The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 17972.38 up 110.24 or 0.62%  from Wednesday's close of 17862.14. Of the Dow components  24 gained   and 6  declined. The  biggest gainer dollar-wise  was Visa up $4.92 and percentage-wise was Cisco up 9.39%. If  Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made  $1,717  ($29,859 - $278,142).

2/12/15 Thurs. 4:32 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova  & Barbara Kollmeyer says
U.S. stocks rallied on Thursday, sending the S&P 500 to its highest close this year and within shouting distance of the record close reached on Dec 29.Optimism stemmed from news of a cease-fire agreement between Russia and Ukraine, a pickup in oil prices and merger news, with gains building throughout the session. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.96%  added 19.95 points, or 1%, to 2,088.48, with eight of its 10 sectors finishing higher. Among them, materials, technology and energy sectors stocks led the gains, while utilities and telecoms were the only laggards. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.62%  jumped 110.24 points, or 0.6%, to 17,972.38, with 24 of its 30 components gaining. Cisco Systems, Inc. was the top gainer, jumping 8.2%, while American Express Company led laggards, falling more than 6%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite COMP, +1.18%  rose to its highest level since 2000, aided a third straight day by a climb in the heaviest-weighted component in the index Apple Inc., which was up 1.2% on the day.Apple has gained 6.3% over the past four days.
James Paulsen, chief investment strategist at Wells Capital Management, said today’s sharp rise follows a pattern of snapbacks since December.“After every pullback, we are snapping back sharply, and I believe that is indicative of ‘buy-the-dip’ mentality, when people are afraid to miss out on the rally. We are seeing too much optimism out there and that’s a concern,” Paulsen said.“This year I would not be surprised to see the S&P 500 go to 2,200 or back to 1,850, but I think we will finish the year flat, as valuations are too high,” he said.Ed Shill, chief investment officer at QCI Asset Management, sounded similarly cautious, saying the fundamentals don't support any further gains.
“We expect 2015 earnings to come below last year’s earnings, so fundamentals don't support current high levels. But there are other forces driving this market, namely money flows, because U.S. stocks are like the best house in a bad neighborhood,” Shill said.“We expect some kind of a tradeable correction this year and that would be best for this market,” he added.News of merger talks between travel companies Expedia, Inc. EXPE, -0.22%  and Orbitz Worldwide OWW, -0.17% which have been discussing a $1.3 billion acquisition, sent both shares sharply higher, up 15% and 22% respectively.

2/11/15 Wed. 4:23 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova  & Barbara Kollmeyer says
after switching between gains and losses, U.S. stocks ended Wednesday’s choppy session essentially flat. Investors remained jittery, amid worries about whether Greece and its creditors will reach an agreement to avoid a debt default. After a choppy session, the S&P 500 index SPX, +0.00%  ended flat at 2,068.53. Four of the 10 main sectors finished higher, with consumer staples and technology stocks leading gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.04%  dropped more than 100 points at session lows but recovered by the end of the day to end flat at 17,862.14, off 6.6 points. The Nasdaq Composite, however, COMP, +0.28% outperformed other indexes and rose 0.4%, to 4,801.18, largely thanks to a 2.3% gain in Apple Inc., its most significant component by weighting.
Headlines about Greece and whether it will leave the eurozone or restructure its debt have been driving markets lately.Greece’s new antiausterity government is meeting with eurozone finance ministers in Brussels, but few expect any deal to be reached today.Wall Street rallied on Tuesday on rumors that Greece could get a six-month extension to its bailout program. However, speculation was quashed quickly by German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble. Greece’s current bailout plan expires on Feb. 28, and some fear it will run out of money before then. Channing Smith, portfolio manager at Capital Advisors, expects markets to tread water, while headlines from Greece dominate the general mood on Wall Street.“The earnings season is almost behind us and outlooks have been pretty disappointing. Assuming the U.S. economic growth remains at 2%-2.5%, it is difficult to argue that corporations will be able to keep expanding margins, the way they did in the latest reported quarter,” Smith said.Speaking about valuations, Smith noted that at current prices stocks are expensive, even in the beaten down energy sector. “Investors are faced with above-average risk and below-average returns at current valuations. Even in the energy sector, we are still not finding enough value given the risks. We don’t know if the oil price recovery will be V-shaped or U-shaped and that will determine what cash flows and earnings will look like,” he added.
