A read of Friday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Thursday's stock prices and related data.
Dow:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 10,320.1 up 50.63 or 0.49% from Wednesday's close of 10,269.47. For the year the Dow is down 1.04%. WSJ pC7 "Home Depot, Disney help lift blue chips" by Donna Yesalavich says stocks rose with consumer firms including Home Depot, Disney and Walmart leading the gains, following better than expected readings from the housing & retail sectors. Home Depot jumped 74 cents as it got a boost from an unexpected rise in pending home sales as well as a bigger thane expected gain in retailer's same store sale. Also benefiting from improved sentiment on consumer stocks after the reports, Disney rose 40 cents and Walmart rose 56 cents. Hewlett Packard climbed 47 cents as it won the war for 3Par. IBM kept the Dow's gains in check with a drop of 73 cents as investors worried whether HP's deal to buy 3Par might help it better compete with IBM. 3Par is charted under Good News because of the HP buyout.
WSJ pC1 "Dow gain of 50.63 is third in a row" by Jonathan Cheng says stocks mounted an afternoon rally to close near the day's highs as investors awaited jobs data for more guidance on the fragile economic recovery.
Fin Times p22 "Retailers provide uplift amid positive economic figures" by Hannah Kuchler says US stocks rose Thur after slightly better than expected data on initial jobless claims, pending home sales and retailers' same store sales boosted investor confidence.
NYT pB6 "Shares rise on news of jobs & housing" by AP says stocks rose Thurs, extending their gains from the day before, after reports on housing, manufacturing and jobs all indicated that the economy continued to grow.
USA Today p4B "Economic reports push stocks higher" by AP says stocks rose Thurs, extending their gains from Wed after reports on housing, manufacturing and jobs all indicated that the economy continues to grow.
As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493, the trailing P/E ratio is 13.92 up from Thursday's 13.86 (year ago it was 15.08) the P/E estimate is 12.02 unchanged from Thursday's 12.02 (year ago it was 15.08) and the current dividend yield is 2.72 down from Thursday's 2.74 (it was 3.03 a year ago). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,363.59 up 6.70 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,356.89. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase of 6.70 for Thursday by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in Thursday's Dow of 50.63. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $45.45 up 0.22 from Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $44.23. The median closing price of Thurday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $40.28 (AXP/HPQ) up 0.14 from Wednesday's Dow Jones median price of $40.14. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $81.87 +0.86 1.06% 2,473,875 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $13.28 +0.0725 0.55% 128,227,811 NYSE.
If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $670 ($136,359 -$135,689).
MarketWatch 9/2/10 Thursday 2:24 pm by Donna Yesalavich says U.S. stocks meandered between positive and negative territory Thursday as data from the housing and retail sectors provided some encouragement, but anxiety over Friday's jobs report weighed.
Shares of retailers climbed as sales for the key back-to-school buying month of August largely came in better than expected. Nordstrom jumped 6.7%, Limited Brands advanced 4.7% and J.C. Penney added 1.6%. Investors were also heartened by an unexpected increase in pending sales of used homes, a surprising reversal after the index fell two months in a row following the April 30 expiration of a tax credit for buyers. Still, Thursday's round of data had its disappointments. U.S. factory orders rose less than expected in July, while the level of U.S. workers filing new jobless claims last week suggested lingering troubles in the job market and second-quarter productivity fell more than previously thought. In addition, investors haven't yet seen the report they've had the most jitters about--the government's monthly employment data. Unemployment currently stands at 9.5%, and that figure Friday is expected to creep up to 9.6%, with U.S. employers dropping another 110,000 people off the payrolls. Volume was weak, with 2.3 billion shares having changed hands in New York Stock Exchange Composite trading recently. The 2010 daily average is 5.01 billion shares, although the average was lower in August, just over 4 billion shares. The euro edged up to $1.2810, from $1.2803 late Wednesday, after the European Central Bank kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at a record low 1%, as expected. ECB President Jean-Claude Trichet said the ECB would extend its tool box of additional bank funding on a "full allotment" basis, citing continued uncertainties in the economy. The U.S. Dollar Index, reflecting the U.S. currency against a basket of six others, slipped 0.1%. Treasurys were mixed, with an increase in the two-year note pushing its yield down to 0.50% while a decline in the 10-year note lifted its yield to 2.64%. Crude-oil futures edged up, as did gold futures.
Among stocks in focus, Burger King Holdings soared 24% as the fast-food retailer confirmed that 3G Capital has signed a deal to buy the company for $24 a share.
Meanwhile, computer maker Dell withdrew from the bidding war for 3Par, surrendering the storage maker to rival Hewlett-Packard after the tech company lifted its offer to $2.1 billion; 3Par, which makes storage products used in cloud computing, accepted H-P's offer, valuing the company at $33 a share. H-P edged up 0.7%, while Dell rose 2% and 3Par climbed 2.4%.

Post No. 631 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 8/17/10 and an update of the Dow 30 component's SEC filings as of 8/17/10.
A read of Friday's issues of Wall St.
Dow:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 10,415.24 up 28.23 or 0.27% from Wednesday's close of 10,387.01. For the year the Dow is up 28.23%. Of the 30 Dow Companies: 23 gained and 7 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was JPMorgan JPM $40.1 +0.98 2.51% 33,390,450 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was McDonald's MCD $74.37 -1.71 2.25% 14,615,117 NYSE.
WSJ pC6 "Adobe jumps higher; JPMorgan up 2.5%" by Donna Yesalavich says stocks climbed Thurs with JPMorgan, Johnson & Johnson & AT&T pacing the broad advance following better than expected data on employment and US trade deficit. JPMorgan is charted under Good news says it rose after weekly jobless claims fell mroe than expected and the US trade deficit posted its biggest drop in 17 months. McDonald's is charted under Bad News as its same store sales disappointed.
WSJ pC1 "6th gain in 7 days for the DJIA" by Jonathan Cheng says stocks rose for the 6th session in 7, gaining modestly in light trading after an unexpectedly sharp fall in new weekly jobless claims and encouraging trade deficit data.
Fin Times p22 "Positive figures on jobless & exports boost US equities" by Hannah Kuchler says US stocks rose after the number of initial claims for jobless benefits dropped and US exports climbed. The S&P fin'ls index rose 1.2% with Bank of America adding 1%.
NYT pB8 "Shares gain some ground on lower jobless claims" by AP says stocks extended their Sept rally after more encouraging news on the job market.
USA Today p4B "Fewer jobless claims give stocks a lift" by AP says athe stock market extended its Sept rally Thurs following more encouraging news on the job market.
As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493, the trailing P/E ratio is 14.05 up from Thursday's 14.01 (year ago it was 15.53) the P/E estimate is 12.50 unchanged from Thursday's 12.50 (year ago it was 14.91) and the current dividend yield is 2.70 down from Thursday's 2.71 (it was 2.94 a year ago). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,375.16 up 1.72 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,373.43. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase of 1.72 for Thursday by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in Thursday's Dow of 28.23. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $45.87 up 0.12 from Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $45.75. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $40.35 (AXP/HPQ) up 0.92 from Wednesday's Dow Jones median price of 39.43. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $82.96 +0.21 0.25% 2,471,688 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $13.5 +0.13 0.97% 168,143,589 NYSE.
If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made 372 ($137,615 - $137,243 ).
MarketWatch 9/9/10 Thursday 4:35 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks on Thursday posted a second day of gains, with the Dow industrials just a few points away from posting gains for 2010, as investors cheered a drop in weekly jobless claims and an improvement in the trade deficit. The market pared its gains, however, after a report Deutsche Bank might sell stock to raise billions in cash. "They will likely not be the only bank that will have to raise more money," Peter Boockvar, equity strategist at Miller Tabak, said after Bloomberg reported Deutsche Bank AG (DB 59.97, -0.02, -0.03%) was considering a stock sale to raise as much as $11.4 billion. While the report concerning Germany's largest bank triggered a softening in equities and the euro, Boockvar said the paring of gains "came in context of a market that keeps running up above 1,100 [on the S&P 500] and then stalling out." Tensions in the 'peripheral' euro-zone debt markets have eased after the Irish government acted to solve the Anglo Irish Bank crisis and a T-bill auction was successful. The S&P 500 Index (SPX 1,104, +5.31, +0.48%) ended up 5.31 points, or 0.5%, at 1,104.18. Given the index since early July has ranged from a low of 1,025 to 1,130 on the upside, "this is just technical noise as long as we remain in the middle," said Boockvar. "Now we're a little overbought and the market on low volume is taking a little breather," Boockvar added. Up about 90 points earlier during the session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 10,415, +28.23, +0.27%) finished up 5.31 points, or 0.5%, at 10,415.24, with 23 of its 30 components rising, led by J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. (JPM 40.00, -0.10, -0.25%) , up 2.2%. Financials were lifted in part after Morgan Stanley said banks would have the means to hike dividends and repurchase shares next year, while Rochdale Securities named more than a dozen regional players as possible takeover targets, according to Bloomberg. The blue-chip index's biggest weight was McDonald's Corp. (MCD 74.37, -1.71, -2.25%) , off 2.3% after the fast-food chain reported less of a lift in August sales than expected. See Retail Stocks for more on McDonald's. The Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP 2,236, +7.33, +0.33%) advanced 7.33 points, or 0.3%, to 2,236.20. Adobe Systems Inc. (ADBE 32.88, +0.02, +0.06%) shares rallied 12% after Apple Inc. (AAPL 262.54, -0.53, -0.20%) eased restrictions that had curbed use of Adobe's Flash software. Initial unemployment benefit claims fell by 27,000 to 451,000 last week, according to the Labor Department. The better-than-forecast report brings the weekly figure "back further from the psychologically challenging threshold of 500,000" reached two weeks ago, noted Jim Baird, chief investment strategist at Plante Moran Financial Advisors. "The market is showing signs of a bull flag," said Nick Kalivas, vice president of financial research at MF Global Inc. While the government data boosted investor confidence, MF Global's Kalivas finds even more impressive upward guidance from executive search firm Korn/Ferry International (KFY 15.39, -0.12, -0.75%) , which on Thursday reported a return to profit in its fiscal first quarter along with a forecast of a strong second quarter. Shares of the executive search firm, which counts global staffing firms such as Kelly Services Inc. (KELYA 11.89, -.00, -0.01%) and Manpower Inc. (MAN 47.44, -.00, -0.01%) among its rivals, rose 3.8%.
In another economic report Thursday, the Commerce Department reported the nation's trade deficit narrowed as imports fell and exports climbed to near two-year highs.
Nearly two stocks rose for each that declined on the New York Stock Exchange, where nearly 840 million shares traded. On the New York Mercantile Exchange, crude-oil futures fell to close at $74.25 a barrel, while gold futures lapsed 0.5% to end at $1,250.90 an ounce. Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN 23.45, -0.39, -1.64%) , National Semiconductor Corp. (NSM 12.17, -0.73, -5.66%) and gun manufacturer Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. (SWHC 3.60, -0.36, -9.09%) all report quarterly results after the close.
