The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 16373.86 up 115.92 or 0.71%  from Monday's close of 16257.94.  Of the Dow components 26    gained and 4   declined.  MarketWatch 1/14/14 Tues. 5:07 pm by Anora Mahmudova says U.S. stocks rallied to their best day of the year Tuesday as investors welcomed stronger-than-expected retail sales, got a boost from Google Inc. and Apple Inc., and absorbed earnings results from J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. and Wells Fargo & Co.
The S&P 500 SPX +1.08%  closed 19.68 points, or 1.1%, higher at 1,838.88, with the technology sector leading broad-based gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.71%  rose 115.92 points, or 0.7% to 16,373.86, breaking a four-session losing streak. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.70%  gained 69.71 points, or 1.7% to 4,183.02 and turned positive this year with a gain of 0.15%, according to FactSet data.A batch of economic data released on Tuesday comforted those who are betting on stronger growth.
Retail sales in December rose more than expected, as Americans bought more clothes and food during the holidays, shopping at retailers’ brick-and-mortar stores as well as online, according to government data.
Inventories at U.S. businesses also rose more than forecast in November, according to data released by the U.S. Commerce Department, while prices of goods imported into the U.S. were unchanged in December and fell slightly for the full year, the U.S. Department of Labor said Tuesday. Small business owners also grew more optimistic, as the index measuring the sentiment rose 1.4 points to 93.9 in December. The National Federation of Independent Business said the index was nonetheless short of its recovery high of 95.4 and well below the readings over 100 that typify post-recession periods.Brad McMillan, chief investment officer for Commonwealth Financial, said two forces were driving stocks right now.
“On the one hand, recent data suggest that the economic growth is accelerating, which should be good news for the corporations whose revenues will be dependent on such growth. On the other hand, if the economy grows faster than we think and is overheating, the Fed will accelerate tapering but more importantly might start tightening sooner than what markets are expecting at the moment,” McMillan said.
“All this means that investors should be cautious about the stock markets this year, especially as our research shows that more than 80% of stocks on the S&P 500 are trading above their historical price-to-book valuations,” he added.Investors also focused on earnings from two of the country’s largest banks. J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. JPM +0.07%  rose as high as 1% but gave up nearly all of its gains by the end of the day. Earnings topped expectations, though investment-banking revenue and mortgage originations slumped.

Wells Fargo WFC +0.07% shares ended the day near flat after fourth-quarter earnings were broadly in line with analysts’ expectations.Shares of Google Inc. GOOG +0.06% climbed 2.4% after the technology company said late Monday that it was buying Nest Labs Inc., a home-automation company, for $3.2 billion. The firm was founded by former Apple Inc. AAPL +0.17%  engineers, one of whom was responsible for designing early generations of the iPod and iPhone. Apple, which like Google is a heavyweight on the Nasdaq Composite, ended nearly 2% higher.Time Warner Cable Inc. TWC +2.72%  shares rose 2.7% following the disclosure late Monday of an offer from Charter Communications Inc. CHTR +2.32% at $132.50 per share in cash and stock that the cable provider’s board rejected as “grossly inadequate.”
