The Dow Jones Industrial Average:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 16458.56 up 41.55 or 0.25%  from Thursday's close of 16417.01.  For the week the Dow is up $21.51 or 0.13%  from last Friday's close of 16,437.05. For the year the Dow is down 0.71%.  Of the Dow components 9   gained and 21   declined. The  biggest gainer dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Visa up $10.41 or 4.69%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Nike down $1.40 and percentage-wise was Intel down 2.6 %.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2562.86 up 6.47  from Thursday's closing numerator of 2556.39. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

WSJ pB5 "Disappointing earnings at Intel, GE weigh on stocks" by Matt Jarzemsky says stocks mostly fell as investors digested disappointing earnings from Intel and GE.  The Dow was bolstered by gains in Visa, IBM & Goldman Sachs.

IBD pB8 "Options expiration fuels another distribution day" by Ken Shreve says options expired Fri resulting in higher vol & another distribution day for the Nasdaq & S&P 500.  The current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.  Dow was propped up by American express which reported strong earnings before the open.  Visa rode American Express' coattails higher with a 5% gain of its own.  Intel had weaker than expected 4Q earnings late Thurs.

FT p11 "Amex races to a record high after profits double" by Eric Platt says American express hit an all time high lifting its market cap to almost $100bn after reporting 4Q profits that doubled from a eyar earlier. GE fell after its missed goals set by the CEO.  Intel fell 3% after reporting quarterly results short of analyst expectations.

Sat. AJC pA8 "Earnings drag S&P, nasdaq" by AP says investors weren't impressed with the earnings news from big US firms Fri.  Intel slumped after giving a weak rev forecast and GE dropped after its profit margins fell short.


As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6 of  Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 17.04 down from Friday's trailing P/E of 17.08 (last year it was 15.12). Monday's P/E estimate is 14.82 unchanged from Friday's closing P/E estimate of 14.82 (year ago it was 12.28) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.08 down from Friday's closing dividend yield of 2.09 (last year it was 2.61). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.


The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.43 up 22 cents from Thursday's average closing price of $85.21. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $78.60 (WMT/HD) down 41 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $79.01        (WMT/HD). The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume was GE.


If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $647    ($256,286 -$255,629).

 MarketWatch 1/17/14 Fri. 4:08 pm by Anora Mahmudova says U.S. stocks closed generally lower on Friday as disappointing results from Intel Corp. and General Electric Co. weighed on sentiment. Investors also digested a mixed bag of economic data. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.25% closed 41.55 points, or 0.3%, higher at 16,458.56 as gains in Visa Inc. and American Express Company lifted the index. The blue-chip index added 0.1% over the week, its first weekly gain this year. The S&P 500 SPX -0.39% finished the day down 7.19 points, or 0.4%, to 1,838.70 and was 0.2% lower for the week. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.50% shed 21.11 points, or 0.5%, to 4,197.58 but eked out a 0.6% weekly gain.

Chevron:   WSJ pB1 "Shell bruised by big bets" by Justin Scheck says the steep costs of elephant projects are haunting Shell and it is the latest sign of profit pressure squeezing Shell, chevron and Exxon who invested heavily in remote projects in places like deep water frozen tundra and mountainous jungles.

Cisco: Barron's p23 "A more mobile Intel still msut fix its financial reporting" by Tiernan Ray says Intel's performance was not bad in a rough info tech environment that has of late humbled Cisco and IBM.  In an age when PCs and laptops are just one of many pesonal computing options, Intel should not keep its PC and mobile chips separate on the income statement.
