The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 10,415.24 up 28.23 or 0.27% from Wednesday's close of 10,387.01. Of the 30 Dow Companies: 23 gained and 7 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was JPMorgan JPM $40.1 +0.98 2.51% 33,390,450 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was McDonald's MCD $74.37 -1.71 2.25% 14,615,117 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Thursday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493, the trailing P/E ratio is 14.01 up from Wednesday's 13.95 (year ago it was 15.40) the P/E estimate is 12.50 unchanged from Wednesday's 12.50 (year ago it was 14.91) and the current dividend yield is 2.71 down from Wednesday's 2.72 (it was 2.96 a year ago). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,375.16 up 1.72 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,373.43. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase of 1.72 for Thursday by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in Thursday's Dow of 28.23. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $45.87 up 0.12 from Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $45.75. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $40.35 (AXP/HPQ) up 0.92 from Wednesday's Dow Jones median price of 39.43. If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made 372 ($137,615 - $137,243 ).

MarketWatch 9/9/10 Thursday 4:35 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks on Thursday posted a second day of gains, with the Dow industrials just a few points away from posting gains for 2010, as investors cheered a drop in weekly jobless claims and an improvement in the trade deficit. The market pared its gains, however, after a report Deutsche Bank might sell stock to raise billions in cash. "They will likely not be the only bank that will have to raise more money," Peter Boockvar, equity strategist at Miller Tabak, said after Bloomberg reported Deutsche Bank AG (DB 59.97, -0.02, -0.03%) was considering a stock sale to raise as much as $11.4 billion.
While the report concerning Germany's largest bank triggered a softening in equities and the euro, Boockvar said the paring of gains "came in context of a market that keeps running up above 1,100 [on the S&P 500] and then stalling out." Tensions in the 'peripheral' euro-zone debt markets have eased after the Irish government acted to solve the Anglo Irish Bank crisis and a T-bill auction was successful.
The S&P 500 Index (SPX 1,104, +5.31, +0.48%) ended up 5.31 points, or 0.5%, at 1,104.18. Given the index since early July has ranged from a low of 1,025 to 1,130 on the upside, "this is just technical noise as long as we remain in the middle," said Boockvar. "Now we're a little overbought and the market on low volume is taking a little breather," Boockvar added. Up about 90 points earlier during the session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 10,415, +28.23, +0.27%) finished up 5.31 points, or 0.5%, at 10,415.24, with 23 of its 30 components rising, led by J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. (JPM 40.00, -0.10, -0.25%) , up 2.2%. Financials were lifted in part after Morgan Stanley said banks would have the means to hike dividends and repurchase shares next year, while Rochdale Securities named more than a dozen regional players as possible takeover targets, according to Bloomberg. The blue-chip index's biggest weight was McDonald's Corp. (MCD 74.37, -1.71, -2.25%) , off 2.3% after the fast-food chain reported less of a lift in August sales than expected. See Retail Stocks for more on McDonald's. The Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP 2,236, +7.33, +0.33%) advanced 7.33 points, or 0.3%, to 2,236.20. Adobe Systems Inc. (ADBE 32.88, +0.02, +0.06%) shares rallied 12% after Apple Inc. (AAPL 262.54, -0.53, -0.20%) eased restrictions that had curbed use of Adobe's Flash software. Initial unemployment benefit claims fell by 27,000 to 451,000 last week, according to the Labor Department. The better-than-forecast report brings the weekly figure "back further from the psychologically challenging threshold of 500,000" reached two weeks ago, noted Jim Baird, chief investment strategist at Plante Moran Financial Advisors. "The market is showing signs of a bull flag," said Nick Kalivas, vice president of financial research at MF Global Inc. While the government data boosted investor confidence, MF Global's Kalivas finds even more impressive upward guidance from executive search firm Korn/Ferry International (KFY 15.39, -0.12, -0.75%) , which on Thursday reported a return to profit in its fiscal first quarter along with a forecast of a strong second quarter. Shares of the executive search firm, which counts global staffing firms such as Kelly Services Inc. (KELYA 11.89, -.00, -0.01%) and Manpower Inc. (MAN 47.44, -.00, -0.01%) among its rivals, rose 3.8%.
In another economic report Thursday, the Commerce Department reported the nation's trade deficit narrowed as imports fell and exports climbed to near two-year highs.
Nearly two stocks rose for each that declined on the New York Stock Exchange, where nearly 840 million shares traded. On the New York Mercantile Exchange, crude-oil futures fell to close at $74.25 a barrel, while gold futures lapsed 0.5% to end at $1,250.90 an ounce. Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN 23.45, -0.39, -1.64%) , National Semiconductor Corp. (NSM 12.17, -0.73, -5.66%) and gun manufacturer Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. (SWHC 3.60, -0.36, -9.09%) all report quarterly results after the close.
