4/8/14 Tues. am 40% of Households Have Only a Cell Phone

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,631 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent  ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of Dow 30 components'  recent SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Tuesday's Wall St. Journal,   Financial Times,  Investor's  Business Daily,  New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Monday's closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 16245.87 down 166.84 or 1.02%  from Friday's close of 16412.71.  For the year the Dow is down 2%. Of the Dow components  6   gained, Walmart was unchanged   and   23  declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was IBM was $2.75 or 1.43%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs down $4.68 and percentage-wise was Pfizer down 2.99%.

WSJ pC1 "Tech shares lead a broad decline" by Chris Dieterich, Alexandra Scaggs, Dan Strumpf says the Nasdaq fell to its 3rd straight decline & its biggest 3 day % fall since Nov. '11 as investors continue to sour on tech & biotech shares.  Investors are seeking firms that have strong records of profitability as Microsoft and Cisco are each up 4% since 3/5.  JPMorgan posts results on Fri.

NYT pB7 "Market sell-off spreads to other sectors", AJC pA9 "Market's decline continues" by AP says the market logged its longest losing streak in 2 months due to concerns about earnings and sales.

FT p21 "Drug trial results send Pfizer lower on third day of declines" by Eric Platt says US equities weakened for a 3rd straight day.

IBD pB2 "nasdaq bleeds more red; growth stocks in free fall" by Ken Shreve says MOnday's action was down in mixed vol as the current outlook is the market is in a correction.

USAT p1B "Stocks hit by 3rd straight tech wreck" by Adam Shell says Nasdaq is now off 6.4% from its high as there are fears of a wider slump.

As of the open of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 15.98 down from Monday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.15   (last year it was 16.02).  Tuesday's P/E estimate is 14.74 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 14.74   (year ago it was 13.05) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.19 up  from Monday's dividend yield of 2.18   (last year it was 2.39). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2529.74 down 25.98  from  Friday's closing numerator of 2555.72.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $84.32 down 87 cents  from Friday's average closing price of $85.19.  The median closing price of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.81   (DIS/PG) down 29 cents   from Friday's median closing price of $80.10  (PG/DIS). The lowest volume was Travelers  and the highest volume was Cisco.

If  Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $2,598  ($255,572 - $252,974).

4/4/14 Fri. 4:49   pm MarketWatch by Victor Reklaitis and Anora Mahmudova says the U.S. stock market fell sharply on Monday as heavy selling in high-growth stocks, which began on Friday, continued to spill over the broader market.

With Monday’s session light on economic data, investors looked ahead to the start of first-quarter earnings season, and some analysts sounded downbeat about the coming reports.

The Nasdaq Composite COMP -1.16%  fell 47.97 points, or 1.2%, to 4,079.75, falling below its 100-day moving average. The tech-heavy index lost 4.6% over the past three sessions, the steepest three-day loss since November 2011.

The S&P 500 SPX -1.08%  ended the day 20.05 points, or 1.1%, lower at 1,845.04, falling below a key technical level of 1,850 and erasing year-to-date gains. Financial stocks were among the worst hit.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -1.02%  dropped 166.84 points, or 1.3%, to 16,245.87, with Pfizer Inc. PFE +0.26%   and American Express Company AXP -2.88%   leading the losses.

Compared with last week, this week is short on top-tier economic data, so investors are likely to focus instead on earnings reports from the first quarter. Alcoa Inc. AA -0.08% , the aluminum producer and former Dow component, unofficially kicks off the earnings season on Tuesday, when it reports results after the closing bell.

“The selloff of high-growth stocks on Friday spilled over to the rest of the market for the first time and it is worrying,” said Channing Smith, managing director at Capital Advisors.
“With the economy still muddling through and earnings projected to rise ever so slightly, there are doubts about current valuations, especially among highflying companies on the Nasdaq,” he added.

“The weakness has carried over from Friday. It is hard to imagine how the S&P 500 went from a new all-time high to down on the year in just two days, but it happened. The momentum names and technology names were the first to crack, now we are seeing signs that weakness is moving to the overall market,” said Ryan Detrick, senior technical strategist at Schaeffer’s Investment.

Other analysts have said they’re a little skeptical of the naysayers, adding that this will be the 16th quarter or so in a row where we are being cautioned about earnings.

Among individual stocks on Monday, Internet names TripAdvisor Inc. TRIP +0.26%   and Baidu Inc. BIDU -0.05%  fell 2.7% and 3.9%, respectively, adding to their recent losses.

High-growth companies saw their shares continue to slide. Tesla Motors, Inc shares dropped 2.2%. Pandora Media, Inc. P +1.37%  dropped 5%. Telsa and Pandora are one of the handful of momentum stocks that got caught up in Friday’s rout.

Shares in Facebook Inc. FB +0.33%   dipped in and out of negative territory and closed 0.4% higher. The stock is down more than 18% from its highest closing level, reached on March 10.

Shares in Apple Inc. AAPL +0.02% , which is the heaviest-weighted component in both the Nasdaq Composite and the S&P 500, also fell 1.6%.

On the plus side, Questcor Pharmaceuticals Inc. QCOR -0.10% surged 19% after news that Mallinckrodt MNK -2.51%  will buy the drug maker for about $5.6 billion. Read more in the Movers & Shakers column.

In other markets, Asian and European stock markets lost ground Monday. The dollar DXY -0.25%  edged lower, and oil prices fell, with Brent taking the biggest hit on reports that Libya may soon reopen two oil ports. Gold futures dipped and traded below $1,300 an ounce.
