Post No. 3,142 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Thursday's  Wall Street Journal, Financial Times,  Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution  & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 18112.61 up 0.42%  from Tuesday's close of 18036.70. For the year the Dow is up 1.62%. Of the Dow components 21  gained  and 9 declined. The  biggest gainer dollar-wise  was Goldman Sachs up $3.38 and percentage-wise was Intel up 4.26%. The  biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was UnitedHealth down 42.60 or 2.17 %.

WSJ pC4 "Rally sends small caps to a record" by Saumya Vaishampayan says US stocks rallied, pushing the Russell 2000 to a record high.  Intel jumped $1.34 as it reported a 3% rise I n net income and is charted under good news.  Oil prices were up and Exxon and Chevron were big gainers.

IBD pB3 "Market rallies broadly; vol up: utilities lag" by David Saito-Chung says Wednesday's action saw broad gains in higher vol while the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.

NYT pB7 "Higher profits and oil prices give market a modest lift" & AJC pA16 "Investors find good news" by AP says rising corp profits & a jump in oil prices pushed the market to a modest gain Wed.

As of the open of  the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.14985889030177.  Thursday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.53 up  from Wednesday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.46 (last year it was 16.15).  Today's P/E estimate is 16.28 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 16.28 (year ago it was 14.53) and  today's dividend yield is 2.24 down from  yesterday's dividend yield of 2.25  (last year it was 2.17). The Dow's all-time high was 18288.63 on March 2,  2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2714.34  up 11.38 from Tuesday's average numerator of 2702.96.   This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14985889030177) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67  change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $90.48 up 38 cents from Tuesday's closing average of $90.10.  The median closing price of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.62 (CAT/XOM) up $1.51 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $85.11 (PG/XOM).  The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume was Intel.

If  Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,138  ($271,434 - $270,296).

4/15/15 Wed. 4:28 pm MarketWatch by  Anora Mahmudova and Sara Sjolin says Wednesday’s gains on Wall Street sent key U.S. stock indexes close to record levels, as better-than-expected earnings and a jump in oil prices invigorated stock market bulls.Small-cap stocks led the rally, with the Russell 2000 closing at a fresh record. Broadly, investors appeared to have brushed off weaker-than-expected economic reports, while the ECB’s success rolling out its quantitative-easing program over the past month has provided a favorable backdrop for global stocks. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.51%  closed 10.78 points, or 0.5%, higher at 2,106.62, within striking distance from the record level reached in March. Energy stocks rallied more than 2% following a nearly 6% jump by crude-oil futures, which settled at the highest level this year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.42%  added 75.71 points, or 0.4%, to 18,112.41, wit more than two-thirds of its 30 components finishing with gains. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.68%  ended the session up 33.73 points, or 0.7%, to 5,011.02.James Abate, chief investment officer at Centre Funds, with over $1 billion in assets under management, said companies so far are beating or meeting lowered expectations, driving bullish sentiment.“The main reason equity markets are inching higher in an environment where the economic growth is decelerating and earnings falling, is because of monetary policy of abundant liquidity from the ECB, Bank of Japan and even the Federal Reserve,” Abate said.“So far in the earnings season, 35 of 37 companies on the S&P 500 either beat or met expectations,” Abate said. Most estimates for quarterly results had been lowered heading into this earnings period, Abate noted. “Companies have become very adept at boosting their earnings per share by cutting cost, managing taxes and share buybacks,” he said.Investors also dismissed weaker-than-expected manufacturing data released ahead of the opening bell.In economic news, the Empire State manufacturing index plunged, falling to a negative reading, while, industrial production fell by more than expected in March. Both reports suggested a deceleration in economic growth. Meanwhile, a gauge of confidence among home builders rose in April, according to the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo housing-market index released Wednesday.
