Post No. 3,067 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 18209.19 UP 92.35 OR 0.51% from Monday's close of 18116.84. Of the Dow components  22  gained, Cisco was unchanged   and   7 declined. The  biggest gainer dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Home Depot up $4.47 or 3.98%. The  biggest decliner dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was UnitedHealth down 97 cents or 0.83%.

As of the open of  the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Tuesday's trailing P/E   ratio is 17.06 unchanged  from yesterday's   trailing P/E ratio of 17.06 (last year it was 15.94).  Today's P/E estimate is 16.68 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 16.68 (year ago it was 14.50) and  today's dividend yield is 2.47 up from  yesterday's dividend yield of 2.21  (last year it was 2.20). The Dow's all-time high was 18209.19 on February 24,  2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2835.46 up 14.38  from  Monday's   numerator of 2821.08.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $94.52 up 48  cents  from Monday's  average closing price of $94.04.  The median closing price of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $87.46  (PG/XOM) up 26 cents from Monday's median closing price of $87.20 (PG/XOM).  The lowest volume was Travelers  and the highest volume was GE.

If  Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,438  ($283,546 - $282,108).

2/24/15 Tues. 4:40 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova  & Victor Reklaitis says U.S. stocks moved higher Tuesday, with the S&P 500 and Dow industrials closing at records, as the market read Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen’s testimony before Congress as a reassurance that a rate hike might not occur until the second half of the year. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.28%  finished up by 5.82 points, or 0.3%, at 2,115.48, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.51% gained 92.35 points, or 0.5%, to end at 18,209.19. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.14%  added 7.15 points, or 0.1%, to end at 4,968.12, leaving it just 1.6% off its March 2000 peak. The tech-heavy index advanced for the 10th session in a row, scoring its longest winning streak since mid-2009, when it rose for 12 straight days.Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial, said the market reaction to Yellen’s testimony indicated that her comments were perceived as dovish.“The 10-year yields fell, the dollar gave up gains and stocks rose, even though those moves were not huge. At this point, just as the Fed is data-dependent, markets are data-dependent, too,” Krosby said.
“Today’s Janet Yellen is the same Yellen who in 1994 warned Alan Greenspan to be careful about raising rates too soon and too fast. The Fed needs to see more evidence that the economy is truly on a viable trajectory before beginning to normalize interest rates,” she said. “They would not want to be in a position where they would have to cut rates shortly after the first hike,” she added. Kevin Mahn, chief investment officer at Hennion & Walsh Asset Management, argued that investors are no longer looking for the Fed’s direction.“Janet Yellen and the Fed have not changed their view on policy. Last year Yellen said that rate hikes would probably start about six months after the end of the tapering process. Six months from the end of taper in October puts the rate hike schedule for spring and that’s the message from her today,” Mahn said.“We believe a 25 basis point increase sometime between April and June is very likely and the markets will take it in stride,” Mahn said.Individual movers & shakers: Shares in First Solar Inc. FSLR, -0.42%  finished 10.2% higher for the biggest daily gain among S&P 500 components. First Solar and SunPower Corp. SPWR, +17.99% said late Monday that they plan an initial public offering for a pooled-asset spinoff.Home Depot Inc. HD, +3.98%  shares climbed 4% for the best performance among Dow stocks after the retailer’s quarterly results topped expectations.Other markets: European stocks SXXP, +0.56%  gained, with the Athens Composite Index GD, +9.81%  surging, after initial comments on Greece’s reform proposal from European officials pointed to the approval of a four-month bailout extension. In Asia, the Nikkei 225 NIK, +0.74%  nabbed a fresh 15-year high. The dollar DXY, -0.09%   was lower after giving up gains.Crude-oil prices CLJ5, -0.59%  ended slightly lower, while gold GCJ5, +0.00% also remained under pressure.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 18116.84 down 23.6 or 0.13% from Friday's close of 18140.44. For the year the Dow is up 1.65%. Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2821.08 down 3.67  from  Friday's   numerator of 2824.75.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

2/23/15 Mon. 4:40 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova  & Barbara Kollmeyer says
U.S. stocks ended Monday’s choppy session roughly where they started it, as a late-afternoon rebound helped pare early losses. A drop in oil prices weighed on energy companies. Meanwhile, a pickup in merger-and-acquisition activity in the pharmaceutical industry helped push health-care stocks slightly higher. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.10%  ended the session 5 points, or 0.1%, higher at 4,960, helped in large by a 2.7% jump in Apple, Inc. AAPL, +2.71%   Monday’s gain is the tech-heavy index’s ninth in a row. The last time the index rose for this long was in September 2010, according to FactSet. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.03%  closed flat at 2,109.66. Monday’s trade was skewed toward defensive plays, as investors preferred utilities and health-care stocks, while staying away from telecoms, energy and consumer discretionary companies. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.13%  retreated from a record close notched on Friday. The blue-chip index slipped 23.54 points, or 0.1%, to 18,116.90. More than half of its 30 members finished lower. Boeing Co. BA, -2.26%   was the biggest decliner, while UnitedHealth Group Inc. UNH, +3.36%   led gainers.
David O’Malley, chief executive officer at Penn Mutual Asset Management, said geopolitical news has tended to dictate market direction at the open, with money flows then pushing stocks higher in afternoon trading.“There is a 180-degree shift in sentiment in all markets. In January, investors were worried the U.S. will have deflationary problems, but the Fed eased fears with [reassurances] to be patient and data-dependent while money is pouring into equity funds,” O’Malley said.
Steven Wieting, global chief investment strategist at Citi Private Bank, said investors are waiting to see the positive economic effects of falling oil prices.“We have seen immediate effects of lower oil prices in reduced earnings and cuts in capital expenditures by energy companies, but consumers are not spending their windfall just yet,” Wieting said.
