Tuesday MarketWatch 4:19 by   Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks climbed on Tuesday, pushing the S&P 500 to within 1% of its all-time closing high, as Wall Street embraced an improving economy and higher interest rates.“The market is voting itself that things are improving, with interest rates going higher without taking the stock market down,” said JJ Kinahan, chief strategist with TD Ameritrade.
The S&P 500 index SPX +0.72%  added 11.86 points, or 0.7%, to 1,652.32, with materials pacing sector gains.Kroger agreed to acquire grocery chain Harris Teeter for $2.44 billion, its largest deal in nearly 15 years, as the supermarket owner expands further in the southeastern U.S. Annie Gasparro joins MoneyBeat. “From a technical point of view we need to test 1,650 to go higher,” Kinahan added of the level last breached three weeks ago.The market can now make a run for the May 21 record close of 1,669.16, he added. The benchmark indexes ran up to three-week highs as Alcoa Inc. AA -0.13%  started off earnings season, with the aluminum manufacturer the first Dow member to report earnings for the second quarter.“Alcoa has become a little like the ceremonial first pitch of a baseball game; we’re waiting for later this week for J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. JPM +0.35%  and Wells Fargo & Co. WFC -0.30%  to really start the game,” said Kinahan of the banking powerhouses slated to report at the end of the week.Comments from Alcoa’s CEO playing down worry about the impact of a Chinese slowdown on the company’s bottom line did cheer the market, Kinahan said.

The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Intel down 87 cents or 3.64%.

WSJ pC4 "Resilience is the key as stocks gain anew" by Alexandra Scaggs says stocks extended their winning streak to 3 sessions due to more confidence in the market and the view that the market could withstand a scaling back of Fed easing efforts. Intel is charted under Bad News as it dropped 88 cents after a pair of analysts expressed caution on the stock and one downgraded it.

IBD pB2 "Stocks extend win streak; weak chips drag Nasdaq" by Vincent Mao says stocks rose for a 3rd straight session just as the Q2 earnings season got under way after the close.  Evercore Partners downgraded Intel to underweight from equal weight.  JPMorgan and Wells report quarterly results Fri.

NYT pB8 "Investors'; wary optimism leads to gains for stocks" by AP says the stock market rose Mon with investors seeming cautiously optimistic about corp earnings.  After the market closed Alcoa reported a $119 mil loss for 2Q although its results excluding onetime charges exceeded analysts' forecasts.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1982.50 up 11.57 from Friday's closing numerator of 1970.93. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $66.06 up 36 cents from Friday's average of $65.70.  The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $66.14   (DIS/UNH) up $1.14 from Friday's median closing price of $65. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made  $1,157 ($198,250 -  $197,093).

Monday MarketWatch 4:22 by   Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks gained for a third session on Monday as Wall Street looked to the second-quarter earnings season. Alcoa Inc. shares  AA +1.41%  rose 1.4%. The aluminum producer and Dow component released its quarterly results after the market close. “The early indication is that the rate of change to downward earnings-per-share guidance after companies report second-quarter earnings will be less severe than in prior quarters,” Nick Raich, CEO at the Earnings Scout, wrote in an email. He noted that even if estimate reductions come in only slightly more than expected, “there is a great chance both sales and earnings growth will reaccelerate during the second half of 2013.” And, while Alcoa’s earnings mark the start of earnings season, results from major U.S. banks could call the tune in the coming weeks. After climbing as much as 126 points, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.59%  ended up 88.85 points, or 0.6%, at 15,224.69, with UnitedHealth Group Inc. UNH +2.10%  leading the rise that included 28 of its 30 members. Chip maker Intel Corp.INTC -3.64%  led blue-chip decliners, with its shares down 3.6% following downgrades by a trio of analysts. The S&P 500 index SPX +0.53%  rose 8.57 points, or 0.5%, to 1,640.46, with utilities pacing gains and telecommunications leading losses among its 10 major sectors. “We continue to be stuck in the 1,600 to 1,650 range for the S&P 500. It’s a time to manage risk on individual stocks, especially as we approach earnings season,” noted Elliot Spar, market strategist at Stifel, Nicolaus & Co. After briefly erasing gains, the Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.16%  rose 5.45 points, or 0.2%, to end at 3,484.83. For every two shares in decline, three gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where nearly 907 million shares traded. Composite volume neared 3.4 billion. On the New York Mercantile Exchange, oil futures for August delivery CLQ3 -0.36%  broke a four-session streak of gains, falling eight cents to end at $103.14 a barrel, and gold futures for August delivery GCQ3 +1.84%  added $22.20, or 1.8%, to $1,234.9 an ounce. The dollar DXY -0.27%  gained against other currencies, and U.S. Treasury yields fell, with the benchmark 10-year-note yield 10_YEAR -3.96%  at 2.64%. The combination of a strong U.S. currency and low overseas growth will hurt the international component of earnings, according to David Kelly, chief global strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds. “As usual, however, the focus will be on surprises in current earnings and forward guidance for the rest of the year, both of which could be relatively positive,” Kelly added. The S&P 500 climbed 1.6% last week after better-than-expected economic reports curbed worry about a potential reduction in Federal Reserve stimulus. The central bank’s intentions could become more apparent when the Federal Open Market Committee releases minutes from its June meeting Wednesday. The June jobs report had employers adding more jobs than projected. Other reports showed jobless claims declining and the manufacturing sector improving. Dell Inc. shares DELL +3.11%  gained 3.1% after Institutional Shareholder Services Inc. urged approval of founder Michael Dell’s buyout proposal for the computer company. Shares of Priceline.com PCLN +3.91%  rose 3.9% after Morgan Stanley upgraded the stock to overweight. In Brussels Monday, European governments agreed to disburse $3.9 billion for Greece, hoping to purchase time in keeping another debt crisis at bay until after German elections are held in September.
