http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,478 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of Dec. 9, 2013  and a summary of Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of Dec. 9, 2013.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 15739.43 down 104.1 or 0.66% from  Wednesday's  close of 158543.53. Of  the Dow components  6   gained and 24  declined.   The biggest gainer dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Exxon up $1.10 or 1.17% .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Visa down $2.22  and percentage-wise was Coke down 2.29% .

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2450.88 down 16.21 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 2467.09. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

As of the open  of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6   of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Thursday's   trailing P/E ratio is  16.27 down from Wednesday's  trailing P/E of 16.40  (last year it was 14.76).  Thursday's   P/E estimate is  15.00 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 15.00   (year ago it was 12.52) and today's  dividend yield is  2.12 up from yesterday's  dividend yield of 2.11  (last year it was 2.66). The Dow's all-time high was 16,097.33 on November 27, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $81.70 down 54 cents from  Wednesday's average closing price of $82.24.  The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $78.51  (HD/WMT/) down   54 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $79.05.     (HD/WMT).  The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was Cisco.

If  Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,621   ($246,709 - $245,088).

MarketWatch 12/12/13 Thurs. 4:43 pm by Anora Mahmudova says  US stocks closed lower on Thursday after a choppy trade as investors weighed a mixed batch of economic data and how it would affect the Fed’s decision to alter policy in its rate-setting meeting next week. The S&P 500 SPX -0.38%  closed 7 points, or 0.4%, at 1,775, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.66%  closed 104 points, or 0.7%, to 15,739, its third consecutive drop. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.14%  closed below 4,000 level for the first time since November 25. The index, which traded in positive territory for much of the day closed down 5 points or 0.1% to 3,998.The S&P 500 has fallen for the third day in a row and retreated from its all-time high reached earlier this week, but analysts say this is more due to profit-taking, since the index has gained 25% year-to-date.Investors digested positive retail sales figures and higher-than-expected jobless claims. U.S. consumers were more confident with their spending in November.Weekly jobless claims, however, shot up to 368,000 from 300,000 the week before, and were higher than the consensus forecast of 325,000. Seasonal factors may have distorted the data, as the four-week moving average still indicates an improving labor market. In another economic news, business inventories rose more than expected.“Neither the jobless claims nor the retail sales will move the Fed’s current position on tapering,” said John Canally, investment strategist for LPL Financial. Tapering refers to reduction in the Federal Reserve’s bond-buying program, which the central bank will be deciding during it meeting next week. The wind down of the $85 billion-a-month bond purchasing program depends on the improvements in the economy, especially the unemployment rate.Europe’s stock markets have done well in 2013, but that’s not thanks to corporate earnings. Chip Cummins assesses whether the corporate sector will finally see a rise in profit growth, and its prospects for greater M&A and IPO activity in 2014.
“Markets have been focused on the timing and the slope of Fed bond-buying tapering and not on anything else, said Uri Landesman, president of Platinum Partners.“Not even on the news that the most accomplished and competent central banker Stanley Fisher is likely to join the Fed. So any good news is taken as a bad news, which is why we saw the selloffs after the budget deal was struck.”
“What is good for the economy is good for the markets generally, but that is not the case right now. With solid gains on the S&P 500 so far they have been wanting to sell anyway and will do so for the seemingly wrong reasons,” Landesman added.
  • The buzz: The market, by many measures, does appear to be on solid ground heading into 2014, but investors need a sobering splash in the face, says MarketWatch’s latest Need To Know column .
  • Today’s movers & shakers: Facebook Inc. FB -0.44%  rose 5% following news of the company’s inclusion in the S&P 500. Lululemon Athletica Inc. LULU +0.18% shares fell 11.6% after quarterly results showed earnings per share of 45 cents on net revenue of $379.9 million but warned of flat fourth-quarter sales, well below analysts expectations. The biggest gainer on the S&P 500 was Southwest Airlines Inc LUV +0.16% , rising 4.6% after Bank of America upgraded the stock to buy from neutral. Hilton Worldwide Holdings HLT +0.23%  rallied 7.5% on its first trading day. Procter & Gamble Company PG -2.05% and Cisco Systems Inc. CSCO +0.10% were the laggards on the Dow. Read more in the Movers & Shakers column.
  • Other markets: Gold futures fell sharply and crude oil edged higher. Stocks in Shanghai and Hong Kong closed lower, and so did the European stock.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 15843.53 down 129.6 or 0.81% from  Tuesday's  close of 15973.13. For the year the Dow is up 20.90%. Of  the Dow components    5 gained and 25  declined.   The biggest gainer dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Visa up $6.23 or 3.12% .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Nike down $2.38 or 3%% .

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2467.09 down 20.18 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 2487.27.

WSJ pC4 "Rethink on Fed hits Dow" by Alexandra Scaggs says stocks suffered their biggest loss in a month as traders rethought the potential imipact of the Fed pulling back on easing efforts which followed news of a bipartisan congressional budget agreement.

FT p23 "Wall Street" says Cisco fell 1.6% after Europe's 2nd highest court upheld a decision by EU regulators clearing Microsoft's $8.5 bil takeover of Skype in '11.  Citigroup started coverage on Cisco with a sell.

IBD pB2 "Sharp losses for market prompt shift in outlook" by Ken Shreve says Wed's action was broad based selling in higher volume while the current outlook has been changed to uptrend under pressure.

NYT pB9 "In a year of major gains, amrkets take a big tumble" by Reuters says the stock market posted its largest drop in more than a month on Wed as traders locked inr ecent gains as the end of the year approaches.

AJC pA21 "Weak earnings drag stocks" by AP says stocks sagged Wed due to weak earnings reports from several US firms.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $82.24 down 67 cents from  Tuesday's average closing price of $82.91.  The median closing price of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.05  (HD/WMT/) down    10 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $79.15.     (NKE/WMT).  The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was Cisco.

If  Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $2,018   ($248,727 - $246,709).

MarketWatch 12/11/13 Wed. 4:32  pm by Victor Reklaitis says  US stocks dropped on Wednesday, suffering their worst losses in more than a month, as investors digested the Washington budget deal that could give the Federal Reserve another reason to scale back its bond-buying program soon. The S&P 500 SPX -1.13%  fell 20.40 points, or 1.1%, to close 1,782.22, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.81%  shed 129.60 points, or 0.8%, to finish at 15,843.53.The Nasdaq Composite COMP -1.40%  slid 56.68 points, or 1.4%, to end at 4,003.81.All three indexes endured their worst losses since Nov. 7. The S&P 500 closed below its milestone level of 1,800 for the first time in four sessions, and the benchmark index had its lowest close since Nov. 20.Investors focused on the U.S. budget deal announced late Tuesday, which gives the Fed another reason to pare its quantitative-easing program at its Dec. 17-18 meeting. Failure to come up with a budget agreement could have triggered another government shutdown, and the Fed’s concerns about that scenario would have meant a later tapering, analysts said. Tapering refers to a reduction in the Fed’s $85 billion-a-month bond-buying program that has boosted equities.“Fiscal uncertainty has been one of the factors holding the Fed back — something that was proven justified with the fiscal debacle in October. We continue to look for the Fed to start tapering at their meeting next week,” Allan von Mehren, chief analyst at Danske Bank, wrote in a note.Tom Karsten, president and chief investment officer at Karsten Advisors, said: “We’re certainly seeing a pause in the market.” He noted that there was uncertainty over government policy, including the potential taper and whether Congress would pass the budget accord.Investors “know stocks have had a great run” this year, Karsten added, and they’re questioning how much further equities can go.
