MarketWatch 1/8/14 Wed. 4:24 pm by Anora Mahmudova says U.S. stock closed mostly lower on Wednesday after minutes from the last Federal Open Market Committee meeting showed that a majority of officials judged the effects of the monthly asset purchases to be diminishing over time.Investors also pondered the implications of an upbeat private-sector jobs report that was released on Wednesday morning. The S&P 500 SPX -0.02%  closed down less than a point to 1,837.49. On Tuesday, the benchmark index recorded its first gain this year, snapping a three-day skid. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.41%  fell 68.20 points, or 0.4%, on Wednesday to 16,462.74, while the Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.30%  rose 12.43 points, or 0.3%, to 4,165.61.Federal Reserve officials agreed in December to scale back their asset-purchase program as most believed that the benefits of the controversial policy were eroding as time passed, according to minutes from their last meeting released Wednesday. By a 9-to-1 vote, the Fed on Dec. 18 decided to trim its asset-purchase program by $10 billion to $75 billion per month starting in January.“What surprised us and other investors the most was the fact that the main reason behind the taper decision was not so much the improving economy, but what they saw as diminishing effects of the asset purchases,” said Chris Gaffney, senior market strategist at EverBank.“The reaction was largely muted because markets have shifted their focus from tapering of the monetary stimulus back to the economy and earnings,” Gaffney said.Automatic Data Processing said on Wednesday that private employers created 238,000 jobs in December, exceeding estimates. Economists polled by MarketWatch expected a gain of 215,000 jobs. Economists use ADP’s data to get a sense of the U.S. Labor Department’s employment report, which will be released Friday and covers government jobs in addition to the private sector.
Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, wrote that while “it is not a guarantee, the odds now favor a consensus-beating report on Friday.”• Better-than-expected jobs numbers strengthened the case for further tapering of the Federal Reserve’s bond-buying program, which has boosted equities. Phil Orlando, chief equity strategist at Federated Investors, said markets were wrong to sell off on good news and will eventually correct themselves.“The ADP numbers were excellent today, not only did they beat consensus estimates by a wide margin, the November numbers were also revised upwards,” Orlando said.
“These numbers, as well as phenomenal numbers from the trade deficit data, have prompted many analysts to upgrade their estimates for the GDP,” he added.Shares of Micron Technology Inc. MU -0.08%  surged nearly 10% after the chip maker reported results late Tuesday that beat Wall Street expectations.
Forest Laboratories Inc. FRX -0.04%  rallied 18% after announcing that it would acquire Aptalis, a specialty pharmaceutical company, for $2.9 billion in cash.Constellation Brands Inc. STZ -0.44%  shares climbed 9.6% after the beverage company beat its third-quarter earnings target and raised its full-year profit outlook.Apollo Education Group Inc. TCS +0.72%  dropped nearly 15% after the retailer said late Tuesday that it had swung to a third-quarter loss. The firm went public in early November.Twitter Inc. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks climb in broad rally" by Kaitlyn Kiernan says stocks rose with the S&P posting its first gain of the year with help fom encouraging economic news.  JPMorgan was one of 6 Dow firms down for the day dropping 68 cents after it settlement to pay victims of Madoff.

NYT pB3 "Market rally ends new year skid" & AJC pA11 "Health care stocks lift Dow" by AP says the Dow got a lift from health care stocks on Tues.  UnitedHealth Group and Johnson & Johnson both rose after analysts' raised their recommendations.

MarketWatch 1/7/14 Tues. 4:20 pm by Victor Reklaitis says U.S. stocks rallied on Tuesday, helped by data showing a smaller-than-expected trade gap and gains by health-care stocks following an upgrade for UnitedHealth Group Inc.Firmer overseas markets also provided a lift, and traders absorbed largely encouraging comments from Federal Reserve officials. The S&P 500 SPX +0.61%  gained 11.11 points, or 0.6%, to close at 1,837.88, snapping the three-day losing streak that it endured at the start of 2014. The benchmark index climbed nearer to its record closing level of 1,848.36 hit on Dec. 31.The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.64%  rose 105.84 points, or 0.6%, to end at 16,530.94. UnitedHealth Group Inc. UNH +0.20%  performed best among Dow components and provided a boost to the blue-chip index after Deutsche Bank upgraded the company on Tuesday to buy from hold. The Dow moved near to its own Dec. 31 record close of 16,576.66.The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.96% advanced 39.50 points, or 1%, to finish at 4,153.18.Tuesday’s trade report made some strategists more optimistic about U.S. economic growth.“The U.S. trade deficit is the arcane statistic to watch in 2014, and it opened with a positive whammy, decreasing by 13% from a revised down deficit last month,” said strategists at ING Investment Management in a note on Tuesday.“This is a direct benefit to top line GDP growth, and we can expect positive surprises here as well. So while the S&P 500 began the year with a rough start, it looks like the economy is doing just fine.”
  • Today’s economic news: The U.S. trade deficit fell to $34.3 billion in November, the Commerce Department said on Tuesday. That was a steeper-than-expected drop and could signal a stronger economy. Meanwhile, Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren said the central bank should only wind down its bond-buying program gradually. San Francisco Fed President John Williams said the Fed likely will end its bond buys this year, adding that he sees “newfound momentum” in the economy.
  • What strategists are saying: “As a whole, the November trade report adds upside risk to our [fourth-quarter] GDP forecast and it now looks like [fourth-quarter] real GDP growth is tracking closer to 3.0% than the current 2.5% forecast,” said Daniel Silver, a J.P. Morgan economist, in a note on Tuesday. But overall this week, investors likely will pay the most attention to Friday’s jobs report and Wednesday’s release of minutes from the Fed’s Dec. 18 meeting, where the central bank decided to taper its bond buys. Earnings season also unofficially kicks off Thursday.
  • Today’s movers and shakers: Shares in retailer GameStop Corp. GME -0.66%   lost 8.4% on news of another way to buy video games, while Netflix Inc. NFLX -0.13%  fell 5.6% after Morgan Stanley cut the video-streaming company to underweight from equal weight. Read more in the Movers & Shakers column.
  • Other markets: European stocks pushed higher Tuesday after the annual rate of euro-zone inflation fell further below the European Central Bank’s target in December. That triggered some deflation concerns, but analysts also said it could put pressure on the ECB to respond with stimulus measures. Asian stocks closed mostly higher, while gold fell, but the dollar rose and oil futures snapped a five-session losing streak.
