7/28/13 Sun/Sat ExxonMobil Repots Results on Thursday

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,298  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of  Monday's Barron's & Investor's Business Daily, the combined Sat/Sun issues of the Wall St. Journal &   Financial Times; & Sunday's & Saturday's  New York Times,  & Atlanta Journal & amp; amp; Constitution   yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:   The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 15558.63 up 3.22 or 0.02%  from Thursday's close of 15555.61. For the week the Dow was up 15.09 or 0.1% from last Friday's close of 15,543.74. For the year the Dow is up18.73 %.  Of the Dow components  17   gained and 13 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Travelers up 75 cents or 0.91% .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise  was  and percentage-wise was American Express down $1.10 or 1.03%.

Sat. WSJ pB5 "Stocks end flat for week" by Matt Jarzemsky says US stocks inched higher to end the week virtually unchanged as investors digested earnings reports & prepared for a busy economic calendar int he coming week.

IBD pB8 "Stocks up in quiet trade, but Starbucks leaps 8%" by Paul Whitfield says stocks killed time Fri with the indexes up slightly & vol down sharply from the previous session.  Friday's action was up in lower volume and the current outlook is confirmed uptrend.

Sat. NYT pB6 "Wall St closes with small gains after early losses" by AP says a mixed batch of earnings results gave investors little direction on Fri as traders began looking ahead to a packed schedule next week.

FT p11 "Robust sales lift Starbucks as earnings weigh on S&P" by Jason Abbruzzese says earnings were still in focus Fri as the S&P finished the day nearly unchanged.  Caterpillar declined 4.2% on concerns about the global economy & the firm cut its full year guidance.  AT&T fell 0.6% as it reported net income that missed expectations and customer growth that  lagged behind Verizon.

As of the close  of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6   of   Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Friday's  closing trailing P/E ratio is  16.70 down   from Friday's   opening trailing P/E ratio of 16.79  (last year it was 14.83);  Friday's   closing P/E estimate is  13.90 up   from Friday's   opening P/E estimate of 13.55  (year ago it was 12.45) and Friday's   closing dividend yield is 2.36 unchanged   from Friday's opening  dividend yield of 2.36  (last year it was 2.57). The Dow's all-time high was 15,567.74  on July  23, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2026.01 up 0.42 from Thursday's losing numerator of 2025.59. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $67.53 up 1  cent    from Thursday's average of $67.52.  The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $68.60   (DIS/UNH) up 1 cent  from Thursday's median closing price of $68.59. The lowest volume was Travelers  and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $42    ($202,601 - $202,559).

MarketWatch 7/26/13 Fri. 4:27  pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks finished with slight gains on Friday, lifting the Dow industrials to a fifth weekly gain, after Wall Street dug through earnings reports that included a steep profit drop for Expedia Inc. and a better-than-expected profit from Starbucks Corp.  “If you want to pick a good and a bad, Expedia  and Starbucks  are the ones you want to look at,” said Art Hogan, market strategist at Lazard Capital Markets. “The very last thing people want to give up is a cup of coffee,” he added, noting Dunkin Brands Group Inc. , the parent of Dunkin’ Donuts, also reported positive results earlier in the week. Leading gains on the S&P 500, Starbucks rose 7.6% after reporting a quarterly profit that topped expectations.Leading losses on the S&P 500, Expedia  fell 27% a day after it said second-quarter profit fell by a third.“The online travel world is not looking altogether robust; Expedia wasn’t able to transition well last quarter,” said Lazard’s Hogan.A favorable reading on consumer sentiment did little to bolster stocks. The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan’s index of U.S. consumer sentiment rose to 85.1 this month from 84.1 in June. The latest level is the highest since July 2007.After a 150-point drop, the Dow Jones Industrial Average  added 3.22 points to 15,558.83, giving the blue-chip index a 0.1% weekly gain, its fifth straight. The Dow is up almost 19% this year.Down a fraction from last Friday’s finish, the S&P 500 index added 1.40 points on Friday, or 0.1%, to 1,691.65, with health care pacing gains and materials leading losses among its 10 major industry groups. The index is up nearly 19% for the year. “For us to take a pause here in the middle of the earnings season is completely understandable,” said Hogan. The Nasdaq Composite  added 7.98 points on Friday, or 0.2%, to 3,613.16, leaving it up 0.7% from the week-ago close and up nearly 20% year-to-date. Decliners remained just ahead of advancers on the New York Stock Exchange, where 597 million shares traded.Composite volume approached 2.7 billion. The dollar  declined against other global currencies and the yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell a basis point to 2.562%. Settling at a more-than two-week low and down 2.9% for the week, crude-oil futures  slid 79 cents, or 0.8%, to $104.70 a barrel.Gold futures lost $7.30, or 0.6%, to $1,321.50 an ounce, leaving them up 2.2% for the week.Nasdaq Composite component Zynga Inc.  fell 14% after projecting earnings shy of estimates. “We’ve had a significant shift week over week. Last week earnings were third behind [Federal Reserve Chairman] Ben Bernanke and economic data. This week it’s all about earnings,” Hogan added.“The earnings season thus far has been good enough, but when companies miss, they are treated on a case-by-case basis,” said Hogan. The flood of earnings this week has dominated investor attention. The read on corporate reports, however, has been far from conclusive.“It’s hard to get charged up about the latest earnings season for the S&P 500,” Ed Yardeni, chief investment strategist at Yardeni Research Inc., noted in weekly comments delivered Friday.Nick Raich, CEO at the Earnings Scout, had a brighter take. “Clearly, earnings growth this quarter has been driven by the financial sector, but even if you exclude financial-company results, 63% are still beating earnings estimates on average sales growth of 4%,” said Raich in emailed commentary.Of the roughly 100 companies to watch only a few “garnered the most attention. Neutral-rated Facebook surged 30% after suddenly figuring out how to monetize mobile while home builders had a rough go of it,” Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist, BTIG LLC, said of Thursday’s trade. On Thursday, the Nasdaq Composite was propelled by a leap in Facebook Inc.’s  shares after the social-networking company reported better-than-estimated results. Home builders, however, were hit, as top executives spoke of higher interest rates crimping sales.
