Post No. 2,991 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 17501.65 down 331.34 or 1.86%  from Friday's close of 17832.99. Of the Dow components only Merck  gained, Coke was unchanged   and 28   declined. The only and therefore the  biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Merck up 85 cents or 1.49%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  was Goldman Sachs down $6.07 and percentage-wise was Caterpillar down 5.28%.

As of the open of  the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Monday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.74 down  from Friday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.88  (last year it was 16.96).  Monday's P/E estimate is 15.61 down from Friday's P/E estimate of 15.93 (year ago it was 14.75) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.43 down from  Friday's dividend yield of 2.41  (last year it was 2.07). The Dow's all-time high was 18053.71 on December 26,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2725.29 down 51.59  from  Friday's   numerator of 2776.88.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $90.84 down $1.72 from Friday's  average closing price of $92.56.  The median closing price of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $90.43  (XOM/AXP) down $2.50 from Friday's median closing price of $92.93 (XOM/AXP). The lowest volume was   Travelers and the highest volume was GE.

If  Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost  $5,159  ($277,688 - $272,529 ).

1/5/15 Mon. 4:08 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says a bout of selling on Wall Street Monday, triggered by a renewed plunge in crude oil prices and surging dollar, left the S&P 500 and the Dow industrials bruised. The S&P 500 SPX, -1.83% closed off session lows but still suffered its worst one-day decline in three months and recorded its longest losing streak in a year, falling for the fourth straight session. The benchmark index lost 37.62 points, or 1.8%, to 2,020.58. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -1.86% also had its worst down day in three months, with 28 of its 30 components closing with losses. The blue-chip index dropped 331.34 points, or 1.9%, to 17,501.65. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -1.57% shed 74.24 points, or 1.6%, to 4,552.57.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Friday at 17832.99 up 9.92 or 0.06%  from Wednesday's close of 179823.07.   For the week the Dow was down 220.72 or 1.22% from last Friday's close of 18053.71. For the year the Dow is up  0.1%. Of the Dow components 14  gained  and 16   declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Visa up $2.82 or 1.08%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  was and percentage-wise was Home Depot down $1.54 or 1.47%.

1/2/15 Fri. 4:08 pm MarketWatch by Victor Reklaitis says U.S. stocks on Friday closed roughly where they started the session, with the S&P 500 SPX, -0.03% inching lower by 0.73 point to 2,058.17, according to early FactSet data. The benchmark index rose as much as 0.7% out of the gate, as 2015's first day of trading started on an upbeat note. But then stocks gave up their early-morning gains following weaker-than-expected readings for construction spending and the Institute for Supply Management's manufacturing index, before recovering to finish essentially flat. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.06% edged up by 9.92 points, or less than 0.1%, to close Friday at 17,832.99, halting a three-day losing streak. For the week, the S&P 500 lost 1.5%, and it's on a three-day losing streak. The Dow dropped 1.2% for the week.
