The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 16340.08 down 11.17 or 0.07%    from Tuesday's close of 16351.25. Of the Dow components  15   gained and 15 declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise    and percentage-wise was Chevron up $1.1or 1%.   The biggest decliner dollar-wise  was Boeing down $1.14 and percentage-wise was Pfizer down 1.36%.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2544.41 down  1.74 from  Tuesday's closing numerator of 2546.15. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.07 up from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.13     (last year it was 16.04).  Wednesday's P/E estimate is 14.75 unchanged from  Tuesday's P/E estimate of 14.55   (year ago it was 12.69) and Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.17 down fromTuesday's dividend yield of 2.18  (last year it was 2.44). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $84.81 down 6 cents    from Tuesday's average closing price of $84.87. The median closing price of   Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $81.38 (PG/DIS) up $1.38 cents  from Tuesday's median closing price of $80.00    (PG/DIS). If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $174  ($254,615 - $254,441).

3/12/14 Wed. 4:11   pm MarketWatch by Victor Reklaitis says U.S. stocks finished little changed on Wednesday, erasing early losses that followed a sell-off in Asian and European equities. Analysts attributed the early selling to worries about China's slowdown and continued Russia-Ukraine tensions. The S&P 500 SPX +0.03% ended up 0.57 point, or less than 0.1%, at 1,868.20, leaving the benchmark index just 0.5% off Friday's record close. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.07% dipped 11.24 points, or 0.1%, to close at 16,340.01, dropping for the third day in a row. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.38% gained 16.14 points, or 0.4%, to finish at 4,323.33, halting a four-session losing streak. There was a lack of catalysts on Wednesday, said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital. "Basically, we have no economic numbers to speak of today," Cardillo told MarketWatch. The market just followed the international markets in the early going, but it didn't show signs of collapsing and stayed near its record highs, he said.
