Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of Dec. 9, 2013  and a summary of Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of Dec. 9, 2013.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 15875.26 down 9.31 or 0.06% from  Monday's  close of 15884.57. Of  the Dow components   9 gained and  21  declined.   The biggest gainer dollar-wise   was Visa up $5.50 and percentage-wise was 3M up 2.92 % .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM down $2.09    and percentage-wise was Verizon down 1.45% .

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2472.03 down 1.45   from Monday's closing numerator of 2473.48. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

As of the open  of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5  of  Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Tuesday's   trailing P/E ratio is  16.31 up from Monday's  trailing P/E of 16.18  (last year it was 14.60).  Tuesday's   P/E estimate is  14.98 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 14.98   (year ago it was 12.59) and Tuesday's  dividend yield is  2.16 down from yesterday's  dividend yield of 2.20  (last year it was 2.62). The Dow's all-time high was 16,097.33 on November 27, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $82.40 down 5 cents from  Monday's average closing price of $82.45.  The median closing price of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $77.93   (HD/WMT/) down 49 cents from Monday's median closing price of $78.42.     (HD/WMT).  The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was Cisco.

If  Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $145  ($247,348 - $247,203).

MarketWatch 12/17/13 Tues. 4:40 pm by Anora Mahmudova says  US stocks closed the volatile session lower on Tuesday as markets digested a slew of economic data and focused on the Federal Reserve’s upcoming decision on the fate of the stimulus program.
Indexes attempted to break higher in the afternoon and briefly succeeded, but sold off in the last hour. Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA -0.06%  closed down nine points to 15,875.26. The S&P 500 index SPX -0.31%  closed 5 points, or 0.3% lower to 1,781.00. The benchmark index was down five days out of past six sessions. Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.15%  was down six points, or 0.1, to 4,023.68.
After a big run in recent months and a small correction last week, markets are now reflecting on the outcome of the Fed meeting,” said Colin Cieszynski, senior market analyst at CMC Markets.
“Markets have priced in a 10% chance of a December taper, but most analysts do not think it will happen until early next year. Even if they decide to start the taper in December it will be modest, so the Fed can test the waters. While unemployment figures may warrant it, inflation is still below what the Fed would like it to be,” he added.
Investors digested a slew of economic data to assess how and when the Fed will decide to begin reducing its $85 billion a month stimulus program, which added more than $1 trillion to its balance sheet over the past year. The Fed is expected to announce its decision on Wednesday afternoon.
Prices of consumer goods did not change from the previous months, leaving the inflation rate on the annualized base at 1.2%, still below the Fed target, making its decision to start the taper sooner rather than later more difficult. The U.S. current-account deficit narrowed to $94.8 billion in the third quarter, marking the lowest level since Fall 2009, the government said Tuesday.

MarketWatch 12/16/13 Mon. 4:59 pm by Anora Mahmudova says  US stocks  rose on Monday as a flurry of economic data indicated solid improvements in business activity across the country.
The S&P 500 /SPX +0.63%  broke a four-day losing streak and closed 11.22 points, or 0.6%, higher at 1,786.54. The Dow DJIA +0.82%   closed higher for the second-straight session, up 129.21 points or 0.8% higher to 15,884.57. The Nasdaq Composite indexCOMP +0.71% closed up 28.54 points, or 0.7%, rising to 4,029.52.    The Empire State Manufacturing Index rebounded in December after a slump in November, though by less than expected. Markit’s U.S. Purchasing Managers’ Manufacturing index rose further into expansion at 54.4. Industrial production jumped 1.1% in November, its biggest one-month gain in a year, and surpassed its pre-recession peak, versus a 0.1% fall the month before.
Despite Friday’s gains on the main indexes, stock markets finished last week with losses, retreating from some of their cyclical highs. Monday’s broad-based gains on the S&P 500 were led by energy and technology sectors.
“We are transitioning to a period when the good news is good news. The more markets react this way, the more muted the reaction to the taper will be,” said Drew Wilson, investment analyst at Fenimore Asset Management.
“Tapering still could be a significant event and the Fed is worried about such reaction. It is good to see that markets have began to expect it sooner rather than later,” he added.
  • Comment : Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial, says that given really good numbers on industrial production, especially capacity utilization, markets are satisfied with the Fed beginning the taper soon. However, she believes markets are expecting that to happen early next year. “For the past several weeks, stocks have been following the Treasury markets and 10-year yields did not surge in reaction to the economic data. This suggests that markets expect the Fed to lay out the groundwork for the taper, but do not expect it to start in December. The main basis for bond markets to react that way is the fact that the inflationary pressures are still below where the Fed would like them to be in order to start the taper,” Krosby told MarketWatch.
  • Today’s movers & shakers: LSI Corporation LSI +38.56%  surged 39%, to $10.96, after the semiconductor maker on Monday agreed to be acquired by Avago Technologies Ltd.
