2/10/15 Tues. 4:40 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova  & Barbara Kollmeyer says
U.S. stocks rallied at the end the day Tuesday, sending the benchmark S&P 500 to its highest close this year, during what was another characteristically volatile day for equities. Investor optimism was fueled by hopes that embattled Greece and its creditors are nearing a compromise to avert a default, even though both sides continued to reiterate statements that suggests an accord is far from imminent.
Earlier in the trading session, European and U.S. equities got a boost after news reports offered hope that the European Commission was considering a six-month debt extension. However, investors remained optimistic even though rumors of an extension were dismissed by Germany’s finance minister Wolfgang Schäuble. The S&P 500 SPX, +1.07%  closed 21.84 points, or 1.1%, higher at 2,068.58 and turned positive for the year. Nine of the 10 main sectors finished higher, while energy-sector stocks ended with modest losses, following a drop in oil prices. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.79%  jumped 139.55 points, or 0.8%, to 17,868.76, with 26 of its 30 member ending with gains. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +1.30%  added 61.63 points, or 1.3%, to 4,787.64, helped by a big gain in Apple, Inc., the heaviest-weighted component in the tech-laden index.
Bill Stone, chief investment strategist at PNC Wealth Management, said optimism about a possible solution to the Greek debt problems was driving markets higher.“News that Greece and the European Union will find a solution before the deadline has spurred some buying. Markets obviously would like to see a deal, rather than a default. But at the same time, the possibility of no deal is also being priced in,” Stone added. In Greece, officials said late Monday that they plan to propose a debt-compromise plan to creditors in Brussels on Wednesday. The country still plans to reject some of the strictest austerity conditions, and the brinkmanship between Greece and its international creditors has been rattling markets for days. However, according to the Wall Street Journal, Greece will proceed with the privatization of the country’s main port. In economic news, small-business sentiment slipped in January on a decline in optimism over sales growth and business conditions, according to a gauge released Tuesday. Separately, job openings in the U.S. rose in December to the highest since 2001 — and the number of people hired climbed to the highest level since 2007, government data showed Tuesday. The report follows last week’s strong jobs report, which showed the economy added 257,000 jobs in January.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 17729.21 down 95.08 or 0.53%  from Friday's close of 17824.29. For the year the Dow is down 0.53%. Of the Dow components 4  gained   and 26  declined. The  biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Caterpillar up $1.96 or 1.63%. The  biggest decliner dollar-wise was Visa down $1.96 and percentage-wise was Walmart down 1.63%.

WSJ pC4 "US stocks hurt by Greek debt impasse" by Dan Strumpf says US stocks were dragged down by a European selloff due to a deepening standoff between Greece and its creditors.  McDonald's fell 1.27 after its monthly sales fell a worse than expected 1.8% in Jan on Asian weakness.

FT p21 "Wall Street" says McDonald's declined more than 1%.

IBD pB3 "Stocks avoid distribution but not out of the woods" by Vincent Mao says due to Greek drama stocks fell for a 2nd straight session Mon in lower trade while the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2760.72 down 14.81 from  Friday's   numerator of 2775.53.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $92.02 down 50 cents  from Friday's  average closing price of $92.52.  The median closing price of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.54  (WMT/NKE) down 88  cents from Friday's median closing price of $89.42 (WMT/XOM.  The lowest volume was Visa  and the highest volume was Intel .

If  Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost  $1,481  ($277,533 - $276,072).

2/9/15 Mon. 4:37 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova  & Barbara Kollmeyer says U.S. stocks ended Monday’s choppy session with modest losses as Wall Street assumed a skittish stance, in the wake of disappointing trade data from China and Greek debt drama. Higher oil prices initially provided a lift to energy stocks, but those gains soon fizzled out, while a jump in CBOE volatility index to 18.70 indicated nervousness among investors. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.42%   closed down 8.73. points, or 0.4%, to 2,046.74, with nine of its main 10 sectors ending with losses. Health care and utility stocks were the top decliners, while energy eked out a small gain. Financials were lower amid reports that the strong dollar could hurt bank balance sheets due to a planned surcharge by U.S. regulators. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.53%  tumbled by triple digits at session lows, but finished with a loss of 95.08 points, or 0.5%, at 17,729.21, with 26 of its 30 components closing lower. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.39%  lost 18.39 points, or 0.4%, to 4,726.01.John Manley, chief equity strategist at Wells Fargo, noted that deterioration in earnings expectations on the backdrop of the rising dollar and deflation fears are behind recent market volatility.“At the moment, forward price-to-earnings ratios are ok, not a reason to buy or to sell. We have to get through earnings malaise and see expectations rise, for markets to go higher,” he added. Colin Cieszynski, chief market analyst at CMC Markets, attributed today’s Wall Street jitters to overseas events, such as trade data from China and Greece’s posturing with the European Central Bank. “There is also a realization that the Fed will raise rates this year. Current volatile environment favors short-term investors, who can take advantage of price swings, while long-term investors are on the sidelines, as valuations are pretty high,” Cieszynski added. Concerns over what will happen to Greece and its debt weighed on markets.Greece’s Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Sunday dismissed the country’s European Union and International Monetary Fund bailouts and said he wouldn’t ask EU leaders for any extension. The country has until Feb. 16 to make the request. The Stoxx Europe 600 SXXP, -0.74%  dropped 1%, and the Greece ASE Composite Index GD, -4.75% slid 6% on Monday.
