http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,607 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of Dow 30 components'  recent SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. -carries Georgia) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 16336.19 up 88.97 or 0.55%  from Monday's close of 16247.22. For the year the Dow is down 3.75%. Of the Dow components 27  gained and 3 declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Microsoft up $1.50 or 3.94%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Boeing down $1.38 or 1.1%.

WSJ pC4 "S&P 500 flirts with another high" by Tomi Kilgore says US stocks rallied fora 2nd straight session. Microsoft is charted under Good News as it is planning a version of its Office suite for Apple's iPad.

IbD pB6 "Stock rebound continues; indexes near new highs" by Juan Carlos Arancibia says the stock market Tues continued to rebound, closing just a step away from new highs as Tuesday's action saw indexes continue to rebound & the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.

FT p19 "Microsoft leads the pack on hopes of mobile phone progress" by Richard Blackden says Microsoft rose on hopes that Microsoft will make progress in driving its software deeper into the mobile market.  Cisco was out of favor after Barclays cut its rating to underweight.

NYT pB10 "Economic data gives shares a lift" by AP &AJC pA13 "Housing, Ukraine fuel gains" by AP says stocks rose Tues due to encouraging news on housing & on hopes that the Ukraine situations would not escalate.

As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.05 up from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 15.96  (last year it was 15.90).  Wednesday's P/E estimate is 14.52 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 14.52   (year ago it was 12.97) and Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.18 down  from Tuesday's dividend yield of 2.19  (last year it was 2.46). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2543.80 up 13.85 from  Monday's closing numerator of 2529.95.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $84.79  up 46 cents  from Monday's average closing price of $84.33. The median closing price of   Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.79  (PG/HD) up 8 cents   from Monday's median closing price of $79.71    (PG/HD). The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume was Microsoft.

If  Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,385  ($254,380 - $252,995).

3/18/14 Tues. 4:44   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says U.S. stocks rose for a second day in a row Tuesday, with the S&P 500 ending just shy of all-time highs as worries faded that Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea region would lead to further near-term military conflict. The S&P 500 SPX +0.72%  added 13.42 points, or 0.7%, to close at 1,872.25, just 0.3% off its all-time closing high of 1,878.04 set earlier in the month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.55%  advanced 88.97 points, or 0.5%, to 16,336.19, around 1.5% off its all-time closing high from Dec. 31. Microsoft Corp. MSFT -0.20%  led Dow gainers and a broad tech rally, jumping 3.9% to finish at its highest level since 2000 on reports its Office suite of software will soon be available on Apple Inc.’s AAPL -0.02%  mobile devices.
With tech stocks surging, the Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.25%  jumped 53.36 points, or 1.2%, to 4,333.31.Markets rallied on Monday after the European and U.S. sanctions were limited to visa bans and asset freezes. Tuesday’s annexation of Crimea, which happened without a prospect of a full-blown invasion, eased investors’ fears and allowed them to focus on fundamentals.Russia’s President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday signed a treaty to annex Crimea after an overwhelming majority of its citizens on Sunday voted to leave Ukraine. In his prepared remarks, Putin also said he does not want to partition Ukraine. While that seemed to cheer investors, there were plenty of skeptics who argued that the prospects of further Eastern European turmoil can’t be dismissed.“Of course, when it comes to Vlad the Crimean Impaler, it is all about what he does, not what he says,” said Joel Naroff, economist at Naroff Economic Advisors in Holland, Pa., in a note. “Still, investors like soothing tones, so any time he tries to make nice, markets will likely stabilize.”
As the events in Russia and Ukraine stole the show, reaction to a pair of economic reports that were in line with expectations was muted. Investors shifted their attention to the Federal Reserve’s two-day policy-setting meeting set to conclude Wednesday. The Fed will release a policy statement and updated economic forecasts on Wednesday afternoon. Chairwoman Yellen is due to hold a news conference after the meeting, the first to be led by her. Analysts expect the Fed will roll out a new low-rate pledge and further tapering of its monthly bond-buying program. In economic news, construction on new U.S. homes fell slightly in February, but in a sign that work will pick up as the weather warms, builders filed more permits to start new projects -- mainly on multi-dwelling units like condos and apartments. The previous months’ number was revised higher. Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics wrote housing starts numbers “could have been worse, but single-family permits numbers are worrying.”“The not-so-good news is that all the increase in permits in February was in the volatile multi-family component, while single-family fell for the third straight month to their lowest level since Jan 13. The trend here is clearly downwards, and SF starts are even weaker,” he said in a note.Consumer prices in the U.S. rose slightly in February because of higher food and housing costs, but overall inflation remained quiet, according to the latest government figures.Among individual stocks, Hewlett-Packard HPQ -0.10%   jumped 3.9% after Barclays upgraded the stock to overweight from equal weight. Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes said H-P “could gain share for several quarters” in the low-end server business at the expense of Lenovo which has acquired IBM Corp.’s X86 server business.
