6/8/15 Mon. 4:51 pm MarketWatch by  Anora Mahmudova & Barbara Kollmeyer says
U.S. stocks declined on Monday, with the tech stocks leading the market lower. The slump in the main stock-market indexes marked the third consecutive session, with the Dow industrials erasing year-to-date gains. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.65%  fell 13.55 points, or 0.7% to 2,079.28, as technology stocks led the declines. The benchmark index is down more than 2% from its peak reached on May 21. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.46% lost 82.91 points, or 0.5% to 17,766.55 and turned negative for the year. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.92%  declined 46.83 points, or 0.9%, to 5,021.63.Airline company stocks were among the big losers on the day after analysts at Raymond James cut their ratings and earnings forecasts. American Airlines Group Inc. AAL, -4.46% was down 4.5%, while Delta Air Lines Inc. DAL, -5.01% fell 5% and Southwest Airlines LUV, -2.85% declined 2.9%.Monday’s slump comes after upbeat jobs data released Friday raised concerns that an interest-rate hike this autumn is a possibility. The rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee meets June 16-17.Bruce McCain, chief investment strategist at Key Private Bank, noted that the market reaction to the strong jobs report suggested investors would prefer low rates rather than a stronger economy. “There is a fear of the unknown, with people realizing that interest rates are not going to stay low forever. So, markets may stay range-bound and affected by good news for the rest of this year,” McCain said.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 17849.46 down 56.12 or 0.31%  from Thursday's close of 17905.58. For the week the Dow was down 161.22 or 0.89% from last Friday's close of 18010.68. The  biggest decliner dollar-wise was 3M down $1.27 and percentage-wise was Verizon down 1.81%.

IBD pB8 "Stocks shrug off Greece, OPEC to stage positive price reversal" by Paul Whitfield says Friday's action was mixed in rising vol while the current outlook is confirmed uptrend.  This week the 4 day Apple Worldwide conference takes place in San Fran.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2674.90 down 8.41 from Thursday's average numerator of 2683.31.   This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14985889030177) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67  change in the Dow Index.

6/5/15 Fri. 4:48 pm MarketWatch by  Victor Reklaitis & Barbara Kollmeyer says The U.S. stock market finished mostly lower Friday as an upbeat jobs report raised expectations for an interest-rate hike this fall. But the main indexes ended off their session lows as the economic strength signaled by the jobs report somewhat offset concerns about a rate hike, which would lure some investors out of stocks and increase companies’ borrowing costs. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.14%  slipped by 3.01 points, or 0.1%, to finish at 2,092.83 after being down as much as 0.5% in morning action, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.31%  fell by 56.12 points, or 0.3%, to 17,849.46. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.18%  showed a slight spark, rising 9.33 points, or 0.2%, to end at 5,068.46.For the week, the S&P 500 and Dow lost 0.7% and 0.9%, respectively, while the Nasdaq dipped less than 0.1%. The S&P stands at its lowest level since May 7 after falling for two weeks in a row. The benchmark index has trimmed its year-to-date gain to 1.7%.The Labor Department said the U.S. economy generated 280,000 new jobs in May, beating the gain of 210,000 that was expected by economists polled by MarketWatch. The unemployment rate edged up to 5.5%, but mainly because more Americans entered the labor force in search of work.Although a positive for the broader economy, the strong jobs report has traders fearing that the days of ultraloose monetary policy are coming to an end as a rate hike appears imminent.“This would indicate that the Fed is more likely to raise rates sooner rather than later,” said State Street Global Advisors’ chief investment strategist, Michael Arone, who described the overall report as “solid.” He said the stock market “continues to be in love with lower for longer” when it comes to interest rates, but that’s somewhat “confounding,” as Friday’s upbeat jobs report “should in aggregate be a good thing” for both the U.S. economy and the stock market.Investors also digested New York Federal Reserve President William Dudley’s comment that a rate hike is still likely this year.Greek stress: European stocks SXXP, -0.93%  closed lower after Greece opted to bundle its June loan payments to the International Monetary Fund and make them at the end of the month, and the country and its creditors continued to struggle over a deal to unlock bailout funds. The yield on Greece’s 10-year bond jumped, while the yield on the German bund also climbed.“The markets do appear to think a deal will be reached, but until it is, we will see choppy trading off the back of ongoing updates,” said Nour Al-Hammoury, chief market strategist at ADS Securities in Abu Dhabi, in a note. OPEC stands firm: Crude-oil futures CLN5, +1.52%  settled higher, as a drop in the number of U.S. rigs offset a move by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries to keep its output unchanged. In Asia, the Shanghai Composite SHCOMP, +1.54%  closed up 1.5% and topped 5,000, reaching its highest level since January 2008 in a week of sharp volatility for Chinese stocks.Treasury yields and the dollar DXY, +0.80%  both jumped.Individual movers and shakers: J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. JPM, +1.64%  finished up 1.6% for the biggest gain among Dow components, as financial stocks XLF, +0.57%  advanced on expectations that they’ll benefit from higher interest rates. Verizon Communications Inc. VZ, -1.81%  closed down 1.8% for the biggest drop in the Dow. The prospect of higher interest rates weighed on so-called bond proxies—meaning dividend-paying telecom and utilities XLU, -1.25% stocks.
