06 or 2.09%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Caterpillar down 23 cents and percentage-wise was Alcoa down 2.15%.

NYT pB9 "Major indexes post a second day of gains" by AP s& AJC pA15 "Stocks focus on the positive" by AP says stocks indexes rose for a 2nd day Wed.  It was the first 2 day stretch of gains since the Fed gave a timetable for pulling back its economic stimulus a week ago.  News that the economy grew at a much slower annual rate didn't dampen the buying.

FT p22 "S&P 500 consolidates gains with yahoo & Google buoying echs" by Jason Abbruzzese, Arash Massoudi says US stocks moved higher for the 2nd day in a row as Yahoo & other tech stocks helped US idnices rebound from selling triggered by last week's announcement from the Fed.  Beoing was among the highest risers on the Dow up 2.1% as its shares have risen 33.7% in '13 shaking off battery problems with its new 787 and seeing solid sales of its comm'l aircraft.

IBD pB2 "IBD 50 rallies 1.4% amid mild volume market rally" by David Saito-Chung says bulls grabbed congtrol of the market for a 2nd straight session Wed but vol fell, further muddying the current outlook for stocks which is marke in correction.

As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C_   of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.__    from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.05 (last year it was 13.81); today's P/E estimate is 13.35 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 13.35 (year ago it was 12.15) and today's dividend yield is 2.4_   from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.47 (last year it was 2.67). The Dow's all-time high was 15,409.39 on May 28, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1941.54 up  19.51 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1922.03. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $64.72 up 65 cents from Tuesday's average of $64.07. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $64.00 (DIS/UNH) up 65cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $63.35. The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,951 ($194,154 -$192,203).

Wednesday MarketWatch 4:18 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks jumped Wednesday, pulling benchmark indexes into positive terrain for the week, as a revision in economic growth calmed concern about U.S. monetary policy.Gross domestic product expanded 1.8% from January through March, down from an earlier estimate of 2.4%, the Commerce Department reported.“The downward revision makes some investors feel that perhaps tapering isn’t as imminent as it appeared last week,” said Stuart Freeman, chief equity strategist at Wells Fargo Advisors, referring to market concerns that the Federal Reserve might scale back its $85 billion in monthly bond purchases sooner rather than later.“That’s speculation, because if the Fed is seeing more growth ahead, it may not have been a surprise to them that it was a downward revision,” added Freeman.Speaking on Bloomberg television Wednesday, Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond President Jeffrey Lacker called the 1.8% GDP figure consistent with his outlook, and said the central bank was not anywhere near to making cuts in its balance sheet.Making its 14th triple-digit move out of 18 sessions in June, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +1.02%  jumped as much as 178 points, and finished with a gain of 149.83 points, or 1%, at 14,910.14, with Boeing Co. BA +2.11%  pacing gains that included all but three of the Dow’s 30 components. The S&P 500 SPX +0.96%  climbed 15.23 points, or 1%, to 1,603.26, with health care and utilities leading the gains among its 10 major industry groups. The gains come on “continued momentum from markets, having been really battered over the last five days or so,” said Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott. The S&P 500 remains roughly 70 points below “where we peaked in late May,” said Luschini of the 1,669 close on May 21, a day before Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said the Fed could begin reducing its monetary easing later this year so long as the economy is strong enough. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.85%  added 28.34 points, or 0.9%, to 3,376.22.For every stock falling, more than three gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where nearly 745 million shares traded. Composite volume approached 3.5 billion.Gold futures for August delivery GCQ3 -3.91%  fell $45.20, or 3.6%, to $1,229.80 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange.Gold offers “no cash flow and no dividends,” said Freeman, who added that a rising dollar and interest rates also present a bearish case for the metal.“On Feb. 15, we advocated stepping out of gold at $1,600 an ounce,” said Luschini, who argued that the commodity now has a cost to carry, given there are positive real interest rates being offered in the bond market.
