Post No. 3,214 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 6/9/15 and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings as of 6/9/15.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 17904.48 up 113.31 or 0.64%  from Monday's close of 17791.17. Of the 30   Dow components 1  gained, Pfizer was unchanged  and 28  declined.  The  biggest gainer dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs up $1.80  and percentage-wise was UnitedHealth up 2.16%. The  only and therefore biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Caterpillar down 54 cents or 0.62%.

As of the open of  the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.14985889030177.  Tuesday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.11 down from Monday's   trailing P/E ratio of  16.20 (last year it was 16.41).  Tuesday's P/E estimate is 16.12 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 16.12 (year ago it was 15.00) and  Tuesday's dividend yield is  2.374 down from Monday's dividend yield of  2.37 (last year it was 2.18). The Dow's all-time high was 18312.39 on May 19,  2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2683.15 up 16.99  from Monday's average numerator of 2666.16.   This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14985889030177) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67  change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $89.44 up 57 cents  from Monday's closing average of $88.87  The median closing price of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.63 (XOM/CAT) up 21 cents  from Monday's median closing price of $85.42 (XOM/CAT).  The lowest volume was Travelers  and the highest volume was Apple.

If  Tuesday   morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,699 ($268,315 - $266,616).

6/16/15 Tues. 4:23 pm MarketWatch by  Anora Mahmudova, Sara Sjolin & Victor Reklaitis says
U.S. stocks closed higher on Tuesday, as investors shrugged off worries about unsuccessful Greek debt talks and awaited the outcome of a two-day Federal Reserve policy meeting which concludes on Wednesday. The stock market appeared to find support in stronger-than-expected data for building permits. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.57%  added 11.86 points, or 0.6%, to 2,096.29, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.64% gained 113.31 points, or 0.6%, to 17,8904.48. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.51%  rose 25.58 points, or 0.5% to 5,055.55.J.J. Kinahan, chief strategist at TD Ameritrade, said the grind higher amid low volumes is indicative of cautious trading.
“At this point, there is very little upside in taking risk, or buying large long positions going into the Fed day. Investors have continued a pattern of ‘taking off risk’, as markets held major support levels” Kinahan said.“We do not expect to see sharp moves even after the Fed meeting tomorrow, but expect more volatility by the end of the weekend as it’s an options expiration day on Friday,” he said. The Federal Open Market Committee’s two-day meeting kicked off Tuesday. Fed Chairwoman Janet Yellen will hold a news conference after the meeting concludes on Wednesday. Michael Antonelli, equity sales trader at R.W Baird & Co, said Fed policy remains the main market driver.“Markets hate uncertainty and at this point they would like clarity about the impending interest-rate hikes and some kind of resolution to Greece’s debt crisis,” Antonelli said. “While any initial interest-rate hike will hit markets in the near term, ultimately it would be good for the market to move past that and find its direction,” he added. Greece remained in the news on Tuesday, however, U.S. stock investors brushed off earlier concerns that the heavily indebted country could default unless it reaches a deal with lenders later this week.Tuesday’s key economic news: Construction started on new U.S. homes fell 11.1% to an annual rate of 1.04 million in May, pulling back from a surge in April and missing expectations. But the annual pace of permits for new construction, a sign of future demand, rose 11.8% to 1.28 million, the fastest pace since August 2007. One analyst described the upbeat reading for planned projects as “shockingly large.” Movers and shakers: Aetna Inc AET, +3.27%  was among the S&P 500’s biggest gainers, rising 3.3% after UnitedHealth Group Inc. UNH, +2.16% approached the rival insurance company about a takeover deal. The latest move follows a frenzy of merger talk in the health-insurance industry. UnitedHealth shares rose 2.2%.United Rentals, Inc. URI, -2.61%  was the S&P’s biggest decliner after Macquarie downgraded the stock to underperform with a price target of $80. Shares fell 2.6%.Other markets: European stocks closed higher after sliding earlier in the session. Greek worries persisted, but equities have recovered a little after hitting a nearly four-month low.Oil prices CLN5, +0.07%  snapped a four-day losing streak and settled 0.8% higher at $59.97 a barrel. Gold futures GCQ5, -0.08%  settled 0.4% lower at $1,180.90 an ounce.
The ICE dollar index DXY, +0.02%  rose, as the U.S. currency logged gains against almost all other major currencies.

6/15/15 Mon. 4:25 pm MarketWatch by  Anora Mahmudova & Barbara Kollmeyer Sjolin says
U.S. stocks finished broadly lower Monday, beginning the week on a downbeat note Monday after the collapse of weekend talks over Greece’s bailout plan and disappointing economic data. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.46% declined 9.68 points, or 0.5%, to close at 2,084.43. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.60%  had dropped nearly 200 points in early trade, but pared losses to close 107.67 points lower, a loss of 0.6%, at 17,791.17. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.42%  fell 21.13` points, or 0.4%, to 5,029.97.A New York-area manufacturing survey came in well below expectations, with the index dropping to a negative 2.0 in June, while economists polled by MarketWatch expected a reading of 5.7. Industrial production in May also dipped. Earlier, stock futures were keeping pace with European equities, which fell sharply as talks between Greece and its international creditors collapsed over the weekend, reigniting fears that Greece may default on its debts and potentially exit the eurozone.“Rallies have been relatively short-lived, however, pullbacks have also held above technical levels. This suggests that it’s too early to jump the gun in deciding which way the market goes next,” said Frank Cappelleri, executive director of Institutional Sales and Trading at Instinet. “If small and midcap stocks rally to new highs, large-caps will follow. But in the meantime, sideways trade is the most likely outcome for weeks to come,” he added.Phil Orlando, chief equity strategist at Federated Investors, highlighted three major issues that potentially can result in a market correction of 5%-10% over the summer.“But in the near term, markets are very much driven by news in Greece, the Federal Reserve policy setting meeting this week and potential collapse of Iranian nuclear negotiations. These three issues together could result in an air pocket this summer,” Orlando warned. The oil-rich Muslim kingdom allows global investors to buy shares listed on its stock exchange for the first time.In economic data, following disappointing Empire State manufacturing index, more negative news came in the form of industrial production, which fell a seasonally adjusted 0.2% in May. On the bright side, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) home builders’ index, a gauge of confidence among U.S. home builders, for June rose five points to 59, representing a nine-month high.Stocks to watch: Standard Pacific Corp. SPF, +5.62%  and Ryland Group Inc. RYL, +5.21%  announced a $5.2 billion merger deal to create the fourth-largest U.S. home builder. Standard rose 5.6%.After briefly being halted, shares of Cigna Corp. CI, +11.74% soared Monday as The Wall Street Journal reported that Anthem Inc. ANTM, +2.33%  made a bid to purchase the rival insurer. Anthem shares also traded higher.Greece-worry redux: Losses for the Stoxx Europe 600 SXXP, -1.63% weighed on stock futures. European stocks fell more than 1%, as Greece’s Athens Composite GD, -4.68%  sank 5% and the yield on Greece’s 10-year bond hit 12%, a level not seen since April. The euro EURUSD, -0.0266%  briefly dipped below $1.12 in Asian trading, but turned higher versus the dollar in later activity. Oil prices CLN5, -0.55%  trimmed losses as the dollar weakened, while gold prices GCN5, +0.54%  posted moderate gains. In Asia, stocks pulled back across the board, with the Shanghai Composite Index SHCOMP, -2.00%  dropping 2%. The Nikkei 225 index NIK, -0.09%  finished flat.
