Post No. 3,005 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 17613.68 down 27.16 or 0.15%  from Monday's close of 17640.84. Of the Dow components 11 gained, AT&T was unchanged   and 18  declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was  Visa up 76 cents and percentage-wise was Disney up 0.77. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  was Chevron down $1.68 and percentage-wise was DuPont down 1.71%.

As of the open of  the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Tuesday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.58 down  from yesterday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.65  (last year it was 16.82).  Today's P/E estimate is 15.05 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 15.05 (year ago it was 14.82) and today's dividend yield is 2.46 up from  yesterday's dividend yield of 2.45  (last year it was 2.11). The Dow's all-time high was 18053.71 on December 26,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $91.42 down 15 cents from Monday's  average closing price of $91.57.  The median closing price of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $90.15  (XOM/PG) down 2 cents from Monday's median closing price of $90.17 (WMT/XOM). The lowest volume was   Travelers and the highest volume was GE.

If  Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost  $423  ($274,696 - $274,273).

1/13/15 Tues. 4:49 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova  & Barbara Kollmeyer says
the U.S. stock market ended Tuesday’s volatile session, punctuated by massive triple-digit swings in the key benchmarks, slightly lower. The Dow’s dramatic reversal from a gain of as much as 280 points to big losses reflected the lack of conviction and confidence among investors as crude oil’s unabated slide stoked fears of global deflation. The steep downdraft in stocks came as the market was enjoying a rally Tuesday morning, underpinned by better-than-expected earnings from the industrial bellwether Alcoa, and hopes that ECB is close to providing quantitative easing. The temporary, but significant surge was attributed to mostly short-covering action, especially in exchange traded funds, as traders noted that volumes for individual stocks were light. By late midday, all of the gains in stocks had evaporated and the key indexes were registering losses. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.26%  fell for the third day in a row, with eight of its 10 main industry groupings finishing lower. Materials and energy sector stocks sold off sharply. The index lost 5.22 points, or 0.3%, to 2,023.04.The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.15% dropped about 400 points from its session high, as two-thirds of its components ended with losses. The blue-chip index briefly ventured into positive territory for the year, but was back in the red year-to-date, losing 27.16 points, or 0.2%, to 17,613.68.The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.07%  closed 3.21 points, or 0.1%, at 4,661.50.Meanwhile, implied volatility on the S&P 500, known as Wall Street’ fear gauge as measured by the CBOE Vix VIX, +4.90%   index, spiked above 20, gaining more than 16% over the past two days.Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital, said that Tuesday’s early enthusiasm was due to Alcoa’s better-than-expected results.“Gains evaporated and stocks fell again because commodities, not just oil, keep falling and investors fear that deflation is spreading,” Cardillo said. Volatility on Wall Street is not spooking some strategists.

1/12/15 Mon. 4:44 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova  & Barbara Kollmeyer says
U.S. stocks ended Monday’s session with losses for the second straight trading session, as a renewed assault on oil prices eroded investor confidence ahead of the start of fourth-quarter earnings season.
Energy, technology and financials, which collectively comprise nearly half of the S&P 500, led the losses. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.81%  fell 16.55 points, or 0.8%, to 2,028.26, as nine of 10 main sectors finished lower. Energy sector lost 2.8%, while the technology sector was down 1.3%. Telecoms were the only bright spot, ending 0.6% higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.54% which opened with a 40-point gain, fell as much as 130 points at session lows. The blue-chip index closed down 96.53 points, or 0.5%, at 17,640.84, with more than two-thirds of its 30 components closing in negative territory. Chevron Corp. CVX, -2.15%  and Exxon Mobil Corp. XOM, -1.92%  led losing stocks, both down about 2%.The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.84%  slumped 39.36 points, or 0.8%, to 4,664.71, as big losses in Apple Inc. AAPL, +0.11%   dragged the index lower, in spite of a string of announced mergers and acquisitions among biotechnology companies. Meanwhile, as investors turned away from equities, havens such as government bonds and gold rallied. The 10-year Treasury yield 10_YEAR, +0.00% which moves inversely to prices, fell 3 basis points to 1.91%. Gold prices GCG5, +1.43%  gained $17 to $1,233.Kim Caughey Forrest, investment analyst at Fort Pitt Capital, was not perturbed by the volatility.“Investors are reacting and sometimes overreacting to news, which is how markets are supposed to work. As long-term investors, we were a lot more nervous when markets kept marching in 2013 and 2014,” Forrest said.“Another slide in oil is bad news, because it is indicative of bigger issues in global economy. So, markets will react to that. Long-term investors should pay attention to stocks in their portfolios and periodically evaluate if the story behind why they own the stock is still intact. But for the most part, selling when everyone else is selling is a bad strategy,” she added.John Manley, chief equity strategist at Wells Fargo, noted that the momentum for the fourth-quarter earning expectations has shifted to less positive, as energy companies’ profits will be hit.“Investors are asking questions, like, how can oil fall 50% and not have repercussions, when the price is about 20% below the level at which most energy companies cut their capital expenditures,” Manley said.“However, we still believe that consumer spending, which dwarves capex spending, will benefit from lower oil prices and therefore will be net positive for the economy. We are in a period of higher volatility, but would consider any pullback of 8-12% as a buying opportunity,” he added.
