http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,626 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent  ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of Dow 30 components'  recent SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 16412.71 down 159.84 or 0.96%  from Thursday's close of 16572.55.   For the week the Dow was up 89.65 or 0.55% from last Friday's Dow close of 16323.06. Of the Dow components  4   gained   and   26  declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Travelers up 22 cents and percentage-wise was Coca-Cola up 0.39%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Visa down $7.31 or 3.4%.

4/4/14 Fri. 4:43   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says US . stocks fell sharply, after heavy selling in momentum stocks such as biotechs and Internet companies on Friday reversed an early rally, sending the Nasdaq Composite to its worst day in two months.
The markets opened higher following a government report showing a steady pace of jobs growth, lifting both the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average to intraday highs.

The Nasdaq Composite                 COMP -2.60%  fell 110.01 points, or 2.6%, to 4,127.73. Friday’s losses resulted in a second weekly loss in a row. Biotechnology and Internet stocks were the worst hit. The iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology ETFIBB +0.22% , a benchmark for that sector, fell 4%. Shares in Apple Inc. /AAPL +0.11% , Nasdaq’s heaviest weighted component, were down 1.3%. Facebook Inc. FB +0.14% , considered a momentum play, tumbled 4.6%. The stock is now in bear market , having fallen more than 20% from its all-time closing high set on March 10.
The S&P 500 SPX -1.25%  ended the day 23.68 points, or 1.3%, lower at 1,865.09. The benchmark index eked out a 0.4% gain over the week. Technology and consumer discretionary sector stocks led the losses, while investors piled into the defensive utilities sector, the only one closing higher.
The Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA -0.96%  dropped 159.84 points, or 1%, to 16,412.71 but managed to stay 0.5% higher on the week. Microsoft Corp /t MSFT +0.20% and Visa Inc                         V -3.40% , down 2.8% and 3.4% respectively, were leading the losses among the blue chips.
“We are seeing a key reversal, significant retrenchment in risk in equity markets. For days we saw equities going higher while gold and oil drifted lower and now this trend has reversed,” said Colin Cieszynski, senior market analyst at CMC markets.
“Traders are stepping back from the highflying stocks like Tesla and Facebook, which is a bearish indicator. This is a sign that this rally is tired and is in need of a pullback,” he added.
The U.S. created 192,000 jobs in March as hiring rebounded in the early spring. Hiring in January and February was also stronger than originally reported. The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 6.7% as more people went searching for jobs. Economist polled by MarketWatch expected a gain of 200,000 jobs.
“The report was remarkably consistent with what we have been seeing in the past year or so, in one word good but not great,” said Anthony Valeri, investment strategist at LPL Financial.
“Looking at the fed fund futures, this might mean that the Fed will stay in the game a little longer than anticipated when it comes to raising rates,” he added.
Among individual stocks, shares in so-called momentum high-growth stocks dropped sharply, sending some of them into bear territory. Telsa Motors, Inc TSLA -0.03% fell 5.9%, Pandora Media, Inc                         P -4.86% fell 4.9%, Amazon.com, Inc AMZN -0.23% fell 3.2%.

/AMZN 322.27, -0.73, -0.23%                         MYL +1.15%  shares rose 1.5% after reports that Meda AB rejected its proposal to combine the two businesses. “All continued discussions between Meda and Mylan have been terminated without further actions,” said Meda in a statement.
CarMax IncKMX -4.21%  shares fell 4.2% after fourth-quarter results fell short of Wall Street forecasts.
Shares of Anadarko Petroleum Corp.APC -0.01%  rose 2.1%, adding to a 14.5% gain on Thursday, after the company agreed to a settle all claims against its subsidiary Kerr-McGee for $5.15 billion. The case stems from the bankruptcy of Tronox Inc., which was spun off from Kerr-McGee before it was bought by Anadarko in 2006.
In overseas markets, European stocks rose slightly, their ninth-straight gain. Stocks in Asia closed out mostly higher, though gains were muted ahead of the U.S. data. Gold GCM4 +1.54%  moved higher, along with oilCLK4 +0.79% , while the dollar fell against the Japanese yen after the jobs report.

WSJ pC4 "US rally stalls, indexes drift downward" by Chris Dieterich says stocks fell to end a 4 day winning streak as investors digested mixed signals on the US economy & looked ahead to Friday's closely watched U.S. jobs report.

NYT pB10 "Market declines as reluctant investors await release of March  employment data" by Reuters says 2 of the 3 major stock market indexes dipped slightly Thurs. on the eve of the gov's report on March employment, although a drop in biotech shares dragged Nasdaq down 1%.

FT p21 "Wall Street" by Eric Platt says US equities struggled for direction, as separate reports showed a firming in the country's service sector and a rise in unemployment filings.

IBD pb2 "Stocks end win streak, but trade slips off pace" by Paul Whitfield says stocks were down in slower trade Thurs. as the current outlook is still a confirmed uptrend.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2580.61 down 0.06  from  Wednesday's closing numerator of 2580.67.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.02 unchanged  from Wednesday's average closing price of $86.02.  The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.75   (HD/PG) down 29 cents   from Wednesday's median closing price of $80.04  (HD/PG). 4/3/14 Thur. 4:285   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says the U.S. stock market dipped in and out of negative territory and ended Thursday marginally lower, breaking a four-day winning streak.
The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average hit intraday record levels in early trading. However, gains petered out by afternoon, ahead of the March jobs report due on Friday.
Initial reaction to Thursday’s economic reports was muted. Weekly jobless claims rose by more than expected, the U.S. trade deficit gap widened by more than forecast and the ISM services index rose in line with estimates.
Across the Atlantic, European Central Bank President Mario Draghi told reporters the central bank had considered quantitative easing. The ECB left key policy unchanged, but mildly disappointed investors who were hoping for an announcement of quantitative easing measures.
The S&P 500 SPX -0.11%  ended the day 2.13 points, or 0.1%, lower at 1,888.74.
The Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA -.00%  closed down less than a point at 16,572.55, failing to break its record high. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.91%  finished the day down 38.72 points, or 0.9%, at 4,237.74, weighed down by sharp selloffs in highflying stocks such as biotechs and Internet stocks.
Kim Caughey Forrest, senior equity analyst at Fort Pitt Capital, says that markets are taking a breather ahead of the important jobs report due on Friday.
“The ADP data this week and jobless claims were softer and investors are holding their breath before the official jobs numbers. We are finally at the point where data are no longer impacted by cold weather, so Friday’s jobs report will give investors a more accurate indication of where the economy is headed,” Forrest said.
The number of Americans who applied for unemployment benefits in the last week of March rose to the highest level in a month, but initial claims continued to hover near the lowest level since the end of the last recession.
The U.S. trade deficit with other nations rose in February to a five-month high, mainly because of lower exports such as Boeing aircraft and domestically produced petroleum.
Growth picked up last month for the U.S. service sector and other nonmanufacturing companies, according to data released Thursday.
