Post No. 3,120 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 17763.24 up 65.06 or 0.37%  from Wednesday's close of 17698.18.  Of the Dow components  22  gained, 2 were unchanged  and 6   declined. The  biggest gainer dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Home Depot up $1.41 or 1.25%. The  biggest decliner dollar-wise was   Goldman Sachs down 68 cents and percentage-wise was  Microsoft down 1.06%.

As of the open of  the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.14985889030177.  Thursday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.16 down  from yesterday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.23 (last year it was 16.30).  Today's P/E estimate is 16.07 down from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 16.30 (year ago it was 14.74) and  today's dividend yield is 2.31 up from  yesterday's dividend yield of 2.28  (last year it was 2.15). The Dow's all-time high was 18288.63 on March 2,  2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2661.98 up 9.75  from Wednesday's average numerator of 2652.23.   This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14985889030177) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67  change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.73  up  32 cents from Wednesday's closing average of $88.41.  The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $83.46 (PG/XOM) up 7 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $83.39 (PG/XOM).  The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Microsoft.

If  Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made  $975 ($266,198 - $265,223).

4/2//15 Thurs. 4:36 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Sara Sjolin says U.S. stocks finished the Easter-shortened week with modest gains after benchmarks advanced slightly on Thursday. The session’s upward momentum was supported by better-than-expected jobless claims, which pointed to continued strength in the labor market, setting the stage for Friday’s closely watched nonfarm payrolls. U.S. stock markets are closed for Good Friday and investors won't get a chance to react to the highly anticipated jobs report until Monday, but there might be some hints at what the market thinks reflected in futures, which are briefly open. On, Thursday, however, the S&P 500 SPX, +0.35%  closed up 7.27 points, or 0.4% at 2,066.96 and booked a 0.3% gain for the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.37%  added 65.06 points, or 0.4%, to 17,763.24, gaining 0.3% over the week. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.14%   ended the session up 6.71 points, or 0.1%, to 4,886.94, but was 0.1% lower for the week.Michael Arone, chief investment strategist at State Street Global Advisors, expects the jobs gains to come in slightly below the consensus estimate of 245,000. “The details of the jobs report such as average hourly earnings and wage growth will be far more important for the Fed than the headline number,” Arone said. “The Fed is comfortable with the labor market and it’s the enigma with the inflation that is making their jobs challenging,” Arone added.    Paul Vigna and Ed Campbell discuss wage growth in the U.S. economy, and Drew FitzGerald looks at the new, old RadioShack.Sandy Lincoln, chief markets strategist at BMO Global Asset Management, said he is optimistic about equities at this point. But he cautioned that there are no cheap assets. “Equities are not cheap, but fairly valued, while bonds are expensive,” he said.Thursday’s data: Initial jobless claims for the week ended March 28 fell by 20,000 to a seasonally adjusted 268,000, the levels last seen 15 years ago, the government agency said. The number is far below the forecasts by economists polled by MarketWatch. The U.S. trade deficit sank 17% in February to the lowest level since 2009, largely because of cheaper oil, but exports also fell to a 2½ year low in a sign that a stronger dollar and a weak global economy are hurting American companies. Also, Factory orders for February ticked up 0.2%.Stocks to watch: CarMax Inc. KMX, -0.37%  shares jumped 9.3% after the company reported on Thursday that its fourth-quarter profits surged 44%, as sales remained strong for the used-car retailer. The stock was the best performer on the S&P 500.Its rival AutoNation Inc. AN, +0.05%   shares rose 1.1% after sales jumped 10%.
Google Inc. GOOG, -0.03% GOOGL, +0.13%  shares fell 1.3%, after news reports that the Europe’s competition regulators is preparing to move against the search giant in the next few weeks. Other markets: European stocks ended mostly lower as investors there were also wary ahead of the long weekend and nonfarm payrolls. Most European stock markets are closed on Friday and Monday. Asia markets closed sharply higher for the most part. Oil futures fell on Thursday amid market expectations that the agreement on Iran’s nuclear program will lead to more oil on the world market.
Gold futures settled lower, down 0.6% at $1,200.90 as a better-than-expected reading on jobless claims dented haven demand for the precious metal.

4/1//15 Wed. 4:43 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Sara Sjolin says April Fools’ Day, indeed. U.S. stocks kicked off the month, and the start of the second quarter, on a sour note, with the main benchmarks ending Wednesday’s session with modest losses as a batch of weaker-than-expected economic reports further eroded confidence.Futures were already pointing to weakness earlier in the session as Asian markets tumbled, U.S. stocks turned lower after private-sector job gains came in weaker than expected. A larger-than-forecast drop in ISM manufacturing index also suggested the U.S. economy is weakening.Jeffrey Saut, chief investment strategist at Raymond James, noted that the stock market hasn't felt confident about the economy since November.
“At the moments there are too many indicators that seem to point to being patient and wait until fundamentals improve. There is internal deterioration, softening economy and falling earnings expectations. It is difficult to be patient, but that’s exactly what investors should be,” Saut said.
Patience was certainly not on display as the S&P 500 SPX, -0.40%   closed 8.20 points, or 0.4%, lower at 2,059.69. The benchmark index closed below a key technical level, with some analysts suggesting the index is vulnerable to further declines. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.44%  dropped as much as 190 points in early trade, but recovered some of the losses to end the session 77.94 points, or 0.4%, lower at 17,698.18. More than two-thirds of the 30 components on the average closed lower. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.42%  ended the session down 20.66 points, or 0.4%, to 4,880.23. While equities markets pushed through several record milestones in the first quarter, are low interest rates (plus a possible U.S. rate hike) and low oil prices likely to keep the party going on Wall Street and overseas? Randy Frederick, managing director of trading and derivatives at the Schwab Center for Financial Research, noted that the market has been extremely difficult to predict.“Looking at our open put/call ratios and Vix, those indicators are neither bullish, nor bearish, as they are not at extreme levels,” Frederick said, adding that long investors may need to tune out the short-term noise of stock fluctuations    U.S. stocks fell Tuesday, pulling back after two sessions of gains and putting the Dow Jones Industrial Average on track for a decline in the first quarter. Charter Communications agreed to acquire Bright House Networks for $10.4 billion.
Data: Private-sector employment gains continued in March but at a slower pace than in the prior month. Employers added 189,000 jobs last month, Automatic Data Processing Inc. reported Wednesday. Separately, U.S. manufacturers grew at the slowest pace in March in almost two years and employment levels also weakened, according to the The Institute for Supply Management’s survey. Outlays for U.S. construction projects decreased 0.1% in February to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $967.2 billion.Stocks to watch: Shares of GoDaddy Inc. GDDY, -0.57%   jumped 31% in its IPO debut.Shares of major airline companies took a hit after downgrades by Deutsche Bank.Delta Air Lines DAL, +0.07% and American Airlines Group AAL, +0.24%  fell 3.8% and 4.4% respectively.Sarepta Therapeutics Inc. SRPT, +0.14%  shares rallied 7.6% after the biotech firm appointed Edward Kaye as interim CEO with immediate effect and said it is pushing ahead with regulatory and clinical work needed to gain approval for its lead product candidate. Other markets: U.S. Treasuries rallied today, sending the yield on the 10-year note down seven basis points to 1.87%, following weak ADP and ISM data. Oil CLK5, -1.24%  settled with biggest gain in two months, gaining $2.49 or 5.2% to $50.09 a barrel. Gold GCM5, -0.36%  bounced back after two days of losses to settle 2.1% higher at $1,208.20. European stocks finished with modest gains, with the benchmark STOXX SXXP, +0.31%  gaining 0.3%. Asian stock markets closed mixed, with China’s benchmark Shanghai Composite Index SHCOMP, +1.66%  ending above 3,800 for the first time since 2008.
