4/10/15 Fri. 4:46 pm MarketWatch by  Anora Mahmudova and Sara Sjolin says U.S. stocks ended the session higher on Friday, with the main benchmarks booking their second straight weekly gain.
Friday’s advance came as General Electric Co. surged 11% following an announcement of a comprehensive restructuring plan and a hefty stock repurchases. GE’s surge helped push the Dow Industrials above 18,000 level for the first time in nearly three weeks. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.52%  closed 10.88 points, or 0.5%, higher at 2,102.05 and recorded a 1.7% gain over the week. The tech-heavy index is less than a percentage point away from the 5,000 level.Rallies in Asia and Europe set the tone for U.S. markets, said Chris Gaffney, president of EverBank World Markets.“Markets have been trading in a tight range the whole week as the focus shifted to earnings,” Gaffney said. “The drop in earnings is already priced in. While we expect companies to beat already lowered expectations, forward guidance will be more important,” Gaffney said.Gaffney cautioned that valuations are at the higher end of the spectrum, which he said calls for diversification into international markets.Lacker’s speech: Richmond Fed President Jeffrey Lacker, a voting member of the Federal Open Market Committee, in a speech reiterated his case for June hike.“In current circumstances, raising the funds rate target a notch or two is less like taking away the punch bowl and more like just slowing down the refills. We will still be spiking the punch—just not quite as rapidly as we have been,” Lacker said.

NYT pB6 "Oil gains steady market, but earnings may be rocky" & AJC pA15 "Oil prices help boost stocks" by AP says US stocks edged higher Thurs led by gains for energy firms as the price of oil stabilized following a big drop the day before.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2691.28 up 18.43  from Wednesday's average numerator of 2682.85.   This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. 4/9/15 Thurs. 4:46 pm MarketWatch by Wallace Witkowski & William Watts says U.S. stocks ended Thursday’s choppy trading session with modest gains helped by a rally in energy and health-care sectors. The main benchmarks have advanced in four of the past five sessions. The main indexes moved in tight ranges, however, as worries about a drop in quarterly earning continued to haunt investors, keeping some on the sidelines. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.45%  closed up 9.28 points, or 0.4%, at 2,091.18. Energy sectors stock rallied thanks to a rebound in oil prices. Meanwhile, eight of the 10 main sectors on the index finished the day with gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.31%  added 56.28 points, or 0.3%, to 17,958.79, with more than two-thirds of its components ending higher. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.48%  ended the session up 23.74 points, or 0.5%, to 4,974.56.Mike Baele, senior portfolio manager at Private Client Reserve at U.S. Bank Wealth Management, said stocks may be the best game in town.“Earnings estimates came down and valuations are on a high side, but we still think that equities are attractive relative to other assets,” said Baele.“In the next few weeks, investors will pay a lot of attention to forward guidance from companies as they beat the lowered threshold,” he said, warning that outside risks, such as Europe’s currency problems and conflict involving Russia and Ukraine, pose bigger risks than domestic growth.FOMC reaction: Investors were still digesting the minutes from the latest FOMC meeting, released on Wednesday, which showed several members supported a June rate hike, but also that others thought a rate hike wouldn't be warranted until later in the year, as low oil prices and the strong dollar would likely hold inflation down. U.S. stock markets ended the Wednesday session slightly higher after the minutes.“What has been taken as dovish FOMC minutes didn’t really shed any new light on the path for interest rates. June has looked unlikely for a while now, and any month beyond that will depend on the data,” said Craig Erlam, senior market analyst at forex broker Oanda, in emailed comments. Data: The number of Americans filing for initial unemployment benefits rose by less than expected, while the rate of layoffs remained historically low. Meanwhile, wholesale inventories edged up, as sales fell, in a sign that demand over the winter slowed down.Stocks to watch: Shares of Alcoa Inc. AA, -0.38%  lost 3.4% after the aluminum maker late Wednesday reported revenue that missed forecasts and pointed to a challenging outlook. Zynga Inc. ZNGA, +0.42%  tanked 18% to $2.38 a share after the videogame maker late Wednesday said chief executive Don Mattrick will leave the company effective April 8, to be replaced by founder and chairman Mark Pincus. U.S.-listed shares of Novogen Ltd. NVGN, +3.26%  surged 22% to $5.52 after the Australian biotech company said its experimental drug Anisina was shown to kill melanoma cells.
