12/31/13 Tues pm Dow Closes at 16576.66 up 72.37 or 0.44%, a Record High

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,503 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of Dec. 9, 2013  and a summary of Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of Dec. 9, 2013.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 16576.66 up 72.37 or 0.44%   from  Monday's  close of 16504.29.  Of  the Dow components  23   gained and  7 declined.   The biggest gainer dollar-wise  was Visa up $1.77 and percentage-wise was American Express up 1.27 %.   The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Johnson & Johnson down 71 cents or 0.77%.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2581.25 up 11.27  from Monday's closing numerator of 2569.98. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

As of the open  of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5  of  Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Tuesday's   trailing P/E ratio is  16.83 up from Monday's  trailing P/E of 16.81   (last year it was 14.55).  Tuesday's   P/E estimate is  15.25 unchanged    from Monday's closing  P/E estimate of 15.25   (year ago it was 12.57) and Monday's  dividend yield is  2.06 down from Monday's closing  dividend yield of 2.07  (last year it was 2.68). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.04 up 37 cents from  Monday's average closing price of $85.67.  The median closing price of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $80.52    (WMT/HD) up 18 cents from Monday's median closing price of $80.34.     (NKE/HD).  The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was Cisco.

If  Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,127   ($258,125 - $259,998).

MarketWatch 12/31/13 Tues. 3:32 pm by William L. Watts says U.S. stocks  trimmed gains but were still set to end a record-breaking 2013 on a high note, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 venturing further into uncharted territory as the blue-chip index remained on track for its largest annual percentage gain since 1995.
The S&P 500  SPX +0.40%  was up 1.74 points, or 0.1%, at 1,842.81, contributing to a 29.2% rise for the year and leaving it on track for its largest annual percentage jump since 1997.
The Dow industrialsDJIA +0.44%  remained up 16.20 or 0.3%, to trade at 16,520.49, a day after the index notched its 51st record close of 2013. The blue chips are on track for an annual rise of more than 26%.
The Nasdaq CompositeCOMP +0.54% , meanwhile, advanced 12.74 points, or 0.3%, to 4,166.66 The index is up more than 38% over the course of 2013, which would be the biggest rise since 2009.
The strength of the 2013 rally caught most market prognosticators by surprise.
The previous year saw investors fretting over numerous events, from the presidential election to the impending fiscal cliff and Europe’s debt crisis. With the election in the rearview mirror, policy makers averting a disastrous fiscal mistake and Europe appearing to be slowly on the mend, the stock market in 2013 likely captured some of the returns that would otherwise have been produced in 2012, said Stuart Freeman, chief equity strategist at Wells Fargo Advisors in St. Louis.
The S&P 500 advanced 13.4% in 2012, according to FactSet.
While the market’s strong finish into the end of the year has investors worrying that a pullback may be overdue, Freeman sees little threat for a January pullback. Fourth-quarter earnings are likely to top expectations and the market seasonally performs well in the January-to-May period, in part due to flows to retirement accounts.
Investors in 2014, however, are likely to see a “bumpier ride,” he said.
“Our position is the year will bring a much more moderate return and more volatility,” Freeman said.
Meanwhile, U.S. economic growth and job creation appear likely to continue slowly gaining momentum, providing room for increased capital spending, while a further recovery in Europe will also aid large-cap firms with heavy international sales exposure, he said.
Freeman said he expects large-cap cyclicals to take over leadership in 2014 after outperformance by mid- and small-cap firms in 2013. Wells Fargo has overweight recommendations on the industrial, consumer discretionary and technology sectors, while underweighting utilities and health care.
Volume remained light on Tuesday. Stocks are putting in a full day of trading, but markets will be closed Wednesday for New Year’s Day.
Economic data provided a little fodder in early action. Stocks extended gains Tuesday morning after the Conference Board said its consumer confidence index rose more than expected to 78.2 in December from a revised 72 in November.
“Rising equity markets, improving labor market conditions, rising home values and relative stability in Washington has consumers feeling more optimistic as we turn the corner into 2014,” said Lindsey Piegza, chief economist at Sterne Agee.
“Of course optimism can only go so far. Eventually that euphoric feeling will have to be supported by sustainable job and income growth in order to sustain the heightened growth and spending levels a +75 confidence reading implies,” Piegza said, in a note. Earlier, stock-index futures were little budged by a 0.2% rise in the Case-Shiller home-price index for October. Stocks trimmed gains slightly but remained in positive territory after the Chicago Business Barometer, a gauge of business activity in the region, fell more than expected in December but remained strong overall.
The index dropped to 59.1% in December from 63% a month earlier. Economists had expected a reading of 61%. Any reading above 50% indicates expansion. Among blue chips, American Express Co. AXP +0.02%  rose 1%, while Cisco Systems Inc. CSCO +0.11%  added 0.7% to lead the Dow higher.
Boeing Co. BA +0.00% , followed by American ExpressAXP +0.02% , have been the top Dow performers in 2013, with Boeing up more than 80% since the beginning of the year and American Express adding more than 57%.
Shares of streaming movie-rental firm Netflix /quotes/zigman/87598/delayed/quotes/nls/nflx NFLX +0.02%  slipped 0.4% after the firm said Chief Executive Reed Hastings would get a 50% raise in 2014.
Shares of Hertz Global HoldingsHTZ +10.46%  gained more than 10% after the car-rental company said it would adopt a so-called poison pill aimed at barring investors from collecting a controlling stake in the company.
Twitter Inc. TWTR +5.27%  was on the rebound after a two-day slide, rising 4.3% after tumbling more than 5% Monday and 13% on Friday. The sharp pullback came after a downgrade Friday by Macquarie analyst Ben Schacher. Twitter, which made its trading debut in an initial public offering last month, remains up more than 50% since the beginning of December.

The following are excerpts from Tues. morning's Blog:

A read of the print editions of  Tuesday's  Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily,  New York Times, USA Today,   Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg)  yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Monday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:   The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 16504.29 up 25.88 or 0.16%   from  Friday's  close of 16478.41. For the year the Dow is up 25.95%. Of  the Dow components 19    gained, Caterpillar and Microsoft were unchanged and  9 declined.   The biggest gainer dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was  Disney up $1.88 or 2.53%.   The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Exxon down $1.20 or  1.18%.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2569.98 up 4.03 from Friday's closing numerator of 2565.95.

WSJ pC4 "U.S. shares pause ahead of holiday; Dow hits record" by Dan Strumpf says stocks wavered during the next to last trading session of 2013 leaving the market on track for its best annual performance since the late 1990's. Disney is charted as Guggenheim upgraded it to buy from neutral, noting coming films.

IBD pB2 "Stocks waver to flat close as solid 2013 nears end" by Vincent Mao says stocks ended mostly lower Mon as the action was narrowly mixed in higher trade and the current outlook is confirmed uptrend.  to Dow rose thanks to Disney which had a strong weekend for its film, Frozen.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.67 up 14 cents from  Friday's average closing price of $85.53.  The median closing price of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $80.34   (NKE/HD) up 28 cents from Friday's median closing price of $80.06.     (WMT/HD).  The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was Cisco.

If  Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $403   ($259,998 - $256,595).

MarketWatch 12/30/13 Mon. 4:24 pm by William L. Watts says U.S. stocks  finished little changed on Monday, although the Dow Jones Industrial Average managed to eke out its 51st record close of 2013 in the next-to-last trading session of the year, while shares of Twitter extended a decline.
Volume was thin, with investors finding little fuel to push the market either way, while formerly highflying Twitter Inc. shares had their wings clipped for a second straight day.
The S&P 500 SPX -0.02%  declined 0.33 point, or less than 0.1%, to finish at 1,841.07, leaving it on track for an annual percentage gain of more than 29% and its biggest annual rise since 1997.
The Dow DJIA +0.16%  ended the day near its session high with a gain of 25.88 points, or 0.2%, at 16,504.29. The rise was enough to take out the previous record-high close set on Thursday and leaves the index up more than 26% for the year.
The Nasdaq Composite index COMP -0.06% shed 2.40 points, or 0.1%, to 4,154.20. This year’s rally has left the index at levels last seen in 2000 and headed for an annual rise of 37.6%.
A strong finish to a robust year has investors worrying the market may be overdue for at least a near-term pullback, analysts said, noting high levels of margin debt and bullish sentiment.
While a pullback wouldn’t be a shock, the market’s recent performance doesn’t necessarily bode poorly for 2014, although the magnitude of any rise isn’t likely to match that seen this year, said Bob Landry, executive director and portfolio manager at USAA Investments in San Antonio.
Landry said he’s cautiously optimistic the market will push higher in 2014 as economic growth continues to improve, barring any “policy mistakes” out of Washington, D.C., or some unforeseen geopolitical disaster.
The first big test for the market will come in January as fourth-quarter earnings season gets under way, he said.
Analysts surveyed by FactSet now expect earnings by S&P 500 companies to grow 6.3% in the fourth quarter, which is down from initial expectations for growth of around 9.5%, Landry noted. If companies can beat expectations, it would likely help keep the market chugging along, he said.
The economic calendar remained light on Monday.
The National Association of Realtors said its index of pending home sales rose 0.2% in November to 101.7, slightly above a 10-month low of 101.5 in October, but down from 103.3 in November 2012. The data had little impact on stocks.
The yield on the 10-year Treasury note 10_YEAR 0.00%  pushed back above 3% last week, but slipped in recent action to around 2.98%. Yields fall as bond prices decline. Rising rates can unsettle stocks, though a gradual rise in rates driven by improving economic growth could likely be taken in stride, analysts said.
Among blue chips, Walt Disney Co. DIS -0.03% led the way with a 2.5% gain. Oil producers Exxon Mobil Corp.XOM +0.03%  , down 1.2%, and Chevron Corp.                         CVX -0.08% CVX -0.08% , off 0.8%, were among the biggest decliners.
In other action,Twitter TWTR -0.35% fell 5.1%. Shares of the microblogging platform dropped more than 13% on Friday as analysts expressed doubts about its highflying performance. Twitter made its debut in an IPO earlier this year and remains up by around 46% for the month of December.
Shares of social network Facebook Inc. b FB -0.07%  were also under pressure, shedding 3.2%, but remained on track for a nearly 102% annual rise. Career-oriented social network LinkedIn Corp. LNKD -0.79%  fell 0.8%.
Shares of Crocs Inc.CROX +0.37%  soared 21% after Chief Financial Officer Jeff Lasher said in an interview that Blackstone Group LP BX +0.03%  will invest $200 million in the shoe company and that Chief Executive John McCarvel will retire by late April.
Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. CTB -0.04%  rose more than 5%. The shares had initially tumbled after the company terminated a $2.2 billion merger agreement with Indian suitor Apollo Tyres Ltd.
